This song in particular left me floored as Linda was all over the stage including jumping up on the table at one point and dancing all the while belting perfectly. I went on to see this musical another 6 or 7 times, but nothing ever matched that stellar cast for me. Made me sad when they removed this song from the show.
My parents saw it back in 1990 but sadly I was only 10 years old and they thought I would be a typical bored kid. My mom told me about “Lucy’s” character and Linda Eder’s voice so She played it for me, and I think my jaw fell to the ground and I forgot to pick it up. I was absolutely in awe! From that day on, I was obsessed with her. I wanted to see every show, own every album, and most of all wanted to meet her. When I finally did, I felt like I was in a movie/tv show where the character meets somebody they idealize and cannot get a full sentence out. I was so star struck. She was so beautiful and kind. It was a moment, I wish I could redo, but am so glad I had it.
I could imagine Shirley Bassey singing this - the amusing, almost spoken sections and the theatrical belting would suit her to a tee, I can just hear it in her voice!
They stupidly cut it out in the Broadway album. Thank God they brought it back and do a great rendition of it in the recent revival with Constantine Maroulis from American Idol fame.
The song really doesn't fit the feel of the show, but my GOD does she sell it. Love that woman. One of the reasons I fell for the show in the first place. She's funny, sexy, playful, sly...quintessential Lucy.
