I really enjoyed this video (as I do many of your videos). Thank you for talking about Ib and especially Guertena....his presence is so palpable in the game despite him never showing up!
So glad you enjoyed! It's really interesting how much background stuff there is in the game that just doesn't really get addressed haha, it makes it very compelling
Haha I thought about redrawing that for the video for a fun little comparison but I ended up not having time There's still so much fan work being created for it even now, it's awesome!
Oh Ib. That brings back memories. Thanks for your unique perspective, I had no idea about some of the things you mentioned (like Garry being more feminine in Japanese). Great stuff. You sounded more tired this time though? I hope you are alright. Best wishes.
Apparently a few people didn't know about this, I'm surprised! Tho as I said it's something that's way harder to pick up on on English, and I must assume most of my audience played the translated version haha I'm all good, had a bit of the flu the week before recording this so I was still a bit knocked out from that but I'm all recovered now lol, I appreciate the concern :)
There's always a lot of stuff like that that gets lost in translation or is just hard to find if you're not actively looking into it, so hopefully this can help people understand his character a little more haha
@@panopticontheatre i mean, im sure 97% of the reason why i never heard anyone talk about this is because when the game came out the web was predominantly transphobic so they purposefully ignored or buried down the information
Oh yeah definitely that too, it's the sort of thing that, even if it's common knowledge, you'd hear ppl saying 'but it's not actually a gender thing, it's a cultural misunderstanding, Japan doesn't have gender nonconforming people!' or smth like that lmao
In regards to the calendar, I'd considered that Guertena might have been Jewish and insisted on using the Hebrew calendar for dating his works, but it's currently only 5784 on the Hebrew calendar, so that doesn't pan out unless the game is still set quite far in the future.
Great video and content! Stumbled upon your channel from the Yume Nikki one. Wow, it's already been 12 years since Ib was released. I remember having played it around that time and it left an inpression on me. You might like another free small horror RPG Maker game called "Ann", which was clearly inspired by Ib.
This video is amazing, I've loved Ib since I was like 5 years old. I've loved rpgmakers and other story heavy games for the same amount of time but nothing hit me quite like Ib did. Maybe .flow and Higurashi come a little close, but Higu's plot is EXTREMELY thick and explained so it doesn't have that mystery surrounding it that Ib does for me. And .flow is a little *too* mysterious so I didn't have enough clues to fully hook myself into it! I've always been interested in the deeper worldbuilding of Ib (though I used to just figure there wasn't any) but I'd never considered anything in this video before. I feel like replaying it now with everything in mind... Anyway, sorry for the fat wall of text but I just get excited about this stuff lol. You seem like you'd be very good at making your own stories with how you can make such cool meanings out of little details
Ib feels like such a unique game in how clear the actual story is but how vague and interesting the worldbuilding is once you look past that first layer, it's intrigued me for years lol so I'm glad this video could open some of that up for you! And it's always worth a replay anyway if it's been a while lol, it holds up super well and the new version adds some interesting dialogue if you haven't played it yet! And no worries lol, I always get happy when people are as excited about these things as I am haha. I do write a lot myself, I'm in the editing stages of writing a novel and I'm a long time ttrpg DM so I'm glad you have that impression lol that's a good sign for me 😅

0:10 Omg your art?? That’s so cool this game is so creatively inspiring there was so much art about it!
Haha I thought about redrawing that for the video for a fun little comparison but I ended up not having time

Here I thought the 6000 number was just the order it was painted in, I had not considered the Juggler being serious about it being a year
Haha it's a little less obvious in the English version but they're definitely dates!
I didn't know much about this game, but I know it was an RPG Maker classic, and seems to have some pretty interesting lore. Love the art too.
It's a very fun little game, some of the puzzles are pretty creative haha and I love the story and characters. Definitely a classic ofc
best rpgmaker horror imo
Real

Just stumbled upon your channel and this is some really well-put together stuff!!!! Didn't take much for me to get subscribed.
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoy 👌
Oooh ib essay yeaaah! And woaah i never knew about the Garry thing, cool!!!

Yeah, I looked at a couple more common calendars to see if there was any match up, but didn't see any that did. It's a good idea tho!
It's probably an alternate universe or some country that uses a made-up calendar.
Or like you said, another world.

Such an iconic game!
This game is 🖼️/10
Absolutelyyy
Remake? WHAT REMAKE???
Well, I played Ib once in 2015 and want to do it once more, but few years have passed...
The puzzles are a little different and there's more dialogue, so it's definitely worth checking out!
