Love your RUclips channel and I appreciate you put out quality content always! I really liked learning about the rich background of Château Haut-Brion. Keep on sharing an in-depth knowledge of prestigious wines as you have been doing so far, John! Cheers!
John, I appreciate this informative video on Haut-Brion. I feel like I was in wine class, and learned a lot about this acclaimed Château. I had no idea it was located in Graves unlike the other First Growth(s). I jotted down all the vintages for my records but it seems like, you can’t go wrong with any one of them, including the 1994. Thank you for this stellar overview. I will try to locate the second wine, and hopefully I can find it. SORRY FOR BEING LATE! I had no Internet all day! I appreciate the preview of the video this morning , John!! Cheers!!
Grazie mille Gina! Such a phenomenal producer! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Sounds like you had a fantastic day at the beach! Hope you enjoyed your Easter Sunday!
A 2003 Chateau Haut-Brion I had at the Inn at Little Washington many years ago was the first really good wine I ever tasted. And it's still the best wine I've ever tasted, including all the other First Growths.
6:52 buying strategies if the investors wana opt to skip to his opinion on buying but would recommend watching the whole video and all 3 of the other videos in this 4 part series very informational professional and great history/this guy is just a great story teller historian and overall fabulous narrator that makes it easy to understand for all
Thanks! I have two videos with wine collecting strategies that discuss some topics important for investing. I also have videos focused on collectible wines that are all good for investment. Examples are below. I also prepare videos focused on top vintages in specific region and discuss buying strategies there, such as 2022 Bordeaux and 2019 Brunello. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/k4LJ9vcK43g/видео.htmlsi=YEWckN5hpdcbGilp ruclips.net/video/76kEwJG_xWU/видео.htmlsi=nYqs1MCkEwePSr9n
Excellent video as usual. Please do videos for the other First Growths. Also, it would be very helpful for tips when it comes to buying older vintages. I frequently hear the advice "make sure there is good provenance and there has been good storage", however it's unclear exactly how to do that. WineSearcher gives prices, not provenance or storage history. A few retail sites do, but the vast majority don't. Thanks and keep up the great work!!!
Thanks very much! I’ll try to work in some tips regarding the secondary market but the best way is to buy wines that are ex-chateau or coming straight from the winery to the retailer. There are also places that buy collections and re-sell them that vet them thoroughly before purchasing. Benchmark has been pretty reliable in that regard. Cheers!
I was looking for a bottle from my birth year, unfortunately is 1994... but I found an interesting deal for a bottle of Chateau Haut-Brion, based on your tasting of the same vintage, is it worth a shot?
Thanks! I enjoyed the 94 HB about 6-7 years ago. That was my most recent experience with it. Based on some other 94 Bordeaux I have had more recently, I think this one is likely fading a bit now. If you enjoy older wine and it has good provenance you might give it a try. Large format would help a lot too.
@@alessiofontana6835 My pleasure! I'm not sure where you are located, but if you can track down Napa Cabernet with some age, 1994 was epic there. Wines like Dominus and Dunn are still showing extremely well. Even Caymus SS, which was made very differently back then.
Thanks very much! I'll add these to my list and see if I can work them in. In the meantime, I did an IG Live where I interviewed someone from Vega Sicilia and did a tasting of some of the wines that may be of interest. She had a bit of a problem with her audio, but provided lots of excellent insights. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/Iu8W7oiC3mw/видео.html
@@jakrarajrungsaeng3135 I would go with the HB. It has 2 100 point scores and is being compared to the 89. The mouton is excellent too, but this is a special HB.
Back watching yr vid as I drink HB 19 and Eisele Vinyards CS 15. HB clearly the wine with much more depth than the Napa "First Growth". Somehow I am reminded of St. Estephe or Pontet Canet as I taste HB. Do u see the connection? Has a very stoney and woody flavor that also brings my memory back to Montrose/Cos and certain Pauillacs like P-C. HB feels more elegant while being brooding like the aforementioned wines. Feels like these 3 regions share more in common, whereas St. Julien and Margaux each both have their distinct respective profiles. Thoughts?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I have always considered HB to be somewhat unique among at least the first growths. Totally agree re the stoney/mineral character. Latour has minerality too, but HB has much more Merlot than Latour. St. estephe has some similarity, but for me the structure there distinguishes it. HB would definitely be a tough comparison for Eisele. I’m a big PC fan too, but may need to try that and HB side to side! Cheers!
@@AttorneySomm yea i feel the key difference is the structure of st. estephe and perhaps more minty freshness from cab sav, compared to HB. what i mean was in terms of aroma and flavor, i find many similarities between the two subregions, moreso than the others. ive had more recent vintages (HB 98, 05, 19) and, similar to wines from the region, exhibit typical graves character of dried earth, warm bricks/clay, potting soil... not too dissimilar to montrose or cos d'estournel with the st. estephe dry and cardboard/antique wood notes. unfortunately similar to a montrose/cos/pontet canet, I admire HB much more than I actually enjoy drinking. the more i drink the pickier i get, perhaps. Personally, I am a huge fan of the exotic spicy character of st. julien, the laser-like precision and floral notes in a Las Cases or Ducru speak to me directly, something I cant find elsewhere except a Figeac or Cheval Blanc from st. emilion.
What do you think of the 2014 Haut Brion? It seems pretty highly rated compared to many of the off-vintages, but costs substantially less than the classic vintages of 05, 10 etc.
How would you compare Haut-Brion with Carmes Haut-Brion? I know it is a different winery. Are there similarities? I ask because I know CHB very well but HB not. Great videos you make 👍
Thank you! I haven’t tried as much CHB. I know the property is close by. CHB definitely has more Cab Franc though, so it can be more aromatic and lighter. But recently they are getting a bit more robust.
Merlot is nearly the same (42,8 - 41%). Cabernet Sauvignon is HB much higher, as you said (39,7 - 20%). And Cabernet Franc is lower (17,5 - 39%). 2020 wines. I think the CHB is more soft and silky
@@matthiasschairer6456 Thanks. Didn’t check the 20. Was writing off the top from my recollection of vineyard planting percentages and history. Definitely need to try it again. So many excellent wines, so little time! Appreciate the update!
I definitely like Haut Brion better than Chateau Lafite. Both are great, but Haut Brion just seems more complex to me and just hits all the right buttons.
Thank you! Haut Brion is definitely the one I typically prefer as well, although there are certain vintages of Lafite that I prefer. HB does have a unique character, though.
