I've also heard that many BPO companies have started removing their foreign employees and laying off some of their local employees because Clients (like google) are starting to replace humans with AI. I am scared for my Filipino people. Many are actually praising Pinoys being the best call center agents, I don't really know about that but I worked in a BPO company and most of us are not good in providing solution to customers, most need to be spoon fed cus it's kind of difficult to train them and most find it hard to learn the tools on their own. With the capabilities of AI nowadays, I can tell that Ai is much smarter in these tasks that call center agents do than call center agents themselves.

The problem is that large corporations are inhuman and prefer profits over consequences. On that note, the majority of BPO companies that operate out of the Philippines are there because large corporations found it a lot cheaper to close down local call centres/support centres in their own countries and outsourced them to the Philippines, where lower wages, lower conditions, 8 hour work days etc meant larger profits and less responsibilities for those corporations. Those corporations will naturally screw over Filipinos because they have already screwed over their own local former employers. It is of course not enough to make billions in profits when you can make more billions in profits and share those profits with less. Not for nothing did google get rid of one of it's motto's ' dont be evil' when it morphed into the monolithic monopoly of alphabet in 2015.
The only way to combat profit over humanity greedy companies is to be a consumer with knowledge and a conscience. Research the products you buy and the services you use and avoid those companies that profit out of abusing people ie: apple might make good if somewhat overpriced products but the reason they literally have more than a trillion dollars in cash reserves is because they outsource the manufacture of their products to China where the workers do 14 hour days 6 days a week and earn a pittance of what their American counterparts would earn given the opportunity.

After spending the better part of a year there, I came to realize that all of the software systems that exists were highly dysfunctional, as were the human systems that supported them. And no, the US does not have a safety net for these people, so they face the same situation as the people in the Philippines. Unfortunately, countries that still manufacture things will be the winners as everything else can be done by AI. However, well developed countries have other options compared to the Philippines, thus it will be harder for them compared to the west. The problem is that most want to go the easy route, and that is not manufacture or build something.

The Philippines needs to act now or they will be left behind. AI technology is moving way faster than any tech I have ever seen in over 50 years. Philippines needs to start now in training and adapting. I know that's going to be extremely hard for the majority as the culture is not conducive to tech startups in the Philippines. What I see happening is outside companies coming in and taking over because the Philippines just can't adapt fast enough due to cultural conditions. I already see outside companies coming in, but what happens if one guy married a Filipina, then he starts a business but in her name. But she has no clue how to run a business and doesn't understand the concepts. Therefore the AFAM husband and his company are really operating the business. And yes, the education system has to adapt and change to teach students how to do all this for themselves. If the Government doesn't mandate and fund the education needed then it will be left behind as the country is taken over by foreign investments.

Luckily for me I have some savings and a pension so I think I’ll be alright but I fear for the younger Filipinos that I know unfortunately I think the government (like any other government) is going to be slow to respond if for no other reason then then the problem is rather huge and governments move slowly at best. As usual it’s up to the individual to get the knowledge needed. I don’t think that is that hard but it’s going to have to be a personal thing and formal training/education will come but it will be awhile. But I think that Filipinos are up to the challenge, a lot more then the youth of other western countries. The other problem is that wages are so low in the Philippines that there will be a huge brain drain to other countries in the world.

Very big props for making this. At its core AI is just a huge averaging function, so it is best suited to common things. You are right to want to hurry up the value chain and tackle harder problems. Again this is wonderful to be concerned and be early to adapt. Also, I give you huge credit to seeing that while social media use has some obvious good, there is alot of hidden downsides. Now onto the most frustrating part -- you are right to be worried and the majority of the folks you share your concern with won't care until fixing is painful to impossible. The only thing to do is like the plane oxegen masks in the event of emergancy -- fix your mask first before helping others (you have to be good to be of any use)

The short sided vision of business it going to latch on to it and no job will be safe except for 'hands on" type jobs. The long game is still unknown since this is not like all the disruptive technologies of yesterday. Think of all the businesses made to support horses before cars in essence those people went from being a horse shoe to auto mechanic. There is nothing that AI is bringing as it is self supporting, it literally creates it own code once created.

After traveling to the Philippines many times, the best advice I can give is to control the birth rate. There are many children born to unwed mothers. The men who got these women pregnant, and the government, are not interested in the welfare of these women with babies who end up in a life of struggling. It's cruel to say that but it's true.

The main issue PH and all Asia countries have going forward is the culture of face saving. Never wanting to risk being wrong or not knowing an answer. If a mistake is made they never want to admit it. Can't learn and improve with this thinking.
Creativity is crushed because it might be seen negatively by others. Perfect for factory line workers doing the same task over ad over. But not good for creating new businesses. Japan has struggled with this for decades. They're improving, but very slowly.
China has had some success but as soon as a company becomes powerful the gov destroys, threatens the people running the company. Keeping power in many countries is much more important than development and improving the lifestyle of the population. Cuba is a good example.

Good point. A lot of BPO jobs will definitely go, unless the staff are retrained in new value-added tasks. The LLMs need to be trained and tested and that generate new jobs, but it's a menial task when you just have to click and confirm the image is, yes, a dog. You don't want to compete at that level. PH could be attractive if it turns itself into an AI development hub, combined with its cost-efficient wage level. But, every other country is also currently trying to do that, and there are plenty of people in the west who are extending their skillsets before their role is replaced by AI. The next 5 years will determine who wins long term.

AI is a Power intensive activity. PH still has Brown outs in many of it's major cities. I don't see this as a good path. PH needs investment capital, that can only come from outside the country. Until the governments and peoples view changes there, nothing will change.

I suspect that it could take some time. However, things will eventually need to change in order for the Philippines to evolve; things may need to get worse before they can become better. This wake-up call could serve to push policy-makers to support these necessary changes. Marcos has made many promises but I have yet to see much action from him that is not self-serving in some way. To be fair, I am observing from afar (and as a foreigner).

Right now the AI bots are useless as call center agents.
However, that hasn't stopped companies from replacing call centre humans with AI.
We waste around 3-5 minutes before one can get to a human who can answer the queries.
Companies have downgraded their services, simply because all are doing it before anything good has come.
Self checkout is annoying but all supermarkets are doing it, so there is no choice for shoppers.
Filipinos are already overqualified for the jobs they do.
Teachers working as nannies abroad, graduates working in retail and restaurants, hotel management in housekeeping etc.
Education as a solution is an obsolete idea.
AI will destroy jobs and careers, and it is already happening.

  • @waterbug1135
    @waterbug1135 3 часа назад

The concept that PH "put all it's eggs in one basket" with BPO is the right analogy. It implies PH had the option to create many industries. BPO was perfect for PH so that's what happened.
The AI door swings both ways. Yes it will eliminate repetitive jobs like call centers, but AI also creates jobs to train AI. Not as many jobs however. Someone has to sit at a computer, be shown a image so a human can spot a cat or whatever in the image and click on it so the AI can learn. What we call AI today is not intelligent. Originally, decades ago, AI meant actual thinking similar to how humans think. Human brains really are just pattern matching machines. We call that thinking.
The AI today is pattern matching but not the level we'd call thinking. It has no idea what a cat is but if 1000 humans each point to a cat in 500,000 images each the AI learns to parrot whatever the humans did.
So that's a lot of hours of work to get a useful AI. This has to be done for every area. One AI for how to use an Apple laptop and a different AI for an Acer laptop. DeepSeek AI has apparently figured out a faster way to train AI, so maybe training jobs go away.

You are correct, AI is hitting hard. At the end of 2024, Google said AI is already doing 30% of all coding, I think other companies are following suit. AI has shown it can see cancers with greater accuracy on images than experienced radiologists. About 10 yrs ago maybe RUclipsr CPG Grey put out video "Humans Need Not Apply", I was surprised it has taken this long, but its only going to accelerate from here. American jobs have been sen overseas for decades because it was cheaper. But, AI is always going to be cheaper than humans. Its going to be disruptive worldwide. One of the best things to try to do is start using AI, get familiar with it, you may be the only human managing robots in a large company store, etc. It doesn't have to be all bad though, it depends how Governments, companies, societies handle it. It could be the AI "work" is taxed and everyone gets a Universal Basic Income (UBI) and people are allowed to pursue interests not because that is how they will make a living, but for personal enrichment.

They have a problem looking beyond 'first level" internet query garbage and struggled to even compile a simple list. Numbers and dates seem to be a particular problem. When I corrected them, they apologized and "corrected the answer often getting it wrong again. I did the same several times over a week and it never got better, so much for learning by mistakes. I don't know but this might be just the free versions. Having said all this, I wouldn't buy any big-ticket items if I were employed in a call center because I doubt if it will take long for AI to catch up... maybe 1-3 years? "Does you wants fries wit dat?" workers in the U.S. are being replaced with self serv order entry kiosks. What to do? If your job is simple and or you have hundreds or even thousands of fellow workers doing the same thing your job is on the line. Find anything that cannot currently be done by AI or robots.

yes but now to find the 'currently cannot be done by AI or robots' jobs you'll have millions of newly laid off people all competing for the same limited amount of jobs. and that low amount/high demand gap is only going to get worse and worse as the more jobs are taken by AI & automation.
now i will agree this is not a current problem but it will within 50'ish years be a worldwide massive problem. i think it could even get to a breaking point where most of the worlds gov could be overthrown by the masses revolting because of course all gov will side with their billion dollar business buddies. so the people will see both big business and gov as the cause/problem.

"Receptionists were replaced by voicemail" - Not quite, receptionists still exist and tend to be located in fronts of most offices in the reception area. voicemail replaced answering machines.
"Clerk typists were replaced by word processors" - the type writer was replaced by the word processor which was replaced by the PC - the roe of typists/word processors was simply phased out because everyone has their own PC and can type & print their own documents.
Welders in almost all car manufacturing were replaced with robotics is correct but the manufacturing process of cars itself changed..cars are no longer made to last or be repairable, the manufacturing is cheaper, a lot more are manufactured and while the quality has apparently increased the life span is less that it was 30 years ago because cars are no longer repaired by panel beaters, just written off when they have small bingles.
Capitalism relies upon people being able to buy consumer gods and pay for items such as accommodation, healthcare etc - to achieve this people require employment that pays them enough to consume and spend money that companies can use to manufacture goods and make profits. When AI replaces people in employment that are no longer able to find jobs or work and thus no longer able to spend then it threatens the existence of those companies that use AI to increase their profits. google might use AI to create videos, target their audience etc but google also relies upon advertising from companies that need people to consume their goods.

Good comments. I'm not going to get into the weeds and interpretation of job duties. They all vary by employer. On former employees flooding a job market. That is a real problem and it boils down to each individual and what they will do and for how much. I am retired and I was a factory owner. In over 20 years of ownership I never had a lay-off: including during the pandemic. For that I got over 20 years of dealing with employee drama. That was one of the main reasons I sold the factory and retired.

@@geoffrichardson929 So..i called my internet provider 2 weeks ago to change my location and thus service from an old address to a new address, which entailed a completely new internet service plan. I of course spoke to a customer service centre based in the Philippines. I am wondering what stupid questions you think i may have asked and what role the customer service agent had, was it to ' weed out stupid questions' or was it to retain my custom and try to upsell products?
My version of a call centre isn't that it is expensive, it is the version that existed prior to call centres being outsources to India & the Philippines - you will find that the companies that used to have call centres in their countries of origin also made large profits - the reason they outsource is because they can A, make larger profits, B, subcontract thus have no responsibility for the welfare or rights of the agents selling their products and C, so they can have larger profits.
I choose and chose my utilities company because their customer service centre is in my country where I have the utilities, they are familiar with issues that occur because they too live here, they get paid here, they pay taxes here and you may be surprised to know their employer still makes huge profits.
I have no issue with call centres in the Philippines, their English is far better than indian call centres..but, they exist because they are cheaper and far more exploitable than local call centres. Where i live we have 8 hour days, 40 hour weeks and mandated breaks, leave, sick pay etc- the Philippines tend to work 12 hour days 6 days a week and no mandated breaks or sick leave. The corporations and CEO's make much larger profits because they exploit those less able to stand up for themselves and most consumers don't give a toss. If you can find an example of a company that has lowered its prices as a direct result of outsourcing then feel free to let me know - local call centres may be expensive but not one company has reduced it's costs as a result of outsourcing, they've simply increased their profits.

Put that knowledge base in an AI that receives your concern as a customer, et voila. humans make errors, most pinoys who are even 5 yrs already working in the company still have hard time getting the right solution from their tool. Rubeauti, (I'm not being sarcastic or a 'HATER') where do you think Government's get their money from, most socialist do not understand this, they act as if money grows on trees!
Government revenue comes from the working population also tariffs, import duties, sale tax and Value added tax or as I like to call it 'SWEAT TAX' (V.A.T or G.S.T {goods and services tax} same thing)! So as A.I. takes over so many repetitious work, the Governments raises minimum wages as the number of jobs decrease! In Canada the minimum wage is now $17.30 an hour...sounds good but companies have to raise the price of their products, whatever they are, to meet this expense (back in the late 1970's, early 1980's the then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau tried price and wadge freeze...FAILED), even though the work force is being reduce. Canada's dollar 'is' dropping like a rock thanks to the inept polices of Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Government, so it ridiculously expensive to live in Canada.
Remember every one cannot learn to code (programing), that was one of the many stupid suggestions of Joe (Manchurian Candidate) Biden in 2020, 'Unemployed people can learn to 'CODE' after he shut down the oil industry! You need the job diversity of employment so people can find their niche of bounce around when they get board of a job (bouncer 'not in a bar'). Rubeauti didn't you get your Hack (Taxi Driver) licenses....how is it going??
So, you are left with surplus of people who cannot find simple easy jobs. Social Welfare systems who have to borrow money on the open market to pay those people paying out 'BILLIONS' in interest......they (governments) could always try to solve the problem.... 'Soylent Green!!'
