Following a decade or so of development, we finally have Skull and Bones in hand. Yes, it's a real game, and no, it's not a trainwreck. However, it's impossible to ignore that compared to games like Assassin's Creed Rogue and Black Flag, Skull and Bones is lapped by its own predecessors. Even when ignoring the past, lining it up against its competition in Sea Of Thieves means it'll be rough waters for Skull and Bones for sometime before anything comes of it.

The reason this game exists is because the government of Singapore had a 10 year contract with Ubisoft to develop a game using Singaporean workers in order to create jobs. Ubisoft spent most of this time sending their execs on vacations to Singapore until the contract was ending where they then pushed this game out.

@@DHID2682If a completely new branch of a company locates to a whole new country it is pretty common to have the home office deeply involved for years. Leads and management are supposed to institute developed practices and a mature culture from established branches of a company. Once a product ships or a project reaches completion the goal is to integrate whatever worked that is different on the local level and begin to hand off key roles to native talent. What happened with Skull and Bones is misalignment in incentives and mismanagement both by the home office and the new studio.

All they had to do was get rid of the Assassins Creed-y bits, and let us commandeer or buy, and customize different kinds of ships.
What they did was copy the combat mechanics but make it worse, then gut cool features that existed in the source material and would make sense for a pirate game.
Climbing around on the rigging of my ship and others was always so impressive to me as a kid. Being able to stop anywhere you want and just dive off the side of the ship was such an immersive feature.

What hurts more this day and age is that heavy-weight titles take too long to develop. Not only is the wait painful, but it also means each individual game project has higher risks, thus must justify itself with higher potential revenue on a business perspective. This causes bigger companies to lean more and more towards the "cautious side", which in the business world is to "copy what other people did so there is less risk of failure than trying something new".
Also the longer the projects, the further ahead in time you have to project those sales/revenue number, the harder it is to estimate correctly. This trend of longer development is just going to cause more games to miss the mark, lost their way, or get morphed mid-way to fit a different model, which leads to higher chances of failure.

The thing about Skull & Bones is that it feels like you are the ship.
You control the ship and all aspects.
But none of the mechanics are fleshed out.
The impact of cannon fire just isn't there either.
Sailing is super fast and the arcade feeling of the movement controls never goes away.
It feels like you are always in control of where you go; which for ships back then; wasn't always the case.
The open sea is in control.
In AC Black Flag it felt like you were the captain of the ship.
And while at the helm, you did in fact controlled the ship; the cannons, etc.
But you could also let the helm go and roam the ship, board other ships, swim, dive, go on land and explore, fight with pirate themed weapons...
Skull & Bones was inspired by ACBF and thus needed to do the same thing but bigger, better...
It failed at that task spectacularly.
It removed half of what made the naval aspect of ACBF fantastic and what they kept wasn't upgraded but downgraded.
I've said it before, I'll say it again:
All they had to do was make AC Black Flag, remove the assassins vs templars story plot and the abstergo bullshit and flesh out the naval systems.

Am I bummed about the lack of sword play and actual boarding? Yes. I would say that actual boarding should happen once you get to the east. The first part would be a bit dumb due to the size of the ships. Bonus: Unlike Sea of Thieves, I don't have to worry about randos sinking me when I'm trying to get my groove. This is not being contrarian to be contrarian. Simply stating my opinion. Am i pissed that I paid full price? Yup. This would be a good game to grab when it is 30-50% off, and you want something to play to turn off your brain for a while like I mentioned before. Way too much hype for a decent game.

What you are seeing Mr. Matty is the computer game equivalent of one of those long projects you see with shop classes and the such. You know, like when a school assembles a house or car over a few years? What probably happened is when Epic was contracted to a project using only Singapore labor then ended up having to train all of their personnel from scratch. Goodness knows that this was probably their first time gaining full-time access to a computer, including classes. Then as personnel got trained they would move to other companies, departments, ect. resulting in more training and as the government itself eager for more programmers in its own infrastructure...and so on. With that kind of environment and turnover this is how far you get.

Ac Rouge, while not really a good ac game, in my opinion, had much better ship missions because the map was smaller for them than Black flag. To me, it made them more unique and less grinding than the others where it was first introduced.
But geeze, every new ac game has ship combat so yea I have the same question - who's this for? Oh well, it wasn't for me anyway. Thanks for the input, Matty.

The game is a lot of fun if you want to be a pirate and manage a ship or a pirate party with friends. Sea of Thieves is the only pirate game alternative, but the gameplay is very different and the cartoony graphics provide a very different feel. People seem to be criticising that “this isn’t Black Flag 2!”, but that’s just silly, it was never meant to be. It’s like criticising Elden Ring for not having ship battles. Duh.

I think we shouldn't be comparing apples to oranges. Sea of Thieves and Skull and Bones are two very different games. If you were wanting a PVP pirate game, this isn't it. Sea of Thieves is your Fortnite. Skull and bones is a pirate Sim that opens up more and more the more you progress. It's not for everyone, so the comparison doesn't work. Hating on it because you want another Sea of Thieves doesn't make sense. You don't like it, fine. Some people do.

I got the amazon special edition and admittedly I didn't pay full price (as I has a £50 discount from work) but I like it. Yes it's inferior to Black Flag in a lot of ways; harpoon hunting, underwater treasure diving, and big boss ship battles feel. I like how you harvest and loot quickly - I would be going nuts if every time I had to harvest resources in a mini game that involved leaving the ship as often as you do. I also agree that ship maneuvering is not great and generic. But this can be remedied with a change to the mechanics say a sloop that is quick and nimble compared to a galleon which is turns like a cow but packs more of punch. I would find that interesting because you can choose a ship for a mission. I think there's a lot potential if Ubisoft are committed to make some changes. Alos the microtransactions are for cosmetics only and can be ignored, I don't see an issue here as yet. It's not like AC where there are in game buffs that come with a charge.

Yes, micro-transactions are a blight but unlike FIFA, for example, where the game is engineered to get people to spend on Ultimate Team, the microtransactions here are purely cosmetic consumables unlike the Assassins Creed. Nothing is perfect and given there's been precious little in the genre other than Sea of Thieves (which I didn't that much) that I'm content.

@@danbauer3669 I agree with some of your points around modern games, yes hits are few and far between, but I don't agree they are trash. I don't like the capitalistic machinations but they are easily ignored.
I don't agree on not caring about quality and entertainment experience - if anything I think they are too ambitious and that is their ultimate downfall.
The Horizon games for example highlight this for me, Zero Dawn (amazing), Forbidden West (Good). Similarly, Assassins Creed Origins (Great), Valhalla (Good). My biggest gripes with both was the ambitious scale of their respective worlds felt like filler and used the space to level up characters and treasure hunt without much diversity in mission type. But overall, the core stories were decent - marred by anti-climactic endings, the main and minor characters were solid, and did offer enjoyment before becoming a slog.
But I can agree that both lacked quality. The attention to detail and world design and detail was immense. It's not like say Bethesda games where the worlds are very obviously cut and paste rinse and repeat, as an example. But yes there are games that take the piss with reskins being passed off as new games.

Maybe they care about the quality of new IP's, but tried and tested IP's? Not a chance.
Here's another dogsh!t Batman game. The publisher has zero chance of losing the license and to the consumer "you want a Batman game? Well, this is the only one in town. Love it or leave it."

I was hoping for group raids on islands or some kind of "one piece" type ungodly treasure that everyone could hunt for. Basically, just rip off One Piece and Pirates of the Caribbean and mainly feature the boat battles of AC4. The hunting for hidden and magical islands I could explore with my crew is what I wanted and not having that is a hard pass for me. Also, where is the law? Are there cops (or similar) anywhere in the game? Corrupt government officials, sunken ships full of gold, diving suits, volcano events, tsunamis.... I wanted so much more.

This gameplay gives me a few ideas to speculate what had possibly happened during the game's development, at least that's the first impressions this gameplay gives me.
Since the game is to be separated from AC entirely, the development team struggled to define unique features to put into this game (that doesn't overlap with Assassin's Creed). All the "mythical stuff" belongs to AC, all the "land content and discovery" also belongs to AC. So this project has a hard time making itself unique.
Soon after the development started, live service games became popular, so the company decide to use this new project as an attempt for their own live service game. This is probably not envisioned by the team from the beginning, thus putting more variables and confusion onto what this game is supposed to be.
Because of so many uncertainties, the game's development stayed in putting together "very generic" systems and components for a very long time. Anything that's supposed to be the game's unique elements (like combat) feels empty and incomplete because there was no final decision made on what it should be, and time ran out eventually.
