- Here is my review of the Dragon 1/350 Battleship Scharnhorst. This was one of my "bucket list" kits I was lucky enough to get for Christmas. I plan to have it as a long term build to work on throughout the year.
I am admittedly a novice when it comes to ship modeling, so if I get any terms wrong I apologize. I'm excited to get in to this subject, but it's a daunting and expansive one.
Scharnhorst is a ship I have a great interest in as it's story is more robust than most Kriegsmarine surface ships. She saw lots of action, and went down in a haunting scene that is almost too eerie to be true yet it is. Scharnhorst was known as a Pocket Battleship but some refer to her as a heavy cruiser, I just used the title Dragon gave her. The Germans called her both.
If you'd like to learn more about the ship, I can recommend this two part documentary. It's long but quite complete.

As to the kit, it seems great, with all of the typical Dragon quality. I simply don't have the experience or knowledge to tell you how it compares to other manufacturers or Dragon's other 1/350 ships.

A complicated build like that with the joy of Dragon instructions, gonna be real fun :)
+Svenne009 It'll either be fun or turn me off of modeling.
"I am going to start with this insanely complicated one". Lol... nice. :)
+KitMaker Network Go big or go home.
As a 1/350 shipbuilder, the biggest piece of advice i can give you is -- be patient!
For using a wood deck, generally they go on pretty early, because you can't build too much on top without getting in the way of the deck. You also should paint the parts underneath in case the coverage of the deck isn't complete and something shows through. On the bright side, the wood deck can cover up ugly seams and save you some filling and sanding.
I had a odd dream where I was in charge of refitting this ship with better anti aircraft guns. I replaced the single 20mm mounts with dual and ways ones, and replaced the 37mms with 40mms. I have been thinking about recreating a model of my dream one day.
+Gunsight416 that's a bizarre dream.
good lord this is about twice as complex as the kit i got! you can go crazy there and build build build :)
+Hamilkar Barkas Or fail fail fail. I shall do my best though.
I hope you are going to show the build. It will be very interesting. I have a couple of ships that I want to build and I am new to ships also. So watching you will definitely help me. That is a nice kit. It should be fantastic when you finish it. Thanks for the video
+dalton vickers Thanks Dalton, as long as I don't make a mess of it.
I see you are expanding your horizon, Adam. This is a good thing. This will be fun to watch.
+Russell Gosselin I really am Mr. Gosselin. Little bit scared if I'm honest. You can consider this my late to the party Out of my comfort zone entry.
Adam Mann Awesome. Getting outside one's comfort zone is good. Just don't get lost in the twilight Zone :)
Thanks for making this review, Adam! The kit looks promising. Keep us updated with the building process.
+localjedi I'll post updates for sure, just probably not confident enough to timelapse the build.
Adam, That is a very nice kit you have there. It will be a lot of work and the P.E. will really test you, but it will be worth it. A little advice when building ships, work up and out. You don't want to be reach through parts you already attached to the deck, you will break them off, I known. I am looking forward to the final review in a year or two, Ha!
+Mark Thacker Thanks for the advice, I'd never heard that. It's an exciting but super intimidating kit.
Thanks for showing this. I've had my eye on it since pre-order announcement. I know that you have the patience and skill to do this kit. Can't wait for the final reveal in 2017 !!! :)
+Errowl31 2018 maybe.
The thing i love about the scharnhorst is how sleek she is, paired with that Atlantic Bow
Adam. nice review and "all ship shape". Some times it's great to get out of your comfort zone.
+TANK MODELLER Paul Inge way way out of my comfort zone. thanks.
You are definitely taking a big bite ,just hope you can chew it !!! I have a suggestion, I would recommend you try a 1/350 sub kit or two just to get used to working in the scale. I have several in my stash from Hobby Boss and Trumpter. They all come with p/e sheets. These will give you a chance to learn how to add the railings and bend them to fit. Also, AA guns with p/e parts. They are not expensive and can often be found on sale, too. Good luck on your big ship. I'm sure there are builds here on RUclips which should be of help as well.
+Ennis Anderson You're not the first person to suggest that, so I think I probably will. Thanks for the tip.
Everyone's always wanting more and more detail so here you are guys! Dive in!
Ten years ago I started a 1/200th Bismarck. Hull is complete with motors and RC. The superstructure is still under construction, thousands of PE parts to place.
10 years , wow it kinda sounds like something I would do.
I couldn't let something like that go that long. I ENVY YOU!
You can order pe sprues from Dragon maby? Trumpeter charges very little per PE sprue for example like 1 euro or something and shipping is about 7-8 euro so you could get whole PE set with shipping for around 15.
great review, and I'm sure that you will make a super build of it.
+neil harrison Thanks, I sure hope so.
Good luck with this one Adam, Just treat each subject as a little mini build in it's own right, and you will be fine, forget the big picture for now. I will be watching out for your updates.
+Old Timer Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking.
You think this is small you should check out photo etch for a 1/700 scale battleship ;-). Very nice review and it makes me anxious to dig into my 1/350 ships. :-)
+Jason Smith Thanks, I looked at 1/700 and it was too small. I have this and a 1/72 U-boat, and that's about all the non-1/35 I can handle.
Wow thats super detailed. I'm hoping to start on my 1/200 scale Bismarck soon and the instructions from Trumpeter look nothing like those.
+souljah11b Would you say Trumpeters instructions are easier? 1/200 is huge.
Great review of that wonderful kit. Being a ship novice too I've been quite curious about how difficult this build is.. Now I know the answer! And something tells me that if you survive all the PE work, an even greater monster will be awaiting you.. The rigging!! All jokes aside, I found the book 'Ship building from kits' by David Grifftith very helpful for a ship noob like me (though the book does't make ship models look lees intimidating)
+Bas de Rue Thanks for the tip, I'm pretty intimidated by it, but it will be amazing if I can pull it off.
WTF!!!!! Gonna be fun, Adam, watching you ‘meltdown’ and pull some REALLY strange, puzzled faces over where the Zimmerit needs to be applied, and how the hell to attach the loader’s hatch support bracket!!! Variety is the spice of life.... so they say, but this has just GOTTA be really pushing the boundaries of your ‘comfort zone’, hasn’t it? But as you say, you build these things to learn about them. So pay close attention as you build, as the School Principal will be setting a test later!!!! lol Have fun with it, Adam, and looking forward to the build vid already!!!! Enjoy!!! (Mark in the UK) Oh, and I thought you didn’t like photo-etch? Could have fooled me!!!😜😜
+Mark Pearce I don't like Photo-etch, and I'm very much not comfortable with this but a few friends talked me in to it and I figure I'll give it a go.
+Adam Mann Sure you’ll ‘nail it’ Adam, like everything with tracks that you’ve ever built. So opting for all that aftermarket PE is adopting the ‘kill or cure' therapy, is it? lol Looks a great kit, but yet again, Dragon ‘short changes’ us with DS tracks instead of Magic Tracks, I see! lol Enjoy remainder of your evening... mine is already gone! Have. Good week, Cheers, Mark By the way, I think the really long piece with the pointy bits at each end is called the floaty thing!!!! PMSL 😱😱
+Mark Pearce By the way, It seems Dragon has started to use Magic Track again. Even adding a new logo to the box saying "Magic Track Included"
DUKE OF YORK IS ON THE PROWL....
when I saw the toothpick and realized how big it was, I was like WTF?! good luck!
+Military History I thought the same thing. Thanks.
I wish you luck on this one my friend. Hope you do some some build videos on your progress.
+Fibroman thansk very much. I will for sure show updates, not sure how much build I'll film, but everyone will see it for sure.
is that one complex model Adam ! like holy shit ! but it ins't she a beauty !
also thanks for the mention :P
+Shane Smyth You know it baby
Once the ship building bug bites you, you're going to be hooked. :-)
I keep picking this kit up, and wanting to dive in. It's started but I'm scared honestly.
I have the 1941 version of this kit after my other Alaska gets done its next.
Well its a battlecruiser not a BB. Man you lucky luuuuuucky boy you!!!!!!! I want this kit sooooooo bad!
You wanted long term? I would say you found it in that kit! But, it looks like it will be quite the kit when it's finished. And I am sure it will turn out fantastic!
+Sgt Bones I'm not as sure, but it is a massive and awesome kit.
Adam Mann
Mr. Mann, has Dragon produced 1/350 scale Prince Eugene? Thank you for your time. God's speed. Mike
You having a ship makes me want a ship your the best
+glen-ross mullen Thanks. Having a ship is one thing, making it well is another.
Nice, what a challange. Good luck
+WarWarNeverChanges Might just break me this one.
yikes Adam. cool review and good luck.
+Clayton McClain I'll need that luck for sure.
This is a massive kit hope you got a good PE bending tool.
+AltCtrlFreak I have a decent one yeah, doesn't make me any more confident.
Those are some small parts good God!!
have you seen the "world of ships" italeri models? i think they make the scharnhorst too!
Nice vid! Actually the Scharnhorst class are known as battleships or battlecruisers, not a heavy cruiser or pocket battleship (those 2 terms are for the Deutschland class pocket bbs) :)
Pocket bb is not a real ship class, Deutschland was basicly like a pre treaty armored cruiser built with more modern technology. Armored cruisers were often basicly "pocket battleships" next to their pre drednoughts contemporaries. Peoples are to obsessed with naval treaty ship classes which are basicly made up and were dropped partway ww2.
Just curious did you ever finish the Scharnhorst build ???
would anyone have any tips on painting the white lines on the camo on the hull?
Adam, look up Guido Hopp of "Tailor Made Models". There is one of the finest ship modelers.I believe he is on the ISM (International Modeler's Forum. And on You Tube.He is German very precise modeler and very gregarious. So hit him up for help if needed.I am sure he can and will.Just take one step at a time. You will do fine young Padawa(sp)n.BC
+Bret Crane I mention Guido in the video and the description. I am very familiar with his work and have already told him to expect some questions.
Did you ever get this built? Would love to see the finished model.
What was the RUclips name of the two guys that were ship builders, I'd like to subscribe to their channel. I'm building Dragon's #1029 1/350 Gearing class destroyer it's my first ship. Looking forward to your video of this ship, I want to build it next.
+ke1stcav II'll put their names in the description, I meant to do that. But the main guy is Guido Hopp who has a channel here
ruclips.net/user/bilk1968
And Shane Smyth who hasn't done as much naval stuff as Guido, but certainly more than I.

Hi Adam, how's your progress on this?
Never seen anything like this totally complex I have built a bismarck and yamato from tamiya.
+comeandsee2012 Yeah, I probably should have started with something a bit more reasonable, but I was asked what kit I wanted but wouldn't buy for myself, and this is what it was.
+Adam Mann they have the new one now a 1941 kit #1036
+Adam Mann I am also into this kind of stuff currently finishing the brand new tamiya kit sherman easy eight european theater
I've looked at that E8 kit, looks pretty good.
+Adam Mann just finished it today planning on buying a jagdpanzer iv or panzer III well all tamiya kits are made here in the philippines.
I like how you know everything on the Tigers down to the nuts and bolts and you just buy a ship kit and just start using pronouns for everything :) Also, I suggest you get a dragon 1/350 us destroyer for your second ship model
+Michael Chang I have to admit when I don't know something. Ships are beautiful, but I'm very new to it.
