Thank you for sharing your home with us. Great decisions on the ways you're making that home serve your needs. Bravo! My husband and I completely agree about Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude... the ship with orchids was magical.( I just had trouble with the time sequences. Also loved Love in the Time of Cholera. We're working our way through your list of recommended books and have enjoyed all of them so far.) You videos keep getting better and better. Your humor and interactions are so engaging. I can't wait to get back to Spain and take one of your tours. In a couple of homes in Spain, we saw some wall mounted shoe storage cabinets that were very sleek and didn't take up much space. Stay safe! Thanks again! Great fun!

Best video. Thoroughly enjoy watching listening and learning with your videos. Thanks for being so informative ✌️ and as far as those chairs you inherited with the apartment, don’t touch them they’re beautiful and in excellent condition. I would love to live abroad In Spain 🇪🇸 for a spell, i’ve been thinking about San Sebastian, as I would prefer to stay away from the larger cities, yet not be completely isolated either . Any info about the north of Spain 🇪🇸?

I was completely drawn to all the details of your house tour and I feel more connected to you, than I did before. It was adorable to see the earlier photos of when you first met. The space in the entryway has the potential for a bench/shoe storage combo, which allows you to store the shoes neatly underneath, but also lets you sit while taking-off/putting-on shoes. I did a search under "mud room ideas" and many photos popped up. I am equally a fan of rain shower heads because they feel soothing underneath them due to the many built-in holes which distribute water evenly. Also, the size of the shower head covers more of your body while showering. I do hope you have a mat in front of the shower in the hall bathroom. Marble floor is very slippery when wet. I have to give "props" to Yoly for assembling all that furniture. She is a force of nature !!! And finally, I will give you a thumbs up on the hat. I like it !!! However, I see you wearing it at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean instead of trekking inside a city.

Oh Yoli, I absolutely love you...when I watched you doing dishes in the tub, reminded me of an apartment in Brooklyn, NY, I lived in as a little girl. It was a very old building and the bathtub was in the kitchen. We had to draw the metal cover over the tub and use it as a counter top. My mother used to bathe us in that tub, clean it out thoroughly and also used it as a clothes washing basin, and yes, washing dishes. We had our toilet out in the hall, and had to share it with the other tenants on that same floor. We moved out after a year. Very interesting residence probably built in the late 1800's.

For your patio area you can build wooden planter boxes lined with heavy duty plastic, planting soil. Make a couple of vegetable gardens. My sister did it on her patio and she is very happy with all the fresh vegetables she is getting.

For terrace ideas; chaise lounge chair, bamboo plants for semi privacy (also they look very beautiful with minimal upkeep), a grapevine wood trellis with leaves for shade and green background, sectional outdoor couch with small fire pit that serves as a coffee table. The trellis would be a must. Check out some ideas online and they are very affordable.

I’ve loved Spain for many years, since my first visit when I was in the Navy. I fell in love with Valencia and have been many times. It’s an amazing city I just can’t get enough of! I’ll be in Valencia again in 11 days from now just in time to catch the last two days of Fallas 🎉 I really enjoy your videos I’ve learned a lot about Valencia over the years but with your videos I’m learning even more. Your apartment looks great! For some reason I thought you lived in Valencia I was actually going to ask if you would like to meet for drinks and tapas. I travel to Valencia as often as I can except during the pandemic. So I’m so excited to be coming back. I look forward to watching your videos and hope to see more about Valencia and the costa Blanca.
    Cheers!

In the entry, you can add a bench and put the shoes underneath, which gives you a place to sit and put them on. A mirror is always a good idea. I would add hooks to the wall (and get rid of the rack) for a cleaner, more modern look.
On the terrace, you could have a seating (lounge) area in addition to the dining area.
    Great place! Enjoy it.

  • @anamaria2053

¡Saludos! For la terraza I suggest getting some big, beautiful pots for some tallish bushes or smallish trees that do well in containers. These can provide some privacy and dimension. In front of these larger plantings you can create an outdoor lounge. I also suggest that you contemplate creating a trellis where climbing flowers can grow. You might even grow a few grapes. The trellis will all lead to some outdoor lighting, a must for your magical evenings. Raised beds would be perfect for a salad and herb garden. Think out door living and garden space! I also suggest a water feature. This would be soothing and mask some of the sounds that can bounce around the buildings as well as lend your place tranquility. Finally, to extend your enjoyment, add an outdoor heating element.

Oh, and also some hydrangeas ! Once all this lockdown's finished, it'll be wonderful for you guys to have a patio drinks party (as a house warming ?) with some lovely pinchos erc.. Have fun !

For your entrance I would personally get a thin shoe wardrobe, (not ikea) you can get them so your shoes aren’t on show but you can use it as a side unit as well if tall enough, put decorative items on the top, vase, candle etc, key holder-. Even get mask holders online. I would put a mirror above it to open the space and make it seem bigger. Add a nice umbrella stand next to it, not sure what to suggest about coats, maybe paint the coat stand to make it appear more aesthetically pleasing. Lovely house.

Thanks for the tour, and the before/after part; it gives perspective!
The showing a home, is a very Spanish (Mediterranean) thing. I still cannot get used to not having that experience when invited to people's homes, and the weird faces when I try to show my home, in Iceland. This, and the 2 kisses when greeting, it really shocks them! 😂
Probably, after 3 years you are done with all the decoration, but I would love to have a garden swing.

The apartment looks beautiful, great job choosing the materials, love the hardwood floors, both bathrooms look modern and timeless, they will never go out of style, the kitchen is very nice and I love counter top, the subway tiles and the beautiful floor tiles, a mirror by the entry is nice, this way you can look at yourself (make sure you look good) before you leave the house, the terrace is great, what I would do is buy orange and lemon trees, and any other fruit trees that grows tall so you can block some of your neighbors, if the any money left, I would also buy a small fountain so when ever you are sitting outside you can listen to the sound of the water. Thank you for the apt. tour, you guys did an awesome job with the house.

So much to say. But let's begin with how can I watch a video that starts with Yoly saying 'way' bigger and then miming sitting on the toilet? 😂😂😂
To tell the truth, I wasn't looking forward to this one. A tour of your apartment? Really? But it worked. I think it was the naturalness (is that a word?) and the fun. Oh and when I heard you had a sponsor I thought, oh no! I hate the overlong sponsor section that seems to begin so many videos. Well, you incorporated it and made it interesting and non-intrusive.
Breakfast; I'm with Yoly. When I lived in Spain, I began every day with a visit to the bar next to my office, where I had churros and chocolate and a copa of brandy. Hey, don't judge 😜.
For the terraza; herbs and maybe tomatoes on raised beds. You have enough room to be self sufficient without losing too much.
OK, enough. I really enjoyed watching this, seeing the place and how you live. Is next week to soon for me to visit? 😎

You found a beautiful home, and we very much enjoyed your very charming and original tour. Solution for the entrance shoes = find a rack that doubles as a bench, and hang one of the mirrors above it. After our shared love for the Camino de Santiago brought us together, we have now purchased a farm house in a 100-soul hamlet in the Ribera del Duero (Burgos) and are looking forward to renovating and furnishing it....the personal touches you showed are important and we anticipate paying lots of extra bag fees carrying our books, pots, and towels to Spain.....Feliz Hogar Nuevo a vosotros! Love your house!! What about a small bookcase in the entry way? Only 2 shelves high an not very wide. You could put 2 baskets on the bottom shelf for shoes (to hide them 😉) some pretty objects to reflect the colors nearby or wooden objects on the second shelf -
and the top of the bookcase which is about waist high is the perfect place for a glass dish to hold house /car keys or even a vase or something to compliment the mirror you’re going to hang. 😊

I loved this video! Thank you for sharing so much personal info. I feel you need you need to separate your working lives at home a bit more... difficult in these Covid / working from home times... The bookcases in your living room should be.. if possible moved into the hall where the coat stand is? Use the bottom shelves of bookcase for shoes. Living room area should be for total relaxation... ... a cosy nest winter or summer ...get that corner suite soon!. Keep all walls white. Suggest you put all or most of your art work/ paintings/ framed souvenirs on one wall from floor to ceiling in James’s office. Keep maybe one or two special pieces for hallway or living room. But the rest goes in James’s office. In same room get built in wardrobe space ... again floor to ceiling but with sliding doors to conserve space and give you clean lines. Suggest you put more shelves or cupboard storage above bed area in spare bedroom. On patio consider a large outdoor cupboard against a wall to hold bits n pieces you don’t use on a regular basis .. extra chairs ... that wine fridge which is taking up space inside! Etc. Group your plants for time being but in a year or so consider displays at different heights . I would also consider building an outdoor bar area with high stools and possibly build a long comfy day bed/ lounger for extra guests.
Just a few thoughts you two! Love the videos and wishing you lots of love and luck in your new home! Xxx

Just loved the house tour. Your reno is amazingly good. Those floor tiles look beautiful and I can see why it took so long to pick the kitchen. Sadly exploding oven doors are not that unusual- not sure why but I know a couple of people it has happened to and both with brand new ovens. As your Entry is the first thing people see on arriving I would forget about the Ikea shoe racks/cupboards and have a Bespoke shoe storage cupboard/seat made. A bench with a padded seat and cushions would look great with sliding doors across the front so you can store your shoes under the seat. I would probably make it to fit rather than try and buy one. I would get rid of the coat stand and maybe put up some lovely coat/hat hooks and maybe either a mirror or that large map of Madrid above the seat. The terrace is brilliant but does look a little underutilized. It needs some huge planter pots. You can get ones that are lightweight but look like Terracotta or Cement. Maybe also consider a couple of raised garden beds for herbs & small veggies. I think that as you both like entertaining you should have a much bigger table and more seating out there too.

You absolutely need an enclosed shoe rack of some sort. I would be building a privacy wall, completely enclosing the terrace. It's too much like a fish bowl. Potted ficuses or 4x4 posts in wine/scotch barrels filled with sand that support bamboo blinds. A couple of raised beds for vegetables and strawberries. A party sized grill with an outdoor bar. Built in colourful seating. Add some cafe lights and you'll be the envy of the neighbourhood.

The best of luck with your home lads; you are doing a great job. It looks really nice. I really like the jarapa and the framed map too. A pergola or a potted lemon tree would be a nice divider and give some shade. But you might need a water butt, to collect free rain water for it. Como dicen los irlandeses: May the roof of your house never fall in, And those beneath it Never fall out.

I love you too, you're so much fun! What a beautiful flat! For the shoes in the entrance hall, the hemnes and a mirror. I love bidets but for the purpose they are made, Argentinians have one in each house, a heritage from our Italian and Spanish ancestor immigrants. I also have a washer/drier because I live in Galicia. My husband is English and his breakfast is like yours. I'd have lots of plants, herbs and vegetables in the terraza and a canopy. Hugs

Doing a nice job on the house there. Beautiful kitchen and that terrace has huge potential . We bought a house with a courtyard in Almería which we have covered in plants around the seating areas but found we had to put some shade netting up in parts because of the fierceness of the sun on the leaves. You can use trellis to divide up areas, grow vines on and hide any utilitarian areas from bits you want to look pretty all the time.

Go with the Ikea shoe shelves, they really not that wide.Put it on the bathroom side of the entry. Use the other wall as an "Art gallery", you can even put the second mirror there, so Yoly can check as she goes out the door.

Have an idea for your huge terrace. Cover it in colourful spanish tiles, build a basic pergola and train bougainvillea, grape, or kiwi vines over it for some shade and a little more privacy.

SHOOOOOES! I love that cultural etiquette of taking off your shoes in the house, us Saffas will walk with shoes to bed. I'd say get/put-up a little bench shelve kinda thing that allows you to come into the house, sit down, take your shoes off, put on your slippers (house shoes) and deposit your outside shoes in the cupboard/shelve below.

You two are just stinkin' cute together! OMG! Okay. Some feedback. I love the camera swipe (don't know the correct term) when James says how he is learning to pivo(t) -- SWIPE! Clever. :)
My husband and I are both fully on board with James' maps and ship of pennants, and we also love the Toulouse map very much. (Very romantic, James -- good move, there!) Books, yes. The smell of them, yes. I bet you lived inside Arty Bee's back in the day. (We love that bookshop!) We think (husband and I) that ALL of your improvements are absolutely first class upgrades.
Yoly, I would love to see more of your Flamenca art and treasures, too! Maybe devote a bit more space to that?
As for that magnificent terraza, one thing that might work quite well is adding a Roman-style pergola to define a space to put some outdoor furniture. You could let grapevines or wisteria grow on it, as well. Many people opt to add cheerful strings of warm lights to a pergola to enjoy it better at night, and some folks invest in a "fire table" which has a removable top for converting into a solid-surface table. Fire tables come in all sorts of shapes and designs, many with a broad enough perimeter for keeping plates of food and glasses of wine while still enjoying a cheerful flame in the middle -- I'm sure you've enjoyed some like that already. Anyway, it's an idea. If you do go with a pergola idea, make sure to bolt the supporting posts to the terraza floor so it doesn't blow over in a high wind.
Cheers, and thanks, again, for sharing!

Great space which you've made so livable. I'd be looking to get some good potted plants (!!) like fig, orange & lemons - if your terrace can take the weight. Maybe you could put up a sail to shield from the sun, also with Yoli's carpentry skills, she could make a large planter with a trellis in the middle - so plant vines each side, which again will provide some shade as well as making a good divider. Great to have such a good outdoor space - love your tiles, too, glad you lost the hallway-loo!!! 👍😁💃🐾🦘🥂

Suggestions: Shoes definitely needs to find a home !! Its tacky .The Ikea thing is slim and will not take up space . Your collection of art frames are all over the place. Try to put it in the floor and make a diagram which ones goes to which rooms .. color palettes of the frame for uniformity too Choose a sectional sofa that has depth and really comfortable. Get an accent chair for some pop of color or accent throw blanket and pillows. Good luck

Thanks for the great tour of your lovely place. How exciting!! For your entryway, I see you have a freestanding coat rack. I think it would be great to find a single piece that's a hall tree, which is usually a sitting bench with either storage bins, drawers or shelves below it for shoes; the back of the bench extends up high and usually has hooks for coats/hats/umbrellas across the top; and sometimes is topped off by a top shelf that could hold other things like your awesome tourist hat which you should be wearing all the time :) or baskets for things like gloves and such. (Then you won't need the coat rack in the hallway anymore.)

Your terrace . . . . . . potted Italian Cypress along one wall to block the neighbors view a bit, even if they're separated by a foot or two. Also, maybe a mini gazebo with patio twinkle lights. My partner is a landscape architect, so he could suggest the best plants to make it lush and to guarantee survival in the climate of Madrid.

thanks STu for your update today. We were in Denia, on the Costa Blanca, fortunately we got out. We witnessed so many people coming from Madrid, moving tables too near us, to be in the shade. We’d been in serious lockdown. I’m not kidding, I don’t have a friend who went shopping or went to the pharmacy, without being stopped. So, some areas didn’t take ir seriously. We are back in uk, drove here. Now don’t go out. It appears the pandemic is with the young in both our countries. I don’t remember the police challenging young groups of kids on the streets. So sad, but anyway, no chance if parents, with their kids, teenagers at home, don’t lay down rules.

The Wellington photo and the Rothko print both have warm colors. I think you could do a really framed art collage on the big wall behind the sofa. You can mix big and small prints and incorporate the same warm colors to make it cohesive. I LOVED this series and your new home looks great ❤

You've done a great job on your flat; looks fresh and modern and the kitchen floor tiles are an inspired touch. How about some troughs for growing vegetables on the terrace and maybe trellises to screen you from the neighbours. I've noticed a lot of Spanish homes have their washing machines in a separate laundry room on the roof terrace or an internal balcony which I think is better.

I love everything you’ve done with your house. It looks beautiful! That light above your kitchen counter was a great idea, both for videos and just for comfort while cooking. You should get tons more plants for your patio-what a great space! You could easily grow tomatoes and peppers, have a big old rosemary plant and other herbs, and even some bigger plants like more citrus and a fig tree. And flowers, lots of flowers! At the end of the patio furthest from the house, it might be nice to put a couple chairs and a two person “love seat” made out of wicker or some other outdoor material. Add in a low coffee table, and it would be like a whole other room! Once the heat of summer is gone, you could enjoy it ant time of day. Have fun and enjoy your new place. Un abrazo!

Great video! Here a terrace idea from an interior designer ;) I would build a nice deep bench into the corner with a pergola above it for shade. You can add cushions to turn it into a comfy sofa and some curtains on the sides if you want a little privacy. Add a table and you can have dinner parties out there. Maybe even surround it with planter boxes of herbs for cooking.

First off, thank you so much for bringing us into your home, and what a lovely home. I love your patio table! The tile is absolutely Spain. I want to re-tile my home with similar tile to add a Spanish flavor to my very modern American home. I also want to add arches to my square thresholds. I don't know if you would consider that, but I think it adds character to an otherwise traditional square entrance. Love you both.

Nice house! Love ❤️ the terrace!
I have a big courtyard that gets very hot here in N Louisiana summertime. I also have lots of potted plants. They grow algae on the brick😱. It’s a battle every summer.
Im not sure how humid it is there, but if so my advice is 1. buy an easy to use electric power washer! 2. Automatic drip system with timers. That way you can travel and water your plants😊 that does make for more algae though.🙃

Great video guys. In no particular order. Love the terraza, love the tiles and yes the opening sentence of 100 años de soledad is perhaps the best there is although reading out loud in the original gives you a better sense of just how captivating it really is. GGM was a genius.
