Excellent Video Seth. Thanks for all the hard work making it. Very helpful and a lot to learn from and work on! Loved the part about how to block against the side spinny hooking loop.
My problem is forehand block against spinny sidespin loop. I can block anything on the backhand, it's never been an issue. My only defense against a hook loop to the forehand is make good and sure I loop... _first._
You are the first and ONLY one, that I have learned all the technics in the right way! Because of your very clear explanations, I was allready on may way, but you confirmed everything. The eyeopener with blocking for me is hitting the ball in front of your body! Thank you very much! Maybe you can also teach us how defending is done properly?
Thank you 🙏 I’m glad my instructions helped your game! I’m really not an expert in defending far from the table yet. I would probably have to bring someone who is a pro on the channel for that.
Great advice. I like that you addressed the block sidespin topspin from left handed players. The sections on how to practice each block and strategies for where to block were very helpful.
You are the best. I can recommend moving half a step backwards. Most guys i know which are bad blockers are glued to the table and take everything right there. This sometimes works with short or half long topspins but as soon as i play some faster ones right to the end of the table nothing comes back because it reduces control. Look at training videos from pros how far away they actually are. And guys please learn this! Basic blocking is not that hard and it is annoying af if you practice with someone and never get more than 2 balls in a row back even from guys who play a couple of leagues above you or weird sidespin blocks or horrible placement.
I have always struggled with returning sidespin balls. I was looking everywhere on the internet on how to return them. But I couldn't find anything. And finally someone who makes a video mentioning it. Thank you so much for this amazing video.
@@РенатРавилич thank you!! I try to make each video a one stop shop for getting an in depth understanding of a stroke or skill. Glad you enjoy the videos :)
Great tip at the end. I usually don't pay attention to the spin I give during a block. Now I know to pay attention so I can better gauge what will come back after a block.
Excellent video. I loved the tip on giving heavy back spin on a long push and get ready to block with closed angle; will try this for sure. Thanks for this informative video.
I learned blocking from playing people in the park that didnt do heavy spin shots, so I got this habit of loosening my grip/wrist on contact and taking energy out of the ball. After having started playing in a club, people seem to want me to actively push against the ball more. I am slowly learning how to do this because it seems it takes control of the spin when you do it this way instead of playing with the spin. Both things is good to have in your repertoire, like you mention @ 17:00 ... it was also impossible to block by solely using the energy of the incoming spin against some of the highest quality loops that I encountered when I started playing in a club.
@@PechPongTT Btw, do you know why table tennis players often stretch before playing as part of the warmup and not after? From what I have learned doing other types of athletics, stretching the muscle before a workout is generally not a good idea, especially in running. One interesting thought is also that, when blocking, people should not place themselves in a "defensive mentality". A block is also a type of agression when you move against the rythm, balance and position of your opponent. Saying to yourself that you are being defensive when blocking may cause you to form bad habits of backing away from the table or to generally be passive and let your opponent dictate the flow of the game.
I think the biggest thing I would recommend for beginners when blocking that helps me is learning to stay loose, especially on forehand. It's pretty easy to get a good angle for backhand so you can have a stronger grip and still get the ball down even if there's spin. But for forehand it's hard to get over the ball unless you have enough time to get really low which at that point you should just counter spin. But for quick blocks you should loosen your grip on forehand and let the racket dissipate a lot of vibration in the handle. It really kills a ton of the spin and speed so you can get away with blocking with a more open racket angle.
@@PechPongTT great video Seth . By negative spin you mean backspin? I would have thought that we need to add topspin to get that arc onto the table!? I have been finding it difficult to deal with these shots so appreciate your insights. 👍👍😉 Dan
Amazing video Seth! Could you do a video on counterlooping next? I’m really curious about that aspect of the game and about the decision to do a counterloop vs a block
Haha yes it’s quite comprehensive, I was originally going to come up with a practice plan for myself and I just kept adding to it until I realized I had the perfect script for a video 😂
Nice and Very useful tips as always, Seth. Id love to see your thoughts about atacking no spin serves and no spin balls in general, since a see many players ( me included) struggling with those shots.
For me I feel it should be treated in between an underspin and a topspin. The hard part is that you have to make all the work to make the spin since it has none. So holding the ball when attacking is important. Sometimes when my opponent flips a short push to their fh to my bh i chop it because it is really dead almost under and coming quickly and I feel no time to make a stroke so I chop it back and it seems to neutralize the point.
Good job Senura!! You did alright too Seth. ;) Great video man. Those spinny loops to my backhand give me fits - definitely going to try pushing down more. Thanks man!
Seth, your channel and this video are excellent! You explained how to do a block, but when do you do one? Would it make sense to try to counter loop a loop when you have a chance? I'm at intermediate level, and of course the pros can counter loop a loop, but to try to put topspin on a spinny loop is difficult to keep it on the table for me. Is it better to block this type of ball or learn to loop it? ;) A block is the only option sometimes when the ball is fast and you are close or caught by surprise. For example, do you loop from a distance, but block close to the table? Thanks for any clarity you can give!
Thanks for another great video, Seth! Your channel is such a gem! I love the tip on pushing down on the ball when they are very spinny! A situation I especially struggle with is players that play quite hard. I manage to block the ball, but the speed is too high to keep the ball on the table. Any tips how I could increase my control over those balls?
Hmm that seems like a tough situation, maybe try to keep a loose grip and when the ball comes try to feel you are absorbing all the energy. It’s hard for me to diagnose without seeing it tho.
You could try to give the ball some top spin, like in 17:35 of the video. It takes speed out of the ball and gives the block a curve so that it doesn't go over the table (or into the net) that easily. A top notch German coach just wrote a nice article about it where he explained in detail why this is the way professional players block (most often).
