This is him pointing the mirror at himself and realising he is part of the money game. And what right does he have to punish someone else then? Ren is a genius who loves to put multiple meanings into both his lyrics and videos. Sometimes little Easter eggs to his other songs too. Or references to other artists that have influenced his work. I think it’s rare or impossible for anyone to catch it all on the first listen 😅 Luckily everything he does it worth listening to again and again. Anyway, if this song is a history lesson, get ready for an economics class in part 2. It is a masterpiece.
My opinion is that Ren is the judge (singer) and defendant (guitarist) in this video. When he gives the guy in white eyes he can now see the evil in his own soul (eyes are the portal to the soul) and realizes that he is the enemy in need of punishment.
Ren and the videographer, Sam Perry-Falvey, this was their first narrative one-take and the stories behind how this got made are insane. Apparently, they had to break into this place to film, because they didn't have permission, it took over 100 tries over 2 days to get the right take, it was freezing cold, it's really amazing what they went through. There's a reason why he made part 2 as a lyric video.

But he's also been mirroring this guy the whole time trying to "wake him up" and "open his eyes." The entire video is a lesson/ education to systems. Interestingly with Lyme disease the first warning sign is a rash that is shaped like a target or bull's-eye "erythema migrans." Has Ren drawn the eyes as targets for a reason or coincidence? I doubt he plays around with coincidental symbols. Either way he can't bring himself to further torture sack man. The lesson is over his role is done There is also a ritual for trying to make someone "see" at a deeper spiritual level by drawing on eyes (there is a religious ritual similar, but can't recall what religion)
As people have said already, the eyes could symbolise "opening your eyes to what's going on" and he holds back from harming the guitarist to show they want you to blame our fellow strugglers instead of the establishment. Ren has said in a few Twitch talks and interviews that he has specific ideas in mind with some of his symbolism and metaphors (like the guy in the pig mask), but he likes to leave people to their own interpretations. He said viewers often come up with interpretations he never thought of that he found pretty cool and interesting. About the self-immolation at the end: someone in another comment section pointed out that a lot of Ren's movements were similar to that of the Buddhist monk in South Vietnam, in the early 1960's, who set himself on fire to protest the oppression of Buddhists by the S. Vietnamese president. Not only was the whole thing captured on film; it was broadcast around the world. (It was seared into my memory when I was a kid back then.)

We want the house, the car, the coffee, the clothes, the electricity and wifi...when the cost is the earth and all the humans dying for our comfortable existence.
I think you're nearly there, I think the person in white in the chair represents the anonymous masses, could be you or me, those who don't yet see the money Game & we enjoy the music that plays as we continue to participate at those in controls (Ren in this instance) behest without ever being directly asked... Ren sees it, through the "Money Game" and has animosity towards those who blindly go along & perpetuate this. But then, thinking he will bludgeon the person, he resists that urge, in order to draw eyes onto the blind (which he has been doing all along in the song to that point, telling those who may not know what the Money Game is). At that point, when he decides to end the torture (which is only really effective if you know it is actually happening to you), he realizes that he is part of the money Game when he sees the horror & realization of the anonymous player of music who now realizes. It is at that point, that Ren, dressed in green sheds the cape that covers him from the ugliness, the cape that would repel the bloodshed by keeping him away from it (money) and decides it's time to kill that part of himself to show the way. As he has done throughout the song lyrically, he does so as a visual metaphor throughout... And scene. Money Game Part 2, then Crucify Your Culture (Which further explains who is in the hood & why) but only after Money Game Part 2. Money Game Part 3 drops one day before the album.

Humanizing/recognizing the other makes you recognize what in you is like them. It becomes a mirror situation. So instead of recognizing the sin of "other" (i.e. greed), you recognize the sin of your own. Instead of destroying (killing) them, it's more of a statement to destroy yourself (I'm not saying that's the thing to do, but there's a long history of self-imollation as a form of protest). The overall video is fairly interpretive, IMO, at it's core, it's simply commentary of the state of the developed world, and how money supersedes all other interests and concerns, especially to developing countries, other humans and even ourselves. I believe the hooded character simply represents a generic wealthy capitalist, greedy and uncaring, and Ren is the protagonist, playing the judge, jury and executioner, but as his character reads the man his sins, he slowly realizes that any of the punishments he wants to attempt, beating, stabbing, burning, only make the protagonist a hypocrite, even though he's not as ruthless as the wealthy capitalist, he realizes he's been a willing participant in some way, of the big money game. As far as why he burned himself at the end.....This too, is just a hypothesis, but one I feel confident about, so burning oneself is called self immolation, there are Buddhist Monks that have made almost an art of doing so, for centuries, as a form of peaceful resistance. The most famous one being a Vietnamese Monk, in the years leading up to the Vietnam War. A videographer was there from the states when it happened, it was all caught in color photos/video, which was high tech for 1963, it is also said by some to be the first viral photo, making it's way to president Kennedy's desk in less than 24hrs, and worldwide newspapers in 36hrs. Like the raised fist being a symbol to fight oppression, "the burning monk" became an international symbol of peaceful resistance. I feel that name is disrespectful though, his name was Thich Quang Duc, a South Vietnamese Buddhist Monk, that self immolated for a noble reason, and was said to be in such a deep meditation that he never made a sound or flinched a muscle until his body slumped over due to turning to ashes. It circles around to this video because, Ren is a HUGE fan of Rage Against The Machine, and the cover of their debut album in 1993 is a color photo of Thich Quang Duc on fire, as a form of protest, so that might have been a little nod to the boys in Rage. So like Hi Ren & The Hunger, this was also a one-take -- took them 183 tries to get it. I don't know which one I want you to do next (after Money Game 2). Maybe Genesis (also a one-take, it's not so heavy, and there is an acoustic version, as well if you wanted to react to both), Illest of Our Time, Murderer (also has an acoustic version), or Animal Flow. If you want something different, Chalk Outlines feat. Chinchilla is amazing and isn't rap (also a one-take).
Congrats, that's an all time new high on the amount of takes I've seen people claim it took them to get a one take on this video. While I respect your commitment there's no way they tried that many times, even if they a 3 day weekend to shoot in a location they didn't have to sneak into, like they did this one.

But I have worked in video production, been at video shoots, really low budget ones with 3-4 people, 180 something takes is A LOT, trust me. Ive also heard Ren himself state a lower number in other interviews and twitch posts, so who knows. So like Hi Ren & The Hunger, this was also a one-take -- took them 183 tries to get it. I don't know which one I want you to do next (after Money Game 2). Maybe Genesis (also a one-take, it's not so heavy, and there is an acoustic version, as well if you wanted to react to both), Illest of Our Time, Murderer (also has an acoustic version), or Animal Flow. If you want something different, Chalk Outlines feat. Chinchilla is amazing and isn't rap (also a one-take).
Congrats, that's an all time new high on the amount of takes I've seen people claim it took them to get a one take on this video. While I respect your commitment there's no way they tried that many times, even if they a 3 day weekend to shoot in a location they didn't have to sneak into, like they did this one.

@@sunshynff That number comes from Ren himself, in his interview with Black Pegasus - and let's not forget that a 'take' doesn't have to roll all the way through - you could 'waste' the first 20 in the first 20 seconds etc. But again, it's from the horse's mouth so I dunno more than that.
@@Ph4n_t0m…Yeah, and there’s no way he was being sarcastic, or confused as he stated before the interview that the new regiment of pills and treatments at that time had him sometimes disoriented and a little spacey.
Im not discounting your hypothesis of him counting a take as Sam hitting record on the camera then 3 seconds later they screw up and say cut. But I have worked in video production, been at video shoots, really low budget ones with 3-4 people, 180 something takes is A LOT, trust me. Ive also heard Ren himself state a lower number in other interviews and twitch posts, so who knows. Maybe it’ll remain a mystery for the ages, either way, no worries, I was mostly just bustin balls.
