I absolutely love my 86 oil field jack, great workhorse knife. Have fun with your angus.
Thanks!
Great review! I missed this one but I did get one of the Acorn Jack in the orange bone. I am very tempted to add it to my carry rotation because it is stainless and you can pinch it (which I like in a user). The Oil Field Jack was one of the nicest patterns GEC ever (I have two) did so it is great to see them go back to the 86 frame. Thx as always.
I plan to use my bone 2AB!
Well Logan, I've been 'revisiting' this knife (same version as yours) recently, EDC-ing it for a few days. I'm warming to this beast a lot - a really hefty work knife, but still elegant enough for a gentleman's pocket carry, particularly with these ever-so-smart ebony covers and stately shield. My bull is losing its hooves though - soon the etch will all be gone...
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Awesome finally somebody has a video on this
Hope you enjoyed it!
I skipped these for the 2 Acorn Barlow and I’m really impressed with it
Yeah they’re awesome
Whaaa, that is a sweet knife! Wish one of the importers in RSA will import GEC.
They only make 5 knives a run so no one out of the GEC super secret collector club can ever get one.
It’s not really a club. You can join the Facebook group which is helpful, and you can sign up for email alerts from all the dealers.
Love the 86 frames. Have yet to be able to lay my hands on one. People get awfully greedy when it come to collecting these makes it pretty impossible to get them if you live elswhere. Dunno why GEC doesn't make some standard everyday sort of knives and sell them in line with their short runs.
Did you grab one of the Remington ones that came out recently ? About the only GEC I've been able to acquire lately with all the a-holes that grab them and put them on eBay the next day.
@@NOTHOTlanta unfortunately not. I'v got a 23 with a nasty case of double blade rap. I'v kept it cos I love the lines on it but I don't want to get bit like that again. I have yo agree with you tho, the way people mark up the value of these is beyond a joke.
Yeah I agree. It’d be good to have a standard pattern or something. Idk. It’s tough.
Where do you buy your GEC knives from? I have looked in a lot of places and can only find sheathes, hats, and t-shirts.
They don’t stay in stock. You have to buy them when they’re released. I have a video on it; ruclips.net/video/ZxjnVMz-CXQ/видео.html
As always, top notch review. The 86 pattern is a good one. Could you just summarize why GEC makes such small runs?
They make em by hand in a small factory in PA
They made the same remington knives by hand in a large batch? They can't do that with there brand?
@@mattwuttke I’d imagine that was a large order so they worked on that only. This 86 run they did a bunch of varieties between the angus jacks and the 2 acorn barlows. Just guesses though
I tried to find Randy’s comment so as to not misquote him but couldn’t. It was something along the lines of the workers wouldn’t like doing only large runs. 🤷♂️ I’ll see if he can give me a more direct answer.
How did GEC have time to make so many remington models but not have time to make any of there own models in larger batches? Am I the only one pondering this?
I’m not sure.

I like the fun names, although to my eyes that's a bull on the sheep blade, not a cow...
While we're talking animals, I'm surprised you didn't mention the elephant in the room, which is the ergonomic mess resulting from that high-riding closed primary when using the secondary. Not an issue for pure collectors maybe, but for those who use their knives as Bill intended it might be. I'd have thought GEC could've dropped the primary a bit further into the frame and moved its nail nick forwards?
I definitely wish the main blade was dropped farther into the blade well. Though when I use a pen blade it’s normally in a pinch style grip so the main blade isn’t as in the way.
Haha yep it’s a bull! I used cow colloquially, I’m sure my father in law would disapprove.
The pins to the left of shield look very recessed, supposed to be?
Lol yes it is
That’s how GEC does them. Whether or not it’s an issue is up to you!
You said Randy (if my memory serves, he's the engineer???) mentioned why they don't do larger runs online - could you please either link that or refer me/us to it?
Im wondering the same? They had time to do a large batch of remington knives but can't make time to make there own knives?

@@KnifeThoughts Thanks for looking! It actually would be nice to know more.
Moving's a bitch, hope you're settled by now. Took me months. BTW, I have a Blackjack so I was gonna pass on this but now I'm reconsidering.
Hey guys! What is the biggest gec model?
Depends what you mean by big. The #46 Whaler is unfeasibly large, but only in height. The #23 is a Jumbo Trapper, and the Liner Lock version feels like a proper fixed blade in hand. There are others which could qualify too.
@@davids9549hey man! long blade)
As for folders, the #98 has the longest main blade I believe.
@@KnifeThoughts the 98 texas whittler is huge but #97 are relatively large aswell
