The problem with trying to evacuate from a major quake there is that the zone of destruction, bridges down, roads broken up; is going to be hundreds of miles across. Sedimentary deposits are subject to liquifaction and roads may cease to exist, buildings may crumble into the streets. It is better to be prepared with a couple of months of food and the means to purify water for 2 or 3 months and a portable, weather proof shelter, than to depend on being able to "bug out".

I attended a FEMA class on the New Madrid Fault. The terminus of the fault line is Cincinnati. The bridge over the Mississippi River in memphis is moving. The near shore abutment is moving north and the west abutment is moving south! I hope we never relive 1811-12 event.
You know, a lot of people in the NKY/Cincinnati region do not believe they would be affected by the New Madrid Fault Zone. They fail to realize that the Wabash Valley Fault Zone is an extension of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. I believe there was an earthquake in the Cincinnati area during the late 1970s early 1980s. It is interesting about what you've said of the Hernando De Soto bridge -- that the banks are shifting up/downward, opposite each other - on both sides of the river! Can you explain that more?
Fascinating...and scary!!! I don't envy what area emergency managers would have to deal with in this situation. I know FEMA would do everything it can to assist once regional responders are overwhelmed, but I'm also concerned that the scope of this thing could exceed even their reach. I'm no seismologist, but it doesn't take much of a leap of imagination to consider the cascading and ripple effects of this event were it to occur these days.
In 1811 the mississippi ran backwards for a few days. New Madrid is so mighty it created the mississippi. The loss of life and property in the St Louis area would be staggering were this to occur today.
It didn’t actually flow backwards, that was an illusion caused by parts of the river breaking. It flowed normal after about an hour or two but there were new obstacles that kept boats from going further.

They need to be told how to furnish their homes so that a minor earthquake doesn't result in injuries or deaths. This should include small details, like anchoring bookshelves/TVs to the wall so they don't fall over onto people/kids/pets.
it's to bad that someone couldn't build a series of earthquake simulator type rooms around the country so that people can make an appointment to stop in and spend an hour experiencing various types of quakes in a very controlled environment so they would know what it feels like so they will be much better prepared for when the BIG ONE hits...it won't be such a shock...no pun intended

I live in central Indiana and I have felt quakes from the New Madrid fault about 3 times in my life time. One of them I was at my job at Community Hospital Indianapolis and all of a sudden the lights and power went off and my computer started to rock back and forth. So folks this is real and if we ever get a big one look out.
Seismologists are also concerned about a branch fault from the New Madrid that roughly follows the Ohio River along the southern tip of Illinois before turning north and following the Wabash River between southern Illinois and Indiana.

Don't relyon the GOVERNMENT to come save you. Food , water, shelter backups. Hand held HAM radios, as Cell phones WILL fail, and own and professionally train with a firearm. All are absolutely necessary.

It would also be much more deadly and generally devastating unlike an earthquake of the same size in California. Earthquakes here travel much further because of the infrequency and the type of fault. We also don't and haven't constructed with them in mind because of the infrequency. Whereas a tornado has very little chance of causing major damage or loss of life with a large earthquake in this region it is a certainty.

Maps of geoloci severity maps show the affected area of New Madrid is MANY times larger than, for example, the SF quake. That is, a * multi-state * area of the same severity. So when the time comes, it won't be a matter of a break in the road but of no road left at all for hundreds of miles...

Something interesting to consider: This upcoming quake could “drain” the Mississippi River. This means that a crack in the earths crust would open a hole large enough to expose the river bed in certain areas.
You forgot the cities to the south of New Madrid. Jackson, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Mobile Al. Not to mention the Nuclear Site at Grand Gulf Mississippi (on the Mississippi River.) There are folks living down here too.
Little Rock and Nashville are both just as close to the epicenter as St. Louis. They will feel more than aftershocks. Technically, it could suffer more damage due to being a larger city but not because of proximity.
The entire East Coast will be devastated as a result of the New Madrid fault line adjustment. What do think is causing all of the wildfires, plane+helicopter crashes and train derailments?
Nashville will experience significant damage due to becoming highly populated and the continuation of building more and more and more buildings, particularly made of glass and probably not being built to earthquake code. Couple that with how Nashville would be a nightmare to evacuate due to being in a crater/bowl surrounded by the Highland Rim (which could crumble). Also, Nashville is already nearly unnavigable due to the city being disected through the middle by the Cumberland River which causes major traffic problems.
Other experts think the next major shock will like be adjacent to the new Madrid area and that series released millennia of built up pressure/stresses, small shocks will visit from that sequence as the cratons edge continues to react to stresses from continental plate movements!

1811 1812 were the real deal. Sky was black in Cincinnati for 3 days from what I've read. Crazy atmospheric lightning like a tesla coil. A terrible sulpherous smell. Mississippi River was much wider all the way to nw Tennessee. Quake shrunk it's width. A dozen lakes created and many towns just gone along w the people. We r antz on top of a self destructive and constantly changing environment.
How will you fix the Gas pipelines that run from the south up to our most populated areas. New England States will go without a way to heat their homes. This is a bigger sutuation than just some Evacuations!
If you think you can escape the New Madrid, better think again. Do you have any idea how much power it takes to make water flow backwards in a river and make mountains widen and shrink in height? Your best bet is to go to an open area where if anything falls it won't kill you. Then all you have to contend with is the ground below you and hope liquefaction doesn't occur.

Well, West Ky is pretty much surrounded by water. Many buildings are brick and would pancake, or be severely damaged. Gas and water lines would rupture. No electric. Cell phones may not work bc the towers would be damaged. There are not many hospitals. Some of those are made of brick. I think most ppl would be on their own. It would affect ppl far east of the Mississippi River, not just the areas listed on quake damage maps. I don't look forward to that at all. You had every right to feel fear.
The video shows escaping through isolated roads. What comes to mind are people escaping with cars low in gas. They will run out of gas then will block the road.

Develipers, and bankers and real estate companies ahould be sued to the max for developing for profit in areas prone to catastrophic natural disaster areas. They put lives at risk for generations.
Get educated. No one will need to quickly evacuate during a New Madrid quake of ANY severity, except for possibly small isolated areas if and where the river floods them. Sheltering could be a problem for some, but this is a generic problem to all disasters and even every day issues like the loss of ones job or a bldg. fire. Severe flooding due to heavy snow melt, or a long lingering hurricane or abnormal rain pattern are much greater threats needing evacaution, but one should have more time to adequately get through the roads in these areas with these threats.
Google maps can help you avoid a tornado,so it should be capable of quickly and safely get you out of an earthquake zone or tell you’re driving towards one,the Tesla computer should be capable of doing this too.
After a Magnitude 8+ you won’t have any mobile phone service for weeks - because all the power and telephone cables will be severed. That’s something these shows fail to consider. Think Puerto Rico after a hurricane.
No. Not true. If you don't know what to do, then it is too late when you start feeling the quake. It is pretty simple though, 1) Drop, 2) Cover, 3) hold (i.e. don't go outside and look up at the building facade during the quake - wait under a table or doorway while the quake is occuring. If you are driving, most quakes will stop before you can even get the car to stop so you can look it up - not that there is anything you should probably do while driving as a [parked] car is a very safe place.
@@allangibson8494 That's absolutely true. I S. Florida, we had Hurricane Wilma go through in 2005 and nearly 100% of the cell towers were damaged. The weather reporters still say it was only a Category 1 storm, but it was stronger in certain places. Landline phones didn't work either, not Internet anywhere.
Are you guys serious? all of the cell towers would be shaken down ,your phone will not do you much good at all the power will be out. you need to have inflatable bridges floating pontoons with flexible bridge material to get people across waterOnly after it stops shaking usual but across the Mississippi you’re talking huge floating bridge .the last one in 1812 continued for 20 minutes at the stretch for days weeks and even months . it’s not how strong it is but how long it continues to shake things to the ground . as it was described in 1812 the ground opened up and closed on people they would fall in never to be seen again this is no regular California earthquake you need a whole different way of thinking to survive this kind of stuff.
First off....they can only guess at escape anything...the last one caused the Mississippi River to run backwards for 3 days. If after the next big one hits the chances are the land scape will look nothing like it does now...and if you are lucky enough to survive the event . You may not be able to escape to anywhere. Look at the historical data and theories. There were severe earthquakes of similar magnitudes on Jan 23rd and Feb 7th in 1812 after the initial event on Dec 16th 1811. Besides, surviving the initial event isn’t the challenge, surviving the oncoming humanitarian disaster is the issue.
FOX 2, do you have solid information on when and how that study will be released? Presumably since it's taxpayer funded, I would hope a full report would get released to the general public.

True, but there is good and adequate available information. The problem is that most folks in the mid-west and eastern seaboard don't read through them before hand because they don't think it is a risk that will happen to them. Obviously even these reporters and the interviewed emergency manager failed to read them and they are in the FEMA and MO state EOC prepardeness docs. They just have to take a look.

All emergency response and preparedness in the US is under the responsibility of local entities - be that a school, any public building, or a private one. Southern Cal has a relatively high earthquake risk and therefore those drills make a lot of sense to practice - particularly where our children are being looked after. Most people in the US, however, live in areas where the average person will never experience an earthquake - let alone a dangerous one. Between those extreams it is difficult to dertermine the frequency, or even if any, earthquake drills are appropriate. This is the point here in the midwest in the New Madrid earthquake risk zone. There is a chance, but there is no obvious immediate risk. These drills take time/money and some expertise. Further having weak or inappropriate drill/training put the building, business, or public entity 'owner' at risk of being sued as the actions recognize the owner believes the risk is material and therefore they are more responsible. Even from a purely ethical point, in some cases it may be better to not have any emergency response plan and related training at all in these low to no risk areas.
If there was an 8, the time to revover could be decades and ppl far to the east could also be impacted due to the gas lines running across that area., not to mention power plants, chemicals, even nuclear plants . The air and water would be contaminated from just dead stuff. Toxins from fires etc. The time of clean up and rebuilding infrastructure would be rediculous. Have they even cleaned up yet after those train accidents,. Theyd be years talking about who gets contracts etc and state vs Fed EPA regs. Forget insurance and help. Think folks in Maui got 700.oo and heard rumors of buy out deals. If you live in this area , far better to move out ahead of the mess than joke about it being " your fault" .

It's so old that the last eruption from that volcanic formation formed the Island of Bermuda out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean 600 miles East of North Carolina. You don't need to worry about volcanoes in Missouri, or really anywhere East of the Rocky Mountains.
Yeah sure 57 people died from the Northridge quake. The Kobe Japan quake which was a really bad one around 5,500 people died. Even the Chile earthquake the strongest ever recorded had around 6,000 deaths. Millions? Give me a break.

1895 was the last big one. The ones in 1811-12 were the biggest on record, but not the most recent.

Also, the Richter scale progresses geometrically, not arithmetically, so a 7.0 is far greater than a 6.0. An 8.5 is unthinkable.

I live in central Indiana and I have felt quakes from the New Madrid fault about 3 times in my life time. One of them I was at my job at Community Hospital Indianapolis and all of a sudden the lights and power went off and my computer started to rock back and forth. So folks this is real and if we ever get a big one look out.

It would also be much more deadly and generally devastating unlike an earthquake of the same size in California. Earthquakes here travel much further because of the infrequency and the type of fault. We also don't and haven't constructed with them in mind because of the infrequency. Whereas a tornado has very little chance of causing major damage or loss of life with a large earthquake in this region it is a certainty.

Maps of geoloci severity maps show the affected area of New Madrid is MANY times larger than, for example, the SF quake. That is, a * multi-state * area of the same severity. So when the time comes, it won't be a matter of a break in the road but of no road left at all for hundreds of miles...

Memphis & St. Louis will suffer the most damage from this earthquake. Not including the aftershocks that may be felt in Little Rock, AR. & Nashville.
Little Rock and Nashville are both just as close to the epicenter as St. Louis. They will feel more than aftershocks. Technically, it could suffer more damage due to being a larger city but not because of proximity.
The entire East Coast will be devastated as a result of the New Madrid fault line adjustment. What do think is causing all of the wildfires, plane+helicopter crashes and train derailments?
Nashville will experience significant damage due to becoming highly populated and the continuation of building more and more and more buildings, particularly made of glass and probably not being built to earthquake code. Couple that with how Nashville would be a nightmare to evacuate due to being in a crater/bowl surrounded by the Highland Rim (which could crumble). Also, Nashville is already nearly unnavigable due to the city being disected through the middle by the Cumberland River which causes major traffic problems.
Other experts think the next major shock will like be adjacent to the new Madrid area and that series released millennia of built up pressure/stresses, small shocks will visit from that sequence as the cratons edge continues to react to stresses from continental plate movements!

We r antz on top of a self destructive and constantly changing environment.
How will you fix the Gas pipelines that run from the south up to our most populated areas. New England States will go without a way to heat their homes. This is a bigger sutuation than just some Evacuations!

If you think you can escape the New Madrid, better think again. Do you have any idea how much power it takes to make water flow backwards in a river and make mountains widen and shrink in height? Your best bet is to go to an open area where if anything falls it won't kill you. Then all you have to contend with is the ground below you and hope liquefaction doesn't occur.
If you survive the initial event, there is an extremely high likelihood that there will be subsequent and more powerful events to follow.

Well, West Ky is pretty much surrounded by water. Many buildings are brick and would pancake, or be severely damaged. Gas and water lines would rupture. No electric. Cell phones may not work bc the towers would be damaged. There are not many hospitals. Some of those are made of brick. I think most ppl would be on their own. It would affect ppl far east of the Mississippi River, not just the areas listed on quake damage maps. I don't look forward to that at all. You had every right to feel fear.

Get educated. No one will need to quickly evacuate during a New Madrid quake of ANY severity, except for possibly small isolated areas if and where the river floods them. Sheltering could be a problem for some, but this is a generic problem to all disasters and even every day issues like the loss of ones job or a bldg. fire. Severe flooding due to heavy snow melt, or a long lingering hurricane or abnormal rain pattern are much greater threats needing evacaution, but one should have more time to adequately get through the roads in these areas with these threats.

No. Not true. If you don't know what to do, then it is too late when you start feeling the quake. It is pretty simple though, 1) Drop, 2) Cover, 3) hold (i.e. don't go outside and look up at the building facade during the quake - wait under a table or doorway while the quake is occuring. If you are driving, most quakes will stop before you can even get the car to stop so you can look it up - not that there is anything you should probably do while driving as a [parked] car is a very safe place.

The weather reporters still say it was only a Category 1 storm, but it was stronger in certain places. Landline phones didn't work either, not Internet anywhere.

Look at the historical data and theories. There were severe earthquakes of similar magnitudes on Jan 23rd and Feb 7th in 1812 after the initial event on Dec 16th 1811.
Besides, surviving the initial event isn’t the challenge, surviving the oncoming humanitarian disaster is the issue.

True, but there is good and adequate available information. The problem is that most folks in the mid-west and eastern seaboard don't read through them before hand because they don't think it is a risk that will happen to them. Obviously even these reporters and the interviewed emergency manager failed to read them and they are in the FEMA and MO state EOC prepardeness docs. They just have to take a look.

All emergency response and preparedness in the US is under the responsibility of local entities - be that a school, any public building, or a private one. Southern Cal has a relatively high earthquake risk and therefore those drills make a lot of sense to practice - particularly where our children are being looked after. Most people in the US, however, live in areas where the average person will never experience an earthquake - let alone a dangerous one. Between those extreams it is difficult to dertermine the frequency, or even if any, earthquake drills are appropriate. This is the point here in the midwest in the New Madrid earthquake risk zone. There is a chance, but there is no obvious immediate risk. These drills take time/money and some expertise. Further having weak or inappropriate drill/training put the building, business, or public entity 'owner' at risk of being sued as the actions recognize the owner believes the risk is material and therefore they are more responsible. Even from a purely ethical point, in some cases it may be better to not have any emergency response plan and related training at all in these low to no risk areas.
If there was an 8, the time to revover could be decades and ppl far to the east could also be impacted due to the gas lines running across that area., not to mention power plants, chemicals, even nuclear plants . The air and water would be contaminated from just dead stuff. Toxins from fires etc. The time of clean up and rebuilding infrastructure would be rediculous. Have they even cleaned up yet after those train accidents,. Theyd be years talking about who gets contracts etc and state vs Fed EPA regs. Forget insurance and help. Think folks in Maui got 700.oo and heard rumors of buy out deals. If you live in this area , far better to move out ahead of the mess than joke about it being " your fault" .

It's so old that the last eruption from that volcanic formation formed the Island of Bermuda out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean 600 miles East of North Carolina. You don't need to worry about volcanoes in Missouri, or really anywhere East of the Rocky Mountains.

There obvioulsy have have been very bad quakes in the past in that killed 10's of thousands of people and they weren't all that long ago, Japan back in the 1920's, Iran within the past 20-25 years had a series of bad quakes. Rome had some back in antiquity/ Ankorage, Alaska in the early 1960 had at least one bad one too. Then there was Istanbul Turkey back when it was known as Constantinople, (Byzantium) Capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. It cracked the dome on the Highia Sophia. The biggest Cathedral in the World.
