  • Get rid of that hydraulic cooling fan and go electric. Used a fan from a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.9L. This Efan was only offered that one year with the 5.9L. Used a Flex-a-lite fan control and optional manual on and off switch. Using a 10ohm 100-watt wire wound resistor (to replace the solenoid) to keep the ECM/PCM happy, no engine service lite. I know the Efan I used is very rare but there are other fans that could be used like the Ford Taurus 3.8L, Lincoln Mark VIII, Mercury Villager, and some Volvo models.

      clutch fans rob Horsepower. Even if you did the clutch fan, you will still need to add an electric as they did in earlier models. I love this E fan gives lots of room to work on the engine, looks great and lighter then clutch fan or hydraulic.

    Not real familiar with the Chrysler setup, but most import cars set the fan temps at about 10 - 15 degrees above thermostat temp. The stat will keep the engine at 180 degrees even when you are on the highway on a cold day. Setting the fan at that temperature will make it run constantly (and unnecessarily) because the thermostat keeps the water at 180 - even if you have tons of cooling coming in from driving etc. Again just a thought :) Thanks for the content!

    Nice. Thanks for this video. Love how clean your engine bay is. I bought an 04 with the 4.7L almost 3 weeks ago now. I have a crack in the radiator on the driver's side. The hydraulic fan has wetness in the center of the fan. The 5.9L Grands are rare here, but I did see that Flex-a-lite has a fan for our models. Really thinking about getting that for when I change out the radiator. Can't wait to get this done and hopefully I can figure out what's going on with my oil consumption. Hopefully when I take off the valve covers I can see what might be going on there along with the PCV valve mod you show on your other video. Thanks again.

    My question is how does your AC System working? Im assuming the ECM will turn on the Hydro Fan if the AC needed it, but since there is no Hydro fan anymore, how does the ECM control the AC system? does your AC system working properly on hot days, not exceeding pressures in the lines? Thanks.

    There seems to be arguments regarding the so-called 'best' cooling fan system. Several videos on the subject matter have indicated to never use an electric fan as your main cooling solution, while others say that they're better due to less front drag on the motor due to the fan turning. I'm kinda stuck in the middle and see the pros and cons of both solutions. I have the 4.0 with the belt-driven fan assembly and recently saw a video to upgrade the clutch and fan with parts that fit Ford Explorers, Expeditions, etc.. The fan has twelve blades as opposed to five and the clutch is supposedly better in terms of quality and reliability. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Martin, I'm assuming you feel electric may be the best, but I don't have a terminal for a main fan, only one for the condenser fan. Thanks everybody and I apologize for the long ass comment.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  3 года назад +1

      I find it funny that some videos out there would say that an E-fan should never be used as the primary fan, when the are countless vehicles that only have E-fans and work great in controlling the engine temp. I couldn't be happier since I've installed this E-fan in my Jeep.

    Hi Martin, new question. The adapter you drilled from 1/8 to 1/4 npt, it has a small screw to ground it. I ordered the same adapter from Amazon. I notice when you checked it with your heat gun it didn't have the second wire coming from the ground point. Is it needed or not? I installed mine, and grounded it also, but didn't work. I'm thinking the sensor is bad because many other people left reviews saying the sensor didn't work for them, so I going today to the autoparts to find a "working" sensor. Thank you.

    This is very interesting to me, I must be one of those few people who likes the hydro fan and how it works. What would be the main reason for doing this conversion? Enless it broke or failed. I’d say that at full speed the hydro fan can still move more air than the 5.9 fan (I have a 5.9 limited). Yea the hydro fan can act a little lethargic in stock form, it seems to give the bare minimum air requirement but in spite of that it’s never let my Jeep overheat in the most severe conditions. You cleverly showed how to turn up the solenoid too in the last video if you want to wake the fan up a bit and make it run cooler.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  5 лет назад +1

      Even with the mod that I did to the solenoid, I would see temps at 215* plus and for me, that is to hi. I am trying to achieve the best performance not necessarily the best MPG. The engine will get it's best MPG at 204* that is what the PCM is trying to maintain but not doing a very good job at it.

    I'm an interest out of germany, so excuse me for some grammar failures.
    1. how does the fan controller recognize the needs of the fan for A/C? If i'm on high speed, the fan shouldn't run, even if the A/C is switched on.
    2. Did you recognized a change on your MPG? So with solenoid mod in a bad way, with electric with the same amount in a good way?
    3. Does the sound of your car changes, because of the missing idle fan run of the hydraulic version?
    4. i didn't see the opening vents (high speed) of the fan shroud you mentioned in the comments earlier, do you have a example search tag for it that i can find a picture of it?
    Thank you! Your videos are very detailed, i like that a lot.

      Hello Johannes, My dad was from Germany and my mom from Austria they met in the states. I haven't been to Germany since I was 12.
      1. The fan control gets a negative or positive signal from terminals #7 and 8.
      2. The solenoid mod is only bad if you turn it one whole turn. Good if at half a turn. Did not see any real difference in MPG with the electric fan.
      3. Not sure what you're trying to say. I can not hear the electric fan from inside the Jeep. From outside of the Jeep I can hear the Electric fan more then I could hear the hydraulic.
      4. Are you referring to the flaps of rubber on the fan shroud that open at cruising speed? There are 5 of them, 3 on the left and 2 on the right side.

    Nice install, how come you opted for the upper radiator hose when installing the adapter/temperature sensor ?
    The lower radiator hose have freshly cooled water from the radiator and when that isn't sufficient then the fan should kick on , or so I thought!

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  5 лет назад +3

      Flex-a-lite recommends installing it on the hot side most likely because the controllers lowest setting is 160 degrees this could be a little too hot if you installed it on the cool side. I'm seeing a 50 + degree difference between the hot side and the cool side hose with this electric fan. I can literally grab a hold of the lower radiator hose and it is just warm to the touch.

    Hey man, as always, very high quality work and detail. Enjoy watching your videos and learn something along the way. In this rare case, I just have to ask though, why? In my opinion I felt like you made a downgrade with this one. Added complexity of wiring, controllers, relays, more things to fail, etc. The hydraulic fan is pretty darn reliable with the caveat of regular fluid changes with the correct fluid that meets MS5931 spec. Just want to know your thoughts, which I may have missed. I do like the AN fitting on the bleed port. About to tackle the radiator replacement myself. Have you had any issues with the plastic thermostat housings, mine started leaking randomly.

      @@martinbuilt thanks for the reply. Interesting results with the electric fan. Makes it all worth it right there. Must be why the alternator was struggling to keep up, fan is drawing some amps to pull all that air. Was the overdrive alternator pulley enough to compensate for the underdrive crank pulley? Do you have any spare, modified solenoids? I'd like to try one. Coolant for me typically stays around 205-210 and oil will creep to 210-215. Over here in Virginia Beach we have hot and humid. But, would be nice to pull those coolant temps below 200. I wanted to try an all aluminum radiator but not sure how they fit, mixed reviews.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  5 лет назад +2

      Yeah I do have a modified solenoid. The 205 to 210 sounds pretty much typical since the ECM is trying to keep the engine at 204 that is where the engine achieves its best gas mileage.
      I don't have much confidence in the aluminum radiators especially if you're referring to the ones I see on eBay looks like the same cheap Champion radiators I had put in my XJ I've gone through three of them in just a few years. The stock alternator was doing fine only at idle was the problem and yes the overdrive pulley brought it back up to tolerable voltage at around 12.7 12.8 at idle

      yes, but solenoid is not only resistance, solenoid coil have inductance also, that make difference. 10 ohms, more likely is ok, but with that possible create 5 times more current ( more likely limited in ECM), but 47 ohm resistor need be only 5W power rating, when 10 ohm need withstand more.

  • @laaaaaaaalaaaaaaaa
    @laaaaaaaalaaaaaaaa Год назад

    Excellent work that I will eventually follow for my WJ, but I want to comment on the efan controller install. I am using that exact same controller and water coolant temp sensor in my XJ to run the aux efan. First comment is that I am surprised you put the controller in a spot where it can be subjected to the elements. The electronics are potted and you sealed the connections to the high power wiring, but corrosion on the control terminals will eventually cause functionality issues.
    The other comment is temperature sensor placement. When the thermostat is closed, there will be minimal coolant flow through the radiator causing a fair time lag for when the sensor feels a change in temperature. This is less of an issue when the min coolant temp set point is significantly above the thermostat opening point, but if trying to set the efan to control right at the thermostat opening temperature, this is a challenging location to use. The preferred location in this case is in coolant line running to the heater core. This hose sees a more constant flow of coolant coming off the motor, and is better suited for controlling the efan when running very close to the thermostat opening temperature.
