I think, on the other hand, that Pears's voice was "weird" in a sense, but one gets used to it & then other tenors don't sound quite right, no matter how much more beautiful their voice is. And, except for one real blooper, Britten's pianism is marvellously original, dynamic, deeply musical. Love this! Many thanks for uploading it.
There’s nothing “weird” about his voice. I think what people hear is when he’s in his passaggio he covers it in a very unique way. Almost in a heady mix but much earlier than most tenors, around D or E. And so most the rep he sings is in that very developed mix. It’s beautiful and is a very proper English sound. But weird isn’t the word.
He doesn’t sound weird. He literally sounds like normal tenor. I swearrr the main people saying his voice sounds weird aren’t even singers, they just listened to Caruso twice a suddenly became vocal experts 😂😂😂
It’s only a “weird” voice if you’re terribly English and think that the closed throated knurdle of a second rate Cathedral lay clerk (e.g Ian Bostridge) constitutes a good and correct technique. It does not, Pears had a good and proper technique honed in a very English way.
Pears was a proper tenor ,nothing wierd about it, as compared to more recent singers. He always made the English language sound natural even in opera.

Bravo!

Many people say it. Dudley Moore satirised his voice... a v pinched, nasal sound... which infuriated (hurt?) Britten, not amused at all.
You can hear by his musicality that he was married to a genius and a perfectionist.

Voz engolada...

I think the "weirdness" that people are hearing is just the poor recording quality
Disagree, but like Pears anyhow. :-)

Weird voice?
Bad technique, compare him to Caruso or Gigli.

That weird bleating voice! Shouldn't work, but it does.
