- How Iranians celebrate the longest night of the year. Yelda night is the last night of autumn and the longest night of the year. Iranians around the world celebrate Yalda, which is one of the most ancient Persian festivals. The festival dates back to the time when a majority of Persians were followers of Zoroastrianism prior to the advent of Islam.
On Yalda festival, Iranians celebrate the arrival of winter, the renewal of the sun and the victory of light over darkness.

Mitra is also a major deity in Hindus' Rigevda and was worshipped in ancient Syria.
Syria was under Shonitpur (Modern day Iraq and most of surrounding parts) the kingdom of Asur King Banasur. Lord Krishna killed him in a Battle.
Happy Yalda! The birth of Mithra is what the Romans used to celebrate when they were practicing MIthraic religion which also called Pagan! When in 4th Constantin emperor accepted the Christianity as the official religion replacing the Mithraic religion the birth of Mithra was basically renamed as the birth of the Jesus Christ who was not born that day. This is when Christmas was celebrated on 25th. You need to read the details as how a few days differnce due to calendar...A lot of the traditions of Mithraic was transfered into the Catholic religion.
Also, the statue of Liberty is depiction of Mithra! Read it in french.

As a lover of all things Persian/Iranian - tradition and culture-wise - I do appreciate the link and similarities between the pre-Christian European Winter Solstice and Persian Yalda celebrations which ultimately influenced the more widely celebrated Christmas!
Mithra or Mehr... the God of lights
Howie, thanks for the comment, and Persians agree with you sir. Don’t mind the other comments, believe me non of it makes any sense ! and you are so correct, as Persians actually have a Santa Claus, named baba nole!

The festival of Light in india is Diwali aka Deepavali - the biggest festival of Hindus sikhs, buddhists especially , similar to your Yalda Night. We also believe that color of Red is symbolizes life, prosperity and all good things !!

Dear Sarah, in my language the word YALDA means a little girl .... I looked at the little details ... the beautiful fruits and stuffed dates which is one of the most delicious things ... a date stuffed with nuts especially walnuts is a winning combination. Thank you for everything you do for us.
Yalda means birth in Aramaic. I think this is where this Persian holiday gets its name from not Yalda in Hebrew meaning a girl.
Nice blog
Happy Yalda to you all
Thank you
