I'm disappointed in the comments. This isn't just a dude singing. This is a dude singing and playing without accompaniment and sounding absolutely perfect. It's not a voice, it's a talent. It's not just a singer, but a songwriter. I'm ridiculously jealous.
John is such an unappreciated talent for our age. Here's LMFAO with song writer of the year... LMFAO!!! I love everything Deer Tick, John McCaulley, Diamond Rugs, I love John I guess. He's the greatest musician I've heard live in my lifetime. Well I heard McCartney but that's almost stealing. John is our generations greatest musician imo.
I love how John never lost his essence over the years. He's still every bit this same guy, just a little older and little wiser. The same goes for the whole group. Deer Tick will always be one of my favorites and will forever hold a special place in my heart and life. Love you guys. Thanks for all the years.
My dad listened to this album on repeat for a good few months during my parent's divorce. I still love though just as much as i love oversharing on the internet
Lol, I love hearing Denis in this.. Especially to Pink houses when he says I donno what you're talking about to John haha. Can I please have 49 beers with all you guys! I love you boys!!
I used to listen to These Old Shoes on repeat around 2010 and I just remembered it today after a long, long, lonely walk and 'hey let's check if the band has some other great tunes' and boy, oh boy they do. This song is a masterpiece.
this is fantastic. a great song and a very cool setting to hear it in. thanks for the upload. The last verse of this song never fails to give me chills everytime I hear it
He's got one of the coolest voices for this type of indie folk, it's one you start singing when you wake up in the morning and not know why but besides how amazing that cadence is and the words, the raspy ups in downs in the voice are so fkn sick, it's punk and yet still very touching
Well same with me, I know what you mean. It's just a hard thing to approach. People ragging on him for it is bullshit, but it would also be horrible if he ended up like Townes Van Zandt.
the chord progression is C Am Em G, but with a capo on the 5th fret. ( F Dm Am C) I'll just pretend there is no capo. At 3:44 he plays the same chords but when he makes the Em chord he quickly moves up the neck playing another Em using the Dm finger arrangement (but 2 frets up). After that he goes to the G chord but adds a 7th note for a G7 sound. Then picks up the C and repeats. the Dm finger arrangement. www.wikihow.com/Play-D-Minor-on-Your-Guitar

If he supposedly wrote it drunk, he can sure as hell sing it drunk too, if he so pleases. Thanks for your "wise words," though...
