Hannikainen composed this in 1917-20 in St. Petersburg while studying with Siloti. The score was left slightly unfinished and was not printed during the composers lifetime. Hannikainen gave the premier with Kajanus in 1920. Then, in 1958 pianist Tapani Valsta and Helsinki Philharmonia (dir. Tauno Hannikainen) recorded it. In 1980 it was performed by pianist Nijole Kasperaviciute with dir. Onni Kelo with two different Finnish orchestras. Present tape was made in 1992.

Very interesting work. The piano and orchestra have strong Rachmaninov tones. This is definitely a major piano concerto, equal to great concertos of Rachmaninov.

This is q wonderful piano concerto! What a shame it is not more widely known.
There will be a public performance of this concerton in Lahti on Dec 6th 2013. Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Arto Satukangas as soloist. There is an interesting teacher-pupil chain present: Liszt-Siloti-Hannikainen-Valsta-Satukangas.

This piece is beautifully done at the compositional and performance level. How it has remained hidden is a musical travesty, for its emotional evocation is profound, sound quality notwithstanding. Muchas gracias! I love it!

There was actually a historical recording of the concerto from 1957 released by Finlandia Records in 1991. But Finlandia Records has been dead and buried for over a decade. This piece was not played for decades at all, but nowadays once in a few years somebody might actually play it live in Finland. Hannikainen was very talented composer and pianist, cousin of Ziloti - it is a pity that he virtually stopped composing for the piano after 1922; insomnia, etc. He was very much liked as a pedagogue. He wrote some nice Rachmaninov style piano pieces already at the age of 14 and 15.
You mention that Hannikainen was a cousin of Alexander Siloti (my grandfather). Hannikainen was Finnish and Siloti was Russian. Do you have any more details on their relationship?
ASiloti Yes, I do! Hannikainen also did dedicate some of his solo piano pieces to members of the Siloti family, which is visible in the printed scores.
I had this 1957 CD, but it was a somewhat of a disappointment. That recording wasn't... particularly well-refined compared to this one by Satukangas. I might upload it later though just for comparison. This is one great PC though and deserving of more great performances like this in the future.
The score is enigmatic. This recording was done with handwritten manuscript. Only in 2003 a publisher minervakustannus and Jani Kyllonen compiled the score with piano reduction of the orchestral score. I do not know, if the score is commercially available, those interested might contact minervakustannus.

A magnificent piece of music, highly virtuosic, and it is to Mr. Satukangas' credit that he championed it. Sadly, when I Googled this fine artist, I learned that he passed away on August 19, 2014 (just three months ago) at the age of 51. On the strength of this recording alone, we must conclude that his was a huge talent. One hopes that a work such as this - and, indeed, so many more to which we have been given access thanks to Corentin Boissier's enterprise - will eventually be revived in the recording studio and accorded a state-of-the-art performance. And yes, there is no doubt a touch of Khachaturian in the first movement - and does anybody hear the gentle nod to Grieg in the second?

+dck@toronto I always feel that if we never hear Gliere's 2nd Symphony performed, then what chance do far lesser known geniuses have? I once read that even Schubert and Bizet had problems with their public or with exposure
I heard a bit of George Gershwin in the last movement and also Edvard Grieg. Thanks for your thoughts on this concerto. I had never heard of the composer or the artist.

I wish people would just listen to the music itself and stop comparing it with other composers or even worse : which composer is better... I think this is a very interesting concerto and would like it to be performed more often.

A veces se me hace difícil pensar que este concierto no sea mas conocido, no entiendo si es que no se le dio importancia o es que no interesa que se escuche salvo a los que todos conocemos grandes conciertos para piano, porque de verdad que este debe de estar en el repertorio de cualquier virtuoso del piano. Hay cosas que aún no comprendo en esta vida...

There is at 1:40-2:00 and again at 11:32-11:50 a motif used in the TOS intro of Lost in Space in it's original theme. In my opinion, it's too close to be a coincidence. 😀

What can I think of this Concerto? The composer has heard of Rachmaninoff; if one hasn't detected that fact throughout the piece, it comes in undisputed fashion at 32:43, sans his melodic genius, needless to say. And I'm reminded also of Richard Addinsell (would you believe?) at 9:43 forward. And a distinctly Spanish influence appears at 10:46. Its various influences and "in-your-face" melodies dares you not to like it - and I do, as rhetorical and predictable as it is, and with a half-hearted fugue at 6:10, and an ungainly outburst (to wake up the audience?) at 19:20.
Judging from this composition alone, Hannikainen was among Finland's greatest composers. He died at 62 years of age in a boating accident his friends suspected was actually suicide. If so, any of that foreshadowed in this piece?

Y en el canal di "fyrexianoff", encontrará cientos de otros... Más del 90% de la música romántica del siglo XX fue oscurecido deliberadamente. Rachmaninov, definitely, but also a hint of Khachaturian at the beginning.
Of course, Khachaturian was all of 14 years old when this was composed.
@@jarmokankaanpaa6528 yeah that's ridiculous - and of course Armenian folk melodies, the big hallmark of Khachaturian's style, would've been the last thing this composer would incorporated. I suspect that by "Khachaturian" he just means Prokofiev. I thought I heard some Prokofiev especially in the interplay between piano and castanets in the passage that begins around 1:40, but then Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto, famously featuring castanets, wasn't premiered until 1921. Maybe we shouldn't look for parallels with more famous composers and just enjoy this fine music on its own merit...

Yes, it is a fine work. But perhaps I would want more musical flow and expressivity from both soloist and conductor. The monumental aspect is maybe too much in evidence here.

La comparaison avec Rachmaninov ne tient pas... Ce concerto est de bonne qualité, mais Rachmaninov est cent fois plus inventif dans le mariage piano-orchestre, même si certains thèmes ont une certaine parenté... On sent qu'à certains moments, il a fallu insérer le piano mais que ça ne s'imposait pas absolument, que c'était pour ne pas laisser le soliste dans son coin, alors que sa présence venait un peu en "cheveu sur la soupe". Bref cela n'empêche pas d'apprécier cette oeuvre un peu ébouriffée, où imagination et logique compositionnelle se tirent souvent la bourre !
Amazing piano technique and beautiful music. But I don't hear any beautiful or haunting melodies appear in other great Russian composers' music. Rachmaninoff is much more talented.
He is a talented composer, but is not a genius like Rachmaninoff. So, maybe for that, his music is not in the frequent repertory.
Hannikainen's concerto is not in the frequent repertory also because it has not been printed. There should also be commercial recordings for it. The problem is that Hannikainen's family has not agreed on the copyright issues and that is why it is difficult to publish this music as a score or as a CD! This piece has existed until the last years only as a manuscript. Even now, you have to know where to get the printed score and ask for it, it is not officially published. If there was a normal score to be purchased from a music shop, I believe this piece would be played much more often. Naturally not as often as the 2nd or 3rd concertos of Rachmaninoff, but I think this piece is definitely worth to be performed more.

I respectfully disagree with your comment " not a genius like Rachmaninoff."...he was definitely a genius, just different. This work, at times, (like Rachmaninoff) is sublimely beautiful, brilliantly constructed encompassing those components of piano that rise above Mt Everest and require such a virtuoso as Arto Satukangas to pull off and I see the world has lost him just recently..

Not every composer had the talent Rachmaninoff had yet their works are played and not placed in obscurity as what has been done to this one. I find this is a very beautiful and refreshing work certainly worthy of much more frequent performances. Just like it is not fair to compare Nikolai Medtner to Rachmaninoff, neither is it fair to compare this composer to him also.
I must say that was truly awful and I'll never listen to it again!
Also ready for a film from Hollywood. This composer misses the point. Hang it up on the wall.
