This is Gere's best performance. There is a saying in the film world that an actor has a role nailed. Gere has this character in the palm of his hand. He really understands the part, planned it in advance, primed it technically, and lit it up with talent. Every second he is on screen he knows what this guy is thinking and he knows how he will present it. Because the film did not do that well, and its a remake of a true cinema classic, his playing here became one of the most underrated acting performances of the eighties.
one of the most epic, dreamy and influential pieces of film for a long time. The Philip Glass score combines perfectly with the dreamy dusty art deco scenery in this film
Beautiful scene, beautiful Valerie Kaprisky, beautiful music, beautiful movie!! Richard Gere was superb, Valerie Kaprisky was equally superb and there is no way I will ever get sick of this movie after watching it countless times. This movie combines a lot of my passions too.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I remember seeing it 3X back I think in 1982!! It was a sleeper HIT and I love the movie. Soooooo cool man...............! Richard Gere was awesome in this 1980's flick!! This movie helped launch a wild decade of fun and debauchery..............! Let's reinvent the myths of the ages and do it all over again!
Think i saw this a Thousand times, couldnt get enough of it. 34 years later, and still living it, My xxxs all know me by that, "O you, that RG person" go figger.
Glad you liked it. I didn't realize so many people (relatively speaking) had found the clip I posted so many years ago. The movie is a real gem. I just googled Gere (because so many of my favorite actors are gone now), he's alive, and he's only 3 years older than me. Wow!
@@tbthomas5117 I thank you for your words. I think a great film becomes truly great and becomes a legend when the soundtrack is tailor-made and connects you with the film, the actor and the music for the rest of your life. all the best for you, Paul

I loved this movie so much when I saw it in 1983 that in 1985 when I moved to the big city I got the exact same tattoo that Richard has in this movie. I drew it out on a napkin and went to Pegasus Tattoo Parlour in Edmonton Alberta and got it done. Cost me $10.00 LOL 30 years later it is still the only tattoo I ever got :) Cheers

Isn't that the truth? This movie never ceases to thrill me, and it should have gone on to be a big hit. Perhaps people like us can reintroduce this movie to the world by letting others know about it.
Most inspiring movie that I ever saw. The philosophy behind this movie is that the proper way to live a life is with integrity. Know what you want and go for it. And aim high. It is based on Albert Camus the Nobel price author in literature book called THE STRANGER. Good book and good movie. What is the point of playing safe. Use what you have to savor all that life has to give. and then die instead of trembling and fearful and then dying anyway. The guy with the most toys doesn't win. The guy with the most incredible experiences wins.
It's a great piece. Reminds me of Eric Satie. I actually worked it out myself several years ago (when I had a piano), it's not that difficult, took me a day or two. Well worth it. Glad you liked the clip.
This film flopped because the public has no imagination. They have no concept of ROMANCE!!!!!!!!!! Love on the run, passion...I can't see where this one went wrong. I love it.
Thank u so much 4 this video, I've always wanted 2 find this song again from this movie. I had a failed attempt a while ago 4 the song in this movie then the other day I thought I'd try again n used the keywords "breathless pool scene" n finally got it. For years I've wanted 2 learn this song on the piano. Cheers.
been doing it like that since 83, just came here to show my g/f where i got my style, she asked where I learned to kiss the way i do, told her RG showed me at 16. haha! lol! love ya Jesse! RJJ!
Glad I could help, and sorry for the typo on the name. I was thinking of Richard Gere when I wrote that comment and how smokin' hot he was back in the day. Glad to hear you've put the Breathless techniques to work! :D
I saw this movie reviewed before I saw it and this was the clip they showed. I had a big poster of Richard Gere on my ceiling and Bruce Springsteen on the back of the door
You and I think alike because I'd love to see another remake of BREATHLESS. Yes, I can see Penelope Cruz as Monica, but I can't see anyone other than Richard Gere as Jesse. :)
I agree with you. I think BREATHLESS flopped b/c the world wasn't ready for it back in 1983, but if it were released today, it would be a huge hit. I like it better than R&J, too. I think Valerie did APHRODITE before she did BREATHLESS. Again I have to say that it's a shame she didn't become a huge star. Look what playing Richard Gere's love interest in PRETTY WOMAN did for Julia Roberts.
It's still so unfair that Valerie didn't go on to fame as Julia did. Valerie was only 20 or so when she did BREATHLESS, according to imdb, and if life were fair, she would have become a huge star for that. Oh yes, I know that Kaprisky is her mother's maiden name. :)
You are gr8, got the info of the song / name details fiinally, was lookingg for ages. Fan or Gere...i have used his brethless techniques out there in the market :d , lol.
Robert Johnson, CEO of RJR Nabisco said: "People worship success, but they root for failure." Fosse puts us in that space with Snider, and it's a little uncomfortable. If you haven't seen Fargo, checkout a similar character played by William H. Macy...so desperate and pathetic it's scary. Both Roberts and Macy were so convincing in those roles, I wonder how they found the courage to go there.
I rented it from a local video store and just grabbed those two clips because people had asked for them. I think it's also available from Netflix. I didn't think the Paul Snider character was all that sympathetic, scary/creepy was more my take. I do agree that he's the one with the talent in that family. For something a little lighter, you might check out the clip I added from 'Cold Feet'. That's a great little film if you haven't seen it.
I think that's when Berutti (the guy in the car) says, "Are you wacked out of your skull?" This is because Jesse (Gere) gave the gun, his only form of defense, back to him.
The first movie I was ever in. Way over budget, took to long to make. I was on the film for one week in Downtown LA, and sat by Richard, and Valerie every night for dinner at about 1am. I was 19 years old,
I was just thinking if I were a director I'd love to remake this movie. It could be updated and make his hero Prince or Han Solo or something more modern, but some one with depth, maybe a poet. I don't know who could be better than Gere or sexier. Maybe Penelope Cruz as Monica? Who knows?
Oh yes, Star 80 is compelling & disturbing & it is shocking Eric Roberts was snubbed even an Oscar nomination..perhaps the material was so dark (it was released in late 1983)& maybe Bob Fosse made the Paul Snider character a little too sympathetic that it turned off Academy voters? It's the only reason I can think why Eric was ignored.
I've seen the original (French) version, and think it's good but not as appealing as the "new" B. It was weird in the fact that some of the action is jumpy. Also, the scene where the detective interrogates Tomachoff at the pawn shop is lifted verbatim from the original B.
Are you crazy? Why do you think they'd put Will Smith in Richard Gere's role? Because Will Smith does a new movie everytime we turn around? I don't see how that's possible. I think they'd choose someone sexier (though I can't think of someone offhand), and even if the nudity were taken away (maybe, maybe not), the movie will still have its merits.

Mijn herrinneringen, mijn tijden, Ik kon uren naar Nietzsche luisteren zonder ook maar naar déze scène te kijken, alhoewel ik een Die Hard fan ben van Richard Geere. Jack Nietzsche maakt de film.
Although I can understand the rationale for casting Nastassia in that role, I think she would have played the character too strong, too smart for it. Perhaps Valerie Kaprisky isn't a very good actress, but I think she was perfect in the role. If I had to pick someone else for it, I think I'd have suggested Mariel Hemingway. (If you haven't seen Star-80, you should. Eric Roberts greatest performance.)
Nastassia was great in Cat People, but would be terrible in Breathless. Same goes for Valerie as she would not be good in Cat People, but irreplaceable in Breathless. Same goes for Richard Geer. No one can remake this movie as these two actors fit their roles like hands in gloves. It would be a sin to replicate Breathless or even Cat People. Same goes for Gary Oldman as the pimp in True Romance or Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Hey, I have no problems with political correctness. I just think Will Smith isn't all that sexy. I'm sure there are lots of sexy male actors of all colors who could play the role, but I don't watch too many movies or keep up with what goes on in Hollywood, so I can't offer any suggestions. :(
I still think Eric Roberts is the talented one (& the good looking one!) in the Roberts family (seems Julia got the all the breaks while Eric suffered a drug problem for years) Thanks so much for posting this clip...is there any way you could post more of this Richard Gere Breathless remake?
Roger Ebert wrote that the Breathless producers wanted Nastassia Kinski to play opposite Richard Gere & it would have made it a better film. I agree...Valerie was pretty to look at, but a terrible actress.
This is Gere's best performance. There is a saying in the film world that an actor has a role nailed. Gere has this character in the palm of his hand.
