  • Hey rabbits!
Today I want to tell you a lot of things about German sleeping habits as well as funny expressions concerning sleeping, the bed and other related topics.
What is a Nickerchen? What do the words "Bubu" and "Heia" mean? What is a Betthäschen, a little bed bunny? And is a Bettgeschichte, bed story, really as harmless as it sounds?
Find out more in today's video - have fun! :)

The bed is a time machine. You want to lie there five minutes but you get up five hours later.

Nice lesson. Don't forget that Federn besides feathers also means springs, which many mattresses have. My German lady friend once told me that the feather in her bike's dynamo was broken and I wondered how a feather got into her dynamo.

Jetzt bin ich enttäuscht von meinen Eltern. Ich hab ein Stoffhäschen und meine Eltern haben ihm den Spitznamen "Betthäschen" gegeben.... Jetzt finde ich den Spitznamen nicht mehr so süß.

Hey! Where's the Betthupferl? Even if you're not from the south, you gotta know that one. It's a cherished tradition to always have one, actually. Everybody should follow that.
Also, this could have been a missed opportunity to tackle the saying, 'sich ins gemachte Bett/-chen legen'. It's bed related, after all. And one of our more unique German sayings, as well. If I'm not mistaken. Haven't checked on any translations of it.

yes i think the normal description of "Betthäschen" is a girl who is just good for "bed" and not more.
That what she describe as a "Betthäschen" is in German a "Dorfmatratze".

Something I like a lot is, "nicht mehr alt werden" which basically translate to "not getting old tonight". It just means, that someone is really tired and will be going to bed soon. Example: "Ich glaube, ich werde heute nicht mehr alt." - "I think, I'm not getting old today." - > "I'm very tired and will go to bed soon"

I find myself compelled to tell you, Trixi, that I find watching your videos extremely calming and uplifting. You have the ability to calm me down, to reduce my stress. Strange, isn't it? One thing is certain: if you are able to be so pleasantly kind in a video, I am sure you are a wonderful mother to "The Little One". She's a lucky little girl, having a mother who is so warm and kind. Yes, I'm sure you lose your temper, and get angry like everyone else, but I do admire your underlying decent, caring personality. Keep up the good work, but always remember to give yourself your own time! You deserve it! Thanks, Trixi! Tim

- Rammstein. I probably spelled at least one of those words wrong (My apologies to Germany in general, and Rammstein specifically). Every time I hear 'bett', that Rammstein quote goes through my head (and usually out of my mouth) involuntarily. I love Rammstein...

In Dutch we have the expression "Een slaapmuts nemen" literally translated into "To take a sleeping hat" which basically means taking a (strong) alcoholic drink before going to bed. It mostly refers to Jenever (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenever) but I mean, whiskey or something is always an option.

A rather old term would be the "Lotterbett". In royal/medieval times, there was also a "Bettkämmerer" ( someone who takes care of his majesty's sleeping chambers, usually an eunuch). Then there is also the "Schlafwandler" (=sleepwalker). If someone is very experienced in something, he/she may say "das kann/mache/beherrsche/erledige ich im Schlaf" (=I can do/handle/manage that while I'm asleep"). The word for a literal "Bettgeschichte" would be "Gutenacht-Geschichte" (Good-night-story), alternatively a "Schlaflied" ("sleeping song, but it rather be not the one from "die Ärzte"). There is also the saying "schlafende Hunde (nicht) wecken" (to (not) wake up sleeping dogs, meaning to cause/avoid unneccessary attention). Apart from propper sleeping (& the aganigi action) , "Bett" is also used in words standing for unpleasant conditions: a "Bettnässer" is a child, who is no longer a Baby, but stills wets the bed; "das Bett hüten" (to guard the bed) means, someone is to sick to stand up and has to stay in bed; and it's even worse when someone is "bettlägrig", meaning he has to stay in bed permanently due to a serious and lasting medical condition, or due to old Age.

Okay Trixie.. are you switching the focus of this channel from language to love (the titles of the last videos suggest so)? :D
btw, nice to see you with a bit less makeup again :3

I agree about the makeup thing. I think most girls tend to look better with light or (rarely) no makeup or doing it too heavily, though.

One moment of too much information, reason for sleeping on the couch. Interesting and fun video overall though. I love how you don't take yourself too seriously though :)

In the arms of Morpheus is also an English term, but I think long out of date , more common in the 19th century and even then mainly among those who had taken Latin in school

I was hoping for more lingerie, but c'est la vie. In English one term is to 'hit the hay,' which shouldn't be confused with a 'roll in the hay.' Or should, depending on your preference.
