  • Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) and three-day sickness are the same disease. It is an acute febrile illness of cattle and water buffaloes caused by a rhabdovirus, bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV). The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting insects. BEF is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, shivering, lameness, and muscular stiffness. The fever typically lasts for 3-5 days, and most animals recover without treatment. However, some animals may experience more severe symptoms, such as respiratory distress, abortion, or death.
The name "three-day sickness" comes from the fact that most animals recover within 3 days. However, the disease can last for up to 7 days in some cases.
BEF is a widespread disease that occurs in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. It is most common in areas with warm, humid climates.
There is no specific treatment for BEF, but supportive care can help to relieve symptoms. NSAIDs can be used to reduce fever and inflammation. Animals with respiratory distress may need oxygen therapy.
There are vaccines available for BEF, but they are not always effective. Vaccination is recommended for animals that are at high risk of exposure to the disease.
If you think your cattle may have BEF, it is important to contact your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
