It’s not really that okay. Orchestra and singers should work in synergy. Moreover this is a habanera, so its rhythm is similar to tango and should be played with more precision. If you want to make a rallentando you do that at the end of the piece, not every time, otherwise it’s singing Puccini.

    • @maxmaus9888

@@LCWMI this isnt entirely true all the time. I play in a pit orchestra and the number one thing our director always tells us is to watch him. the singers usually get their tempo from the pit before the piece and the director chooses the best cues for the orchestra. a lot of singers like to add grace notes and allowances in their singing to add more "drama" and if the orchestra followed all of those flourishes (which is impossible anyway) the song would have no beat at all

A beautiful performance. But this choice of costume reminds me of reading the history of opera: How nobles were allowed to walk on stage whenever they wanted, and would just stick out like sore thumbs simply because they could. This is what that director did: designed and planned this oddity and man is it distracting and annoying in hopes of being unique. Instead: this sort of direction has become a new cliche. It seems the real experimental and rebellious production is one that actually matches the score. This worst part is: this director HAS creativity. I think it should instead be used to promote NEW operas, and encourage NEW composers and playwrites to make a wonderful, whole new show that the world has never seen. Here, I feel like I'm brushing my teeth and chugging orange juice afterward.

Sunshine Sunshine I live near Stratford and actually saw the same play. I disagree with your point. Macbeth is meant to be a timeless play and the anachronism was an interesting choice. • @Jaydoggy531
      @Jaydoggy531 5 лет назад +1

@@moonfish3638 I have to disagree on that point as even though Macbeth is a timeless classic, there were circumstances about it. Macbeth is loosely based on a real figure from history, and Shakespeare's primary sponsor was obsessed with the occult (hence the frequent appearance of witches or other occultists in his plays). It had a particular place and people in mind. There's tasteful timelessness and then there's distracting ones.

Well, in Europe, this is the issue, they make these aimlessly strange productions under the guise of “art” and being unique. In America, many of them are doing what you’ve suggested - trying out new composers. The problem is, they all royally suck. They have no tonality, the score doesn’t even come close to matching the emotions of the scene, everything sounds like a broadway hackjob converted to an opera, and the contemporary topics they choose are typically very ill-suited for a dramatic music performance like opera.

i’m all for reinterpreting old operas and old art in general, but my problem with this is that it doesn’t seem to be fully integrated with the score and the lyricism of the habanera. i’m not trying to be negative, because i do like how daring this is, but it seems like it wasn’t fully thought out.
and also, i’m not sure about other people, but part of the reason why i listen to opera is because it transports me to different and beautiful places. carmen was one of the operas where i listened to it and i could hear the heat and sensuality. when i see directors try to reinterpret operas to make it more modern or “relatable” i think they sometimes forget the atmosphere that the opera embodies, and it creates a jarring performance. i think this dilemma happened here.
tl;dr i like the idea of this performance in theory, but i don’t think it was thought out enough or executed well enough.

You just sound like a bitter, old woman from an entitled generation that wants everyone and everything to revolve around themselves, where all things old must remain old and stuck in their ways rather than try daring, controversial and risky things even if they do fail, at least it was attempted. I’m sorry if that offends your senses but human beings are inherently a free species, we have freedom of speech and freedom of creativity, people are allowed to do whatever the hell they want with whatever work of art is presented to them. Modern productions do not suck, many have actually succeeded in what they’ve set out to accomplish whilst others have explored new avenues and done risky things with risky directors and have either soared or came crashing back down to Earth in a blaze of fire. The point remains that at least they did something different and tried.
Just because you can’t seem to grasp that and prefer things done how you’d like them to be done, doesn’t mean others didn’t enjoy this production, even if it was a minority. People all have different tastes, modern productions don’t “suck” (a child’s description) it’s simply that you can’t seem to take your black and white tinted glasses off and see things within a shade of grey as they really are. Deal with change, this world doesn’t belong in the past anymore, you must handle the future with grace.

@@haydendutton6916 Simply doing something to *try* and be different is so incredibly stupid. Carmen was a controversial opera in its days and received a lot of negative criticism. Yet, it is a widely loved opera today and contains some of the most familiar music from an opera. But that's not just because it was different - it was different with meaning to it. This production is just senseless garbage. At least it distracts from the horrible singing and crawling tempo. Dare to be different, yes, but do it for a reason.

    • @nukesakuji

@@haydendutton6916 there is no point in being different if there is no meaning behind what is shown. Art changes, but this change theyve done on Carmen is too nonsensical. So many ppl literally do not see the meaning behind this choice of costume at all. Could you? Im not much of an Opera person tbh, but if there are modern directors out there tryna make pieces like this different on stage, they should create something totally new instead of making something that does not make any sense to the music written. Not everyone is just upset here cuz they only want something to remain traditional, tho i don't blame u for assuming cuz i know there r ppl who r crazy about keeping the old ways...but some genuinely want a production to be presented the best way possible. The main person who commented seems to be very passionate about Opera, and understandably, this production of Carmen mightve ruined it for some potential audiences cuz it made no sense to them. Essentially, things can be modern or modified, be different but also make sense once on the stage. This whole bit seems like it was just done to be different. That does not bode well with something like Carmen which is highly regarded in the Opera world.

However, I judge these changes on whether they actually help or serve the story and characters and whether these changes can help bring a new perspective to the story.
With that in mind I really do want to know why they chose the suit for story telling reasons or if it was a "let's put Carmen in a gorilla suit cause we're quirky and camp 😜" kind of moment.

I Persive that is an the antonym of a popular opinion, but i really relish this version of L'amour est un oiseau rebelle(I guess that this is my favorite version). It's really Marlene Dietrichish.

beautifully sung and played! I would be okay with the gorilla concept if she'd been allowed to interact and flirt with other animals throughout the aria.. keep that flirtation and push and pull with Carmen's beloved followers and admirers all around her in the market square to show the warning she is giving to beware of not loving her!

Великолепные голоса. Восхитительная музыка. По поводу всего остального - думаю, «старым» операм надо оставить «старое» исполнение. Мир изменился, и пришло время для «новых» опер, которые будут исполняться «по-новому».

wow, this is creative and i really get the satire. bunch of sticks up everyone’s a$$ here who comments tho, yikes. i don’t think any of you are real artists here who comment. you have no focus on moving forward in any productive direction and if your pleasure centers aren’t stimulated immediately in the way you expect you feel you have authority now somehow? you never had any authority, being a robot is simple and safe.

Intriguing, particularly in light of the clip about the set, but I think ROH does this a huge disservice by omitting any context to the visuals or the performance.

Obviously the producers are so bored with the opera that they had to amuse themselves by seeing what silliness they could get away with.
