  • This film is aimed at patients who are coming in to have a pacemaker device fitted. It explains exactly what a pacemaker is, how it works and why you might have been referred for it. Pacemaker devices are fitted at both Barnet Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.
Before watching this film we would recommend that you watch the introduction films to the unit where you are having the procedure carried out to give a more general overview.

I had my op two weeks ago. No pain at all though there was soreness where they tried to push it under the skin. Pulling my back out years ago a number of times was infinitely worse so if you are having this done dont worry. They tell you to avoid electronics devices but years ago they used reed switches (in a glass tube) energised by magnets. Nowadays, I have learned, they use Hall effect switches which are much better sensors. My eternal thanks to all doctors.

Just had an ICD fitted at BGH. All went well and I haven't even needed any pain killers. Two weeks later and the bruising has virtually disappeared . Surgeon and whole team were brilliant. I was in and out the same day. Cannot thank them enough. BMC

I had a pacemaker put in on 8th of April. I had to be admitted two more times & two day ago I had my normal three month check up but I knew it was infected at the site, the Dr took a photo & asked me to take a photo every day (It's the weekend herein Australia & hard to take a pic on yourself. They gave me a big dose of antibiotics to take & now (early Sunday morning it's so sore & it has a huge pimple like thing that's full of pus, I can SEE it!!! They took bloods & will ring me next week. I'm scared. Let God stay with me.

Rosemary Lawrence how are you now? My mother is considering a pace maker since her heart pauses a few seconds and doctors attribute this to her getting dizzy and falling.

I had a Biotronic pacemaker put in me 2 months ago by the NHS. A biotronic Enitra 8 DR-T DDR it didn't hurt that much apart from about 20 seconds when something they did nearly made me piss my self with the pain. Jesus, I've had pain before but that was off the Richter scale. But I'm ok now.

I got a pacemaker implanted in 2012. Simple incision my ass. Omigod I was in so much pain for a long time. I only got 2 days worth of pain killers, then they told me to take Tylenol. Are you f--kg kidding me?! You dug out a 'pocket' in my chest wall! Now, this one needs replacing (6yrs old). I'd rather have my appendix out again.

Excellent information about the fitting procedure, folks...Thank you! ❤⚖👍
One thing I often question/worry about (If I ever need one fitted) is the sensitivity of pacemakers to magnetic fields, a problem in my case as I find myself around very strong electromagnetic fields quite often. Why is it that pacemakers have to be so sensitive to magnetic fields please, and are there versions where alternative control mechanisms can be employed to avoid magnets being relied upon? 🧲
    Thankyou. 😇
