    I own an Adam Jones epiphone Les Paul custom…I love it…it’s got a SD DDL in the bridge and a reverse mount custom probucker in the neck…orange drop capacitors…thumb leads…a list of cool features…I’ve had it a month, play it everyday, and have yet to need to tune it…epiphone shocked me with guitar…now I plan to purchase the “wino” or Dave grohls custom when it releases…

    They sound both great and are really close...I can not tell wich sounds better...in the end it`s a matter of taste...the best way to do something like this is without seeing wich is wich and switch back and forth faster...otherwise it's really hard to tell...but thanks for this very interesting demo

  • @RobTackettCovers
    @RobTackettCovers 7 месяцев назад +2

    OK so I'm listening through some pretty good dual driver earbuds...both guitars sound great...but the reason why I'm commenting is that there seems to be a significant jump in volume on the Epiphone when you switch from the neck pickup to the bridge pickup...do you notice it as well in the room playing the guitar? It seems to be there somewhat on the Gibson, but it really jumps out front on the Epiphone...to me, the Epiphone, if modified putting a GraphTech Ghost Floyd Rose on it with the piezo saddles and the acoustiphonic circuit board GraphTech makes, then both guitars would be pretty much tone equals...however, if you find you never use the acoustic side of the R40, then at that point, a big part of it would be which one do you just enjoy playing? My guess is if a person prefers a Les Paul Standard, then that person would want to play the R40, but if a person prefers Les Paul Custom guitars, then the Epiphone, as far as feel goes, would be the one they would gravitate to...what about playability? Because I think that is what really would matter...which one makes you be like "I just like playing this one more...it plays better than the other..." So which one do you enjoy playing better? Thanks for the video, and hope you and yours are doing great!

      Thanks for watching! It’s definitely noticeable while playing. The ceramic neck with AlNiCo bridge pickup is an odd combination, IMO, and is probably responsible for it. I have the neck pickups lowered substantially and you can still tell. The Epiphone and Gibson are very similar in feel, but I prefer the R40. The aesthetics alone make me want to play more and the trem is much more responsive. The Epiphone is a great guitar, don’t get me wrong!

    The Epiphone's R4 nut is a bit wide and either E string is easy to slip off the fret. Is the Gibson's neck a wee-bit wider?

    • @TheGuitarReliquary
      @TheGuitarReliquary  15 дней назад

      @@mdu2112 Hmmm, I didn’t measure the neck width on them but I definitely didn’t encounter any string slippage. However, the Epiphone likely comes with a Korean made nut that might have a different radius and spacing. For example, the original R3 nut has 10” radius but the BR3 has a 12” radius. I could have sworn this nut was a “B” series and would be different from the Gibson original version.

    The only thing I can see or hear that would make the Gibson version worth more is the curly maple top on the Gibson. It's more pronounced and appealing. Sound-wise though, there certainly isn't a $5k difference. I've got the Epiphone version and just love it. It's a beautiful guitar inside and out and sounds awesome.

    • @TheGuitarReliquary
      @TheGuitarReliquary  11 месяцев назад

      @@reubentrapp Most Les Pauls do not have the tremolo/vibrato bridge (it was erroneously dubbed a tremolo by Leo Fender in the 50s and it is still commonly referred to as such). Alex Lifeson of Rush grew accustomed to playing Stratocasters and PRS guitars with vibrato units in the 80s and 90s. When he “rediscovered” his love for Gibson, he asked them to put a locking bridge on a Les Paul for him and the Axcess Les Paul was born!

    • @averydallaire3458
      @averydallaire3458 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheGuitarReliquaryActually the Axcess Les Paul came before Alex Lifeson, although I’d argue that he perfected it with the heel/body carving and the peizo. Neal Schon has a black Les Paul with a Floyd in it that he used to record the solo for Who’s Crying Now, which came out well before Lifeson’s axcess. I think Joe Perry’s Axcess came before Lifeson’s also.

    From this video alone the sound is very very close, there must be some differences in feel.
    In the end, Gibson is for people who can splurge the cash,
    For everyone else and epi should be close enough

    I'm sorry I don't hear a 5k difference.
    Been struggling with the same issue with a PIA. I'm thinking if you threw a couple Utopia pick-ups in a ibanez rg550, it may save a lot of money. Love the finish. But is it worth a few grand more? I'm not so sure.
    Hopefully the quality of the Gibson is superior. If not we are paying to much for a name.
    I put emg 81&85 in an Epiphone Les Paul 20 years ago. To save money on Zakk Wylde's Gibson. And now his guitars are made in Korea.

      No need for an apology, I quite agree with you! I told my wife I liked the neck pickup of the Epiphone better but the middle on the R40. My philosophy has always been that you can get an amazing-sounding guitar at any price point but with increased cost comes better QC and the greater likelihood you don’t get a dud!

    The Gibson is worth it Just for the genuine open book headstock with the Gibson logo and the epiphone does not have the right headstock break angle. You can tell its a genuine Gibson from all the glue lines on the head stock from the "Break" angle. Definitely worth $5000. Also the tuning stability is an issue! Who wants there guitar to satay in tune threw an entire song that just sounds boring. And the most important thing is the Gibson holds it value, some day Troggly will give you $35,000 for it if you never play it or upgrade it with other than genuine Gibson custom shop parts denoted in the serial number...... get the fucking Epiphone or your an asshole.
