Hey nice first print. Here's some tips for you. 1) It's worth printing at 0.8 or lower for small display pieces it takes longer, but for display I 100% recommend it. 2) The flex on the second one had nothing to do with how long after it came off the bed. PLA can be thermoformed over and over again. It was already thermoformed at least twice in it's lifetime, once to make it into a spool, and once when you printed with it. I don't know why it went flexible like that, but I'm confident it wasn't due to having been off the bed so long. As a guess I'd say you might have used the hot air gun for too long and it micro stretched in some places. 3) Buy some wood-filler and sandpaper for smoothing. RUclips the technique. It's a water based filler so not toxic and only 1 part so nothing to mix. 4) Spray paint is the best friend of us 3D printers. Lots of metallic colours to choose from even in rattle cans. 5) You could have used a piece of filament as the hinge. STL's with hinge systems are usually built to accommodate 1.75mm thick hinges for this reason :) 6) Heating up a piece of metal and welding two plastic parts together is an alternative option to hot glue. It's more fiddly, but much stronger. This welding could have been used to keep a filament hinge in place too. Just a dot weld on each side of the PLA bar. It's also worth buying a 3D printing pen just for welding parts together. Welcome to 3D printing. Can't wait to see what other Harry Potter stuff you print :)
I also personally find that using a hair dryer with low, medium, and high settings. It's so much easier to control the heat and little risk of over heating and melting the project by accident.
Just a word of advice to everyone: be careful with solvents to remove glue residue!! Stuff like nail polisher remover (acetone) and 96º alcohol can literally melt (slightly) some plastics, and turn them white, thus ruining them. If what you are trying to clean is glass there is no problem, but try the stuff first on a small corner before extending over a great area in the case of plastics. Danny, you will make me do good on my intention of buying a 3D printer. I wanted it for miniatures, but I see it will have some other uses as well... :D Love the project, great job!
I am desperate for someone to make one of these and have it floating by using the opposing magnets technique so that it actually floats and can move. It would take some working out and balancing but would be so cool!
Not sure if this helps any but Cyanoacrylate, or Superglue works great for 3d printer plastics. I sand any rough parts with 120-grit sandpaper and work my way up. The higher the grit number, the finer the sandpaper. Use circular motions to avoid visible scratches. For painting, I would start with a spray primer, 2 light coats. Then chrome or metallic semi-gloss or gloss (depending on the effect you wish to achieve) paint. Spray paint will prevent blobs of paint, especially in tight areas. You just have to make sure you use light rapid strokes (I do this at a distance) to prevent blobs. If acrylic paint is to be used, I would seal it with a semi-gloss or gloss spray paint. I cannot see how large the ball is nor the hinge. But you might want to look into Precision pivot pins. A flanged cotter pin might work well for this. Or another type of pivot pin. There are many types. Great project btw. :)
Amazing 🙂 honestly this golden snitch could be a perfect box for the ring, for someone who wants to propose to a harry potter fan 😍 i would love it for sure ❤️
Hey Danny!!! First, somehow I didn’t know you had a RUclips channel! I’ve been amazed with your creations for The Wizarding Trunk!! This golden snitch is so cool!!! I love it!!! I might have to ask my husband to make me one at work haha
Hi Danny, I’ve just bought an Ender 3 3D printer, so I’m going to try this Snitch DIY. Thank you so much for the Files link and a great tutorial. As a complete newbie to 3D printing, I’m just figuring things out, so this will be a great first project 🤓
Howdy mate, nice work, but say the download link to the body of the snitch redirects to a file not found, anyway you could provide the file or a new link
Awesome job as per usual, Danny! Maybe I can help out with a little tip from my prop making cosplay times to deal with the printing structure: Use a thicker layer of black gesso and sand it down with fine sandpaper. This way you can get rid of the structure almost completely and it's the perfect base for any metallic paint. Also I can recommend spray paint for the look you aimed for. There are several very shiny spray paints out there. (plus you can age it with the acrylic paints you have at hand and make it even more realistic)
Could you make non exclusive book covers with a worn/old look for the English books sold worldwide? I wouldn't go looking for an American version but would love to have your covers for my English copies. Also, I love how the snitch has turned out. Wouldn't a glossy varnish help make the wings shiny or would that look bad?
Might I recommend watching uncle Jessie on RUclips for tips and tricks for 3D printers, he has some helpful insight☺️ This snitch looks so cool though especially after putting the gold marker on it, really made it look more metallic
Hey Danny, i wanted to ask you if i can make a intro video from your printables ? Like the one you used to make during Muggle magic time !! Will it be considered as copyright infringement, if i give credits and your channel link ???
@@Debabrata_Acharya oh, lol - sorry. I don't think I quite understand what you mean... You want to make an intro that includes some of my templates in the video? Sure - that's totally fine!
Danny do you have experience with 3D printers or did you have to self-teach yourself how to use it? I asked because I've been wanting to invest in one for some time but I've never used one before and I'm worried about putting down that amount of money for something that I may end up not using because of ignorance.
That all depends on what material you use to print. the PLA I used is safe and does not require ventilation or protective gear. You may be thinking of a different filament or a resin printer.

Thanks for all the tips! They will definitely help! Side note - I printed this at 0.2

Oh good point about the rubbing alcohol! I wasn't even thinking of anything but glass... haha
.
And never use goof off. It will melt basically any common use plastic and remove any finish.... any...

Looks so sick! Just like the replica but homemade! Keep up the great work mate
Thanks!

Oh man! That turned out nicely! How about a complete 3D print ball set? With a wooden trunk to put them in?
Fantastic vid, thanks Danny.
That would be so cool!
I use lemon essential oil to remove sticky labels and leftover glue. Works well, doesn't melt anything and smells a whole lot better.
Very cool! You could try making HP coins, a basilisks tooth (and u can make a diary), Rowena’s diadem, Helgas cup or a the ring... have fun!
You should use gold rubbing powder on top of the gold paint. It's used on nails.
It still looks awesome though. Great job!!!!
Oh cool, thanks. I'll look into that.
Your Golden Snitch turned out so nice!
Amazing 🙂 honestly this golden snitch could be a perfect box for the ring, for someone who wants to propose to a harry potter fan 😍 i would love it for sure ❤️
With some acetone and a sealed container, ive notices some people are able to smooth out the ridges on 3d printed objects
The acetone doesn't work on PLA, apparently.
Try gold and silver leaf next time. Ive had good success with my snitches.

Amazing video! I would die for a diy on luna's glasses!
This is so cool! It would also be awesome to see you make some 3D book embellishments for a super fancy wizard tome. 📖

COOL video-I got that same snitch a couple years ago that opens up. I really like it, it was also 3D printed. Mine slides open to place a ring in it.

Maybe try some chrome nail polish?
I absolutely LOVE this!!!!!
Make a hand of glory with wires and masking tape and paint
I do have the hand of glory planned out - but I'll be using different materials.
Could u make one without a 3D printer please?
Also watch Frankly Built for some 3D instructions. Especially on sanding and finishing.
Looks Amazing!
Love it!!! It looks great!!
Very cool !!!
Please make the advanced potion making book with real readable pages
Danny, use Tester paints, used for plastic modelers, and you don't need a base coat
Awesome, I'll check that out. Thanks!
I wish I had a 3D printer. If I did I’d so make this!
Yeah me too... unfortunately I have no money and no space to put
Hey could you try and make a 3D printed Supernatural 1836 colt. I did find some free online

Who just wants to have it
UV resin might fill them better

If you intend to make a DIY video on your channel using my templates, I'm going to have to say no. Create your own templates.
@@wizardryworkshop 😂😂no, no, no.
I mean a intro. Like just display.
Not diy. You got me wrong.
@@Debabrata_Acharya oh, lol - sorry. I don't think I quite understand what you mean... You want to make an intro that includes some of my templates in the video? Sure - that's totally fine!
So underrated
Hey Danny, please make Dumbledore Phoenix (Fawke) from Harry Potter or Fantastic Beast; Crime Of Grindelwald
The only silver marker I know of that will give you a reflective finish is Molotow Liquid Chrome. It's pricy though :/
hinged snitch is no longer on thingiverse

I am self-taught (and still learning) through RUclips videos. I will say, the first few days take a lot of patience.
@@wizardryworkshop fair enough :) TY for the response :)
I printed this… didn’t turn out right. It’s too flat. Any suggestions?
The wings? I showed how to bend them in the video.
great
So cool! Keep it up! See you at 70K!!
So close!
@@wizardryworkshop, well here's one more for you. Looking forward to watching you grow.
Chrome or metallic nail powders would look better than paints
Me too
Oh my god can't wait
Some public libraries have 3d printers and teach class. These need to be vented and wear protective gear.
That all depends on what material you use to print. the PLA I used is safe and does not require ventilation or protective gear. You may be thinking of a different filament or a resin printer.
Does your 3D printer print clear? If it does, try printing a clear stand for the Snitch. :)
The filament used would determine the color. But I've seen clear filament and it comes out cloudy, not fully transparent.
@@wizardryworkshop Ah...DANG! It looked awesome! I can't wait to see more!
Sing it with me: 'I see a red door and I want to _____ __ _____.'
Oh my god ❤️
If you ever do this again I recommend you invest in an airbrush
Already did after this video! Lol
It seems like I have seen this before. It's wiered
Spray paint ;-)
What Hogwarts house are you?
Hufflepuff
@@wizardryworkshop Same!💛

3d printing is so not diy.. let alone one you didnt model yourself
