- Watchmaking Vlog Episode 20 - Documenting making my first watch using hand and manual machinery.
In this watchmaking episode I unveil the parcel that has arrived from watch material supply house. Inside a bunch of goodies, and the second wheel jewel that I will use to replace the original centre wheel jewel of the ETA 6498. I use new Seitz reamers, and they are fantastic.
I fit the new jewel in the watch, and test the wheels for engagement. Watchmaking at it’s finest.
I hope you enjoyed this episode, and I look forward to seeing you in the next watchmaking vlog.
Thanks for watching, happy watchmaking.

Really good video! Thank you very much for taking us on your journey!
Thanks for watching and commenting Lana 😁
This is the best project on RUclips rn
Wow! Thank you, that’s a huge compliment! 🙏🙏😁
love the music!
Hahaha cheers
Really like this format. It's not too short and makes me can't wait for the next one. I'm also interested in knowing the names of all parts and tools you use so if you could share that a bit more. But the concept you use for making videos now is a good one I think. Awesome progress again, keep up the good work Dean.
Thanks for the feedback Maikel! Good to hear I will try be a bit more informative in future videos 👍🏼👍🏼😁
Thank you for great content. I`m a second year Watchmaking student in Finland and I really like to follow your progress
That’s awesome, I wish you all the success with your studies and career 👍🏼 thank you 🙏
Really like your format. Not too long, nor too much talk and to the point. Maybe a bit more details about the manufacturing process. Did you buy the wheels, or make them? What is the white chalky stuff you use on your files? Saw you use them in the previous episode. I assume its for cleaning the files. Vallorbe files, right?
Thanks. Keep up the good work
Thanks for you comment, really appreciate the feedback! Yes, so I’m currently making bridges of my own design using an existing ETA 6498 movement. So for this watch I’m not making the wheels. The white block is exactly that chalk, it helps the file not get clogged especially on softer materials such as brass! And yes vallorbe also F.dick which is a German brand 😁😁
Thanks for that info Skir! I had no idea, I do keep my files stored in tool chest, and try not let them touch..haha I’m a bit pedantic about my files.. I will keep that in mind 👍🏼 . Yes aluminium is sooooo bad. I just use cheap ones if I ever have to file aluminium which thankfully hasn’t been many times 😁
@@DeanDK - if it were gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) , that would be right - if you're using the Cousins French Chalk block (magnesium silicate) then the hygroscopic and rusting issue shouldn't arise in the same way. There is unfortunately a lot of confusion and re-use of the word "Chalk" for different, but visually similar, materials..... Gypsum is used in Blackboard chalk, which would be problematic in the way @Skir warns.
windsoruk thanks for that, I am glad I’m using French chalk 😁
Very nice work! Looks like you got the uprightness of the wheels spot on.
Thanks Karl, I'm really stoked 😀 also thank you so much, you have been on this journey of making this watch from the very beginning always offering advice. I really appreciate it, and look forward to the future
You are doing great Dean, always interesting videos, keep on posting "thanks"
Thanks Bill 😊you’re very kind watching and commenting all my videos!
Man I'm happy for you like if I'm making it my self , I really have the feeling you are going to achieve it
Thanks so much chouaib, really appreciate, it's so motivating to hear that. 😊
A mint will use the same wood for high relief coins to get a perfect finish good job
That’s awesome to know, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Appreciate you taking your time to watch my video and comment 🙏🏼😁
Good work!
Cheers 🍻
Heads up, Guilloche is pronounced "gii-yosh" for next time :)
Awesome channel, love seeing your progress updates!
Thanks Matt, I will pronounce it properly next time for sure 👍🏼 thank you for watching and commenting 😁😁
Dean don't worry about your editing to much, i think people just like watching your journey i know i do it's an awesome hobby you are doing just fine. Kaz
Thanks for you feedback Kaz! Appreciate that, I do want to spend less time editing to maximise my working hours. 😁😁👍🏼
Bedzie Pieczęć Genewska? :-)
It's easy to buy from Cousins but try and talk to someone on the phone with any knowledge or try to return something, 3/4s past useless.
😬 I haven’t had to deal with them passed their sales.
We like boxes. We know this place Patrick always shares that he gets good things on deals there, I will share this instagram watchmaker guy obr_hology see if he knows of him if not we will follow. We love your work it is fine we see good things from you, we enjoy it here. Lance for Lance & Patrick.
They are the best feeling opening them each time 😂 nice 👍🏼 he is doing great stuff. Thanks you guys are awesome 😁
CousinsUK are great until you need information from them or need to return an item or recieve the wrong one. Buying from them is easy in my experience, everything else, not so much.
Ditto.
Someone else had mentioned this as well Karl. I wasn't aware as I haven't had any issues like that so far, that's a little unfortunate to hear.
Dean. Keep it up. Nice work. Amazing to see something made from stock. Look forward to seeing more. Thanks again!
Thank you John, I’m glad you are liking the videos I’m making 😁 its make everything seem worthwhile 👍🏼
Dean, I have been following your channel for couple of weeks now. Hats off. You inspire me. I need a quick piece of advice from you. I just completed George Daniels' book and Basics of involute gear. Now it's time to hands on. Could you please suggest which Lathe should I purchase or where do I practically start. I am from India, and it's hard to find a mentor here. I am searching to get started.
Thanks for your comment Bikash, it’s tough out there, I first started buying used lathe form eBay. I think if you are first starting out you can’t go too wrong with the sincere watchmaker lathe from China 👍🏼
@@DeanDK thanks for the prompt response. Could you please share the model number and make, so that I can save to buy one. Also, what do I start with first, as I just completed the theory.
Great video Dean!
Thanks John 😀👍
Hi Dean,
What video shows how did you cut the (ponion) wheels?
Lukas
Hi Lukas , for my first watch I am using ETA 6498 movement, and making my own bridges.
Very nice, you are really making good progress in the last weeks! To be honest, I didn´t really notice the last videos being "less polished". It´s the watchmaking that counts for me.
Thanks so much for the feedback! 😁😁
Insane, dude. Congrats! Really coming together now. New format sounds good. Love the current format but I feel the new format would actually result in more content and more insight.
Thanks for watching and your feedback Mike, 😊
never say sorry. you are doing a lot
😁 thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Robert
Dude, I'm not a watch maker, but enjoy engineering and like your format. A real bonus for me is the enthusiasm you show when things go well and the disappointment, when things don't go so well. It makes the vlog more personal and I feel is better for connecting with the audience. From my perspective, please don't cut out your emotional journey in favour of a logical/educational format as I think this would detract from your presentation. Keep it up and well done!
Thanks for your feedback Steve, I really appreciate it and feel that, the path of sharing the emotions is what I wish to pursue more. More documenting. Thanks 🙏👍🏼😁
Super Dean!
Cheers Aldo! 😀😊
This tree my mom have in their garden in Poland :D so not only on Switzerland :D And not only this tree my be used.
Hi Dean wondered if you could help me with my Seitz jewelling tool at each side on the vernier gauge markers they seem to be stuck at the bottom as are yours are these supposed tobe sprung so they move up and down as one twists the hight adjustment up or down regards from the UK
Amazing! You said "all the way from the UK" I think. Where are you based? You seem to have an English? accent?
Thanks David 🙏 I’m based in Australia
@@DeanDK Awesome! I love it there. I'll be coming again in August this year. Would love to meet you and talk watchmaking! I have a pretty huge selection of parts and tools, btw.... and always looking for new connections. I'll be in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.
That’s awesome to hear Dave!! I would be more than happy to meet and talk 😁 if you have Instagram or Facebook just send me a DM 👍🏼
@@DeanDK PM sent on facebook....
You're doing a great job mate .. The music and stuff is just "colour" I like seeing you work and explain .. I understand everything, Maybe thats cos im an Aussie too hahaha
Hahah cheers man thanks so much for your comment, really appreciate it. I’m currently overseas at the moment, but the videos will be back in a around 3 weeks 😁😁
I love it! the progress is amazing. I do have to ask. did you make your own gears and pinions? if so, it would be great to see how you did yours. thank you again for the great content
Hi Paola, for this watch I didn't make the gears. It is something that I am going to do, as I progress I want to make more more pieces by hand until I have made an entire watch 😀
Boom.........Progress. Happy days!
Haha cheers man 😁
Great video, keep going please
Thanks for the support I will 😁
I was curious what kind of files you’re using. I noticed the needle files, but what are the really thin ones called? Didn’t know if they had a certain name and where you get them from. Btw, I think the filming, editing and uploads are spot on. The music in this video is great too.
Yes you are spot on, they are needle files. They come in different shapes, if you look up Vallorbe needle file set you can see them all. Each shape has a unique name too. Thanks so much 🙏 I was a bit tongue in cheek in this video saying the music everybody loves, because I usually get negative feedback 🤣😂
Dean DK lol, that’s awesome. Thanks for the reference too, I’ll check out the files. Filing is not as easy as it seems, one wrong move and you have to start over. I used to be a locksmith, that’s why I have major respect for what you’re doing.
Haha yup it’s so true! Locksmith - that’s very cool 😎 thanks man 😁
It's looking good!
Thanks man 😁
