We played a cover of this song (by Kristian Meurman, more rock/metal style) when we buried my father's ashes. I love this song, but can't help but feel sad every time I hear it. I've been really enjoying you react to so many different kind of Finnish songs, not just the most popular and typical ones. Can't wait what other songs you find!

This song is used a lot at funerals. I myself chose this for my brother's blessing occasion. Petri Laaksonen has also made Gospel songs and of course the Eurovision songs.

Moi Mauro! This indeed is very beautiful and emotional song ❤
The singer, Petri Laaksonen has good voice and clear pronounciation.
By the way, Laaksonen has composed 2 Eurovision song contest songs:
Eläköön elämä (1985, performed by Sonja Lumme, 9th place) and
Sata salamaa (1987, performed by Vicki Rosti, 15th place).
    Terkut Suomesta! 🇫🇮

"Täällä Pohjantähden Alla" is also the title of a very famous book in Finland by Väinö Linna, who also made the book "Tuntematon Sotilas" (The Unknown Soldier) which has several movies made about it, the most recent being... not too long ago. It is actually a prequel (sort of) for Tuntematon Sotilas, since it tells the tale and history of some of the characters in the latter book.

The metaphor of Finns living "under the North Star" is actually quite old. In 1863, a religious poem was published and turned into a song that began with the words:
    Here under the North Star
    is now our homeland,
    But beyond the stars
    we'll have another home.

As you mentioned the weddings. Not really a weddings song that one. But coincidentally there's a wedding waltz "Akselin ja Elinan häävalssi" composed for the movie "Täällä Pohjantähden alla" - which is the central theme of the movie and a popular choice for weddings.

Love this song❤ honestly tear up. The Northern Star is important to me, until I was 6 years old I wanted to believe that grandma is the Northern Star that protects me every time I see it. I still believe that even today, even though I am now 27 years old

I mean… while the civil war is an important and impactful part of Täällä Pohjantähden alla (not alla pohjantähden, where did you get that name from?), it is not what it is about. Considering that the story starts in the mid 1880s and ends in the 1950s that would be impossible.

I knew this was based the poem came from 1800s, but the hymn what I understood from my late grandma told me is that the melody is much, much older. Because during the Sweden's rule it was forbidden to sing Finnish in churches, so all they can do is hymn in Finnish.
