  • jRin.net shows you how to dismantle and upgrade the latest Dell Mini 10v, the 1018. (use this video to learn how to upgrade the memory).
For memory upgrade purposes, note that it is slightly different than the Mini 1012 in that there is no (removable) memory access door under the keyboard to access the memory slot - you need to take off the palm rest to access it!
Also, please be sure to know what Dell Mini 10 series netbook you have prior to following this video as there are currently 4 different ones.
    * Dell Mini 10 (1010) which is easily identifiable as it is the only one that has a HDMI port. This is the only Dell Mini 10 series that cannot have it's memory upgraded.
    * Dell Mini 10v 1011 -- similar look (body style) to the Mini 10 except that it has a different atom processor (n270, n280) and has VGA instead of HDMI.
    * Dell Mini 10v 1012 -- has a new hinge design compared to the Mini 1011/1010 and the bottom half is all white, no longer has the huge extended battery that sticks out below the netbook, and has a refresh in specs (atom N450+ processor)
    * Dell Mini 10v 1018 -- the latest iteration, the one in this video, that is basically the same look as the 1012 but with an all black bottom, a few less ports, upgrade to ddr3 memory, and FINALLY a touchpad with dedicated buttons!
Be sure to check out www.jrin.net/20... for the full guide!

i cant believe dell made it even more annoying to get to the RAM. this has to be the worst access to RAM design I have ever seen and I have replaced/upgraded 1000's of laptops and desktops. unbelievable.

on many things yes, you will notice faster loading, and less momentary freeze up moments. For a tiny netbook like this, 2gb is perfect so that limitation is not that big of a deal. I only use mine for web browsing, and the 2gb of ram with chrome works great and is not noticeably faster than a real laptop for that task. Without upgrading to 2gb, chrome may have issues with video playback, like frame drops every 15-30 seconds due to swapping, but with 2gb, video playback is smooth.

if you're referring to articles such as wikipedia on the dell mini model names, you're correct - however, back when they were actively being sold, most were referenced as the Mini 10v

@MCdrivein No, usually if you can disassemble a laptop without having to go through one of the "warranty void if tampered" stickers that covers a screw, you are ok.

what what a pita! i got mine upgraded, but with some difficulty. if you're gonna attempt this, make sure your machine is shutdown and not just in hibernate. also, be extra careful @ 1:05; i broke the clip, and had to crazy glue it. i also stabbed the motherboard, but luckily it was ok. i got fat fingers, so the process was tricky.

Dell does not have any official drivers for the 1080 and windows xp (though, you should be able to use the ones for earlier models such as the 1012). Also, this netbook can only support up to 2GB max (it's a physical limitation of the chipset).

Thanks for the info. My 1018 has been sitting because it’s still slow with the 2gb upgrade. Was about to add more RAM until I read your comment about the chipset limits. Just gonna upgrade to SSD and see if that helps. Thanks.

i have two quick questions. i currently have two gigs of ram in my 1018(thanks to this video i was able to install it easy) but how much of a performance boost would i get if i decided to put a 4 gig stick in. i heard from a few sources that based on the system it's self that there wouldn't be much or any noticeable difference in performance, is that true?
i heard from another source that it may be a good idea to put windows xp or Linux on the netbook because it is less taxing to the system.

  • @TwistyTrav

Do you think it would be possible to make a 1012/1018 hybrid, since they are so similar? I hate the 1012 touch pad. It is terrible for two fingers, but the 1018 touch pad is great. Plus, I have the broadcom chip on my 1012, which isn't in the 1018. Most of the hardware is interchangeable, and the cutouts all match up, with the exception of the RAM chip door.

Are you sure it only supports 2GB of RAM? I checked in Linux and it says
    Handle 0x0012, DMI type 16, 15 bytes
    Physical Memory Array
    Location: System Board Or Motherboard
    Use: System Memory
    Error Correction Type: None
    Maximum Capacity: 8 GB
    Number Of Devices: 1
There's a "Maximum capacity" entry there.
Also, in the video you're saying something about an "accelerator card". Is there a way to improve the graphics features of the laptop? Can I add a graphics accelerator to it?
