Ahh I want this Mac too. It’s soo stylish
M2 MBA looks great, but disappointed about the SSD speeds on base model :(
Ahh, Apple making you pay for everything. It’s ironic how the m1 was one of the best, and the m2 just made a disappointment out of the m1.
Thank you for the update.
Man, this laptop looks great but I feel like the previous M1 generation set a solid benchmark and won’t be forgotten fast. In my opinion the M1’s will be considered the peak of how laptops should be.
The fact that the good M2 is way more expensive than the base M1 just proves that the M1 is way too valuable to pass up
Including Apple no company still can't beat M1 laptops success
@@perseus31 Haha, exactly 😂
Totally agree. 😃
Price to performance (value for money) nothing can beat M1 line of MacBook.
The price really kills its appeal. At 1500 you’d have paid handsomely for the performance that the base model *should* have, but then after paying a premium for performance you’re left way too close to the MBP 14 to be comfortable with the M2 Air. M1’s still the peace of mind choice.
Do not reply to this fake reply. It’s a scam I fell for it myself.
I think the M1 Air raised the bar way too high and there were some high expectations for M2 but it's mostly a design refresh. The M1 still feels like the best bang for buck if design is not a consideration.
The wedge is the better design. I've used both.
@@savedfaves facts
I really enjoy this YT channel. Good quality and informative. I'm keeping myself updated on Apple releases through this channel alone. Keep up the good work, Max!
It is such a pity that a chip like the M2 is capped by seemingly “non-accidental” design mistakes. In particular the single chip SSD is really sad. Excellent video!
Yep, it's just not worth that extra money over the M1
Apple just manufactured a problem to be solved in the next generation. That's classic Apple, they are bullies.
They definitely learned their lesson with the M1 and how good it was for the price. It sucks that you get the double whammy of the price increase combined with the base SSD and thermal regulation.
I think they went a bit too far and this will hurt them after initial hype dies down. The M2 air will not be an easy recommendation like the M1 was at $999 or less.
man, i was feeling the m2 design and was ready to dish out 1200, but I can't after getting to know the performance downgrade. Not in the market to spend 1600 as well so i guess ill go for the m1. Why did apple have to do that :(
Loving the comparison videos and thank you for all the hardwork that you guys put in :)
Definitely agree that I like the new shape of the M2 air over the M1 version. Really sad they messed up the SSD situation so bad.
i think they learned that people were buying the m1 air instead of the mbp.. so it makes sense that this time they nerfed the air
That’s only true for the 8gb memory, which I honestly don’t think anybody who considers themselves as a power user should be getting anyways.
Definitely my "base model" starts at 1,599 with 16GB and 512GB of SSD, it's just inexcusable the gap of performance with 256 GB model! And by the way, the midnight color it's just stunning.
i have a m1 16 gb, 1 tb macbook air, i was considering upgrading but given the reviews and situation am not that convinced anymore. When i bought mine the pro series was not even available and i paid over 1800$ for it. If it was today? i would probably buy the 14 inches pro and thats it.
You can get the 14" MBP as of today for 1699, yikes.
@@mannylupercio8194 can you share a link to that?
@@eyesc Definitely, no question about it, unless you really want the smaller size. It has a better display and better cooling
@@rcadelina I get a better deal because I have the membership but it should be 1750 for everyone else.
Thank you for the review. Mine arrives Friday. Can't wait!
Congrats on the million!
I would now like to take the time to thank you for all the videos you have been pumping out, I can’t believe you hadn’t hit 1M yet!
Hey, great video; what do you think of only upgrading the ram to 16GB instead of 8GB but keeping the 256GB. Can I expect a boost in performance too?
You all are doing truly astounding position. I truly love to watch your recordings cause, I'm interested to find out about the innovation that update regular. So thank you Max Tech for refreshing us and for the MacBook M1 give way.
Good luck on reaching 100,000. I’ve been watching you guys for years. Appreciate it
Thank you Max and the team! always love your guy's videos, ❤
They are very clear, loaded with tons of helpful information based on actual testing, while still spot on for the topic that people want to know! 🔥
Keep up the superb work! 🚀🚀🚀
The amount of effort and time to put these reviews are second to none on RUclips community. Keep it up!
Thank you for explaining the pros and cons of computers in such detail
Thank you for going deep and pointing out the cooling issues!
You deserve several million subscribers! These reviews go far & beyond any other, an honest appraisal with a deep dive on real wide use and tons of tech to back it all up, love the heat dissipation discovery, just goes to show the corners Apple cutting, everyone is going to be copying this diy performance upgrade & Apple is sure to notice, Thanks for keeping it real..
I ordered the 512/16 model, and I must say that the choice between this model and the 14 inch model was hard to make. But taking into account the discounts available to me at the time of purchase, the price difference was still around 400 USD, and I was not willing to spend that money for a not much bigger screen and extra performances that I don’t think I will need. I hope I made the right choice, but I am sure that I will be impressed anyways, as I will be transitioning from a late 2016 Intel MBP.
the extra 400 does mean that you don't need ro spend money on a dongle, u get 120hz screen and higher brightness, better speakers if that matters, fans that protect the better m1 pro chip that will last u way longer
@@pablopan4940 true, but I already have the dongles (which I almost never use). My laptop is connected 99% of the time to my 32” USB-C display (I usually use only one port), and I end up using my laptop’s display as a secondary display). I guess that it really depends on each one’s use case. Before, I had a double external display setup, which would have removed the MBA from the equation.
You made the 1M. congrats Max. Love the review, i bought my M2 this week. Thanks again for the review.
Love the nuanced reviews with details about the NAND configuration. Almost no one else talks about this and it’s so important when deciding what to buy!
It's amazing how far Macs have gone. That much performance per watts in a chassis like that was unthinkable a few years ago
I love this review. You can see all the work from this week in it, and it's fair. I'm still tempted by the M2 as a lite computer, but I'm torn on the specs vs cost. Having played with on in store, I really dig the shape and MagSafe return. Your 8 v 10 core video might be the ticket. Am tempted, and we'll see what the budget allows/shipping doom. Thank you again!!
Same here. Digging the design & weight 😮
Interesting to see such a detailed review with no bias and high quality content as always from your channel
Thanks for your reviews, love your channel
Thank you for the great video explaining everything. Could you please make another video going into detail about the 512GB /16GB RAM M2 Air VS the base 14" M1 Pro? Is it worth the extra couple hundred dollars? Is the M1 Pro more "future proof" even though it is older? Thanks!
Love the new design. What I don’t understand is that big performance gap between the base model and the higher spec one. Makes no sense. Maybe solved in the future via any software update?
It's not really a performance gap. Video encoding speed is dependent on memory and storage write speed. In this test, he saturates the memory with other tasks on the base model, such that it simultaneously has to rely on its slow storage for both SWAP and video encoding. It's only applicable in this scenario
What not to understand? Apple is greedy and wants you to spend more money
thanks for the reivew!! really helpful
Love your guys work. Just recently discovered the channel, but is always one of my favorites.
I absolutely love how connective the MacBook is with
other apple devices and I am researching MacBooks
for university coming up in the fall. The pros a bit too
expensive and I don't need that big of a laptop,
looking something smaller, but still perform incredibly
well for the price and size.
i love the design and colour of M2 Air..but seeing all the differences and comparison with M1 Air, made me hold the thoughts of having one especially with the price jumps
Thank you guys for putting so much efforts in your videos and giving us priceless information.
I like this style of testing on devices much better because it gives an idea of how the device can be developed day by day with clearer examples. I hope they keep bringing this Cosme of videos because they help a lot. Peace.
I am glad I went for the M1 Air a year ago. The new design is super nice, but I believe Apple shouldn't increase the amount of cores on the Air. They had a nice balance for a fanless design with the previous generation. I guess they'll figure it out again with the next gen processor, using the 3nm process (sure hope so, at least). Keep it up with the testing. Great content, guys!
Amazing job as always guys!
I see so much potential wasted in the base model, and as you've correctly pointed out, once you start to improve, you can notice a dramatic impact! Now I would love to see what will be the M2 generation on the MBP family... those will get a killer speed increase!
Interested to find out how it does against other machines. I’m leaning towards the 14 in, so this helps a lot.
Really love the in depth reviews
I'm amazed with the new m2 macbook air, love the new sleek design and the larger screen not to mention the color matched magsafe charger.
It’s so close to being the perfect laptop, if they could have kept the M2 16/512 model in the $1400 ballpark it would be a no brainer, really unfortunate to have to pay nearly pro level prices to get the full benefit. Really hoping for a M1 vs M2 comparison with both having the 16/512 configurations in place.
Best of luck hitting 1M!
you can get these specs for 1400 in hong kong
Absolutely hit the nail on the head.
@@Aprightioulous Yo-I'm moving.
Good point. The 14 MBP is only 1,800 if you look around for deals. I got a 6 month old and lightly used second hand 14 for only 1,500.
I started to consider the M2 pro even I'm a big fan of the Air lineup...
From development standpoint, should i take the M2s into consideration at all? Or just play on the safe side with pro model or even studio?
I bought a 13 inch M2 MacBook Air about 4 weeks ago. I opted for 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Before buying I agonized over whether to get the Air or the 14 inch pro. In the end, I chose the Air because of the lighter weight. I carry this computer with me everywhere and I love that it weighs under 3 pounds. So far, performance has been great for the things I do. I love this little computer.
M1 Air was meant to show the potential of arm on Macs, which it did while being a great value for money product.
But now when apple has shown the potential of the chip they would very much like to push you towards the pro models as they did in the older intel days.
Beware of this fake response. It’s not from max tech but from scammers. I fell for it myself.
The whole series of M2 MBA videos have been excellent. Thanks for all the investigation and sharing your finding with us all. I expect Apple to work harder on the next HW offerings after this embarrassment and although it won’t help us now, let’s hope for the future!
I just love your reviews because you just clear the whole thing in our minds
Congrats on 1M Subscribers Max!
Another great review, Max and Vadim. Initially there were lots of naysayers criticizing you for focusing too much on the ssd speeds, but at this point it seems like they all came along to the same conclusion. Apple messed that up and kudos to you for discovering it and giving it the attention it deserves.
It’s amazing how detailed the reviews you give are. Definitely prefer the new design of the new MBA, but Apple should have set the base model as 16GB with 512GB ssd, with that price point. Keep up the amazing videos!
Great video. Thanks for being so thorough
Max, you deserve 2m subscribers, congrats for your huge milestone in youtube!
Its hard to improve over the M1, when the M2 is still on the same process node. They had to do something performancewise and that comes at a cost. Still with the new design, the M2 will just sell like cake
Thanks for this video! I’m pretty disappointed that Apple cheaped out on it’s SSD, especially since they already cheaped out on the amount of storage the base model has. I’m assuming that Apple gave this device (somewhat) inadequate cooling for sustained workloads to help differentiate it from their Pro devices. Although it still seems like one of the best ultrabooks in 2022, and will probably stay that way!
I have two point to say as a yearly non Apple users: 128gb ssd modules are becoming rare and useless because too small, so Apple had to use one 256gb (they spent less to built a pc but it's secondary in this situation); the temperature is "normal" that in a very thin fanless laptop with a great power like full unlocked m2 will raise if used in hard works, but this is because the cpu is very powerful for a fanless and even the 'pro" 13 m2 with his fans have practically the same temperatures of new air. Air m1 had better dissipation because the m1 is less powerful than m2 and because the laptop was larger, m2 air is thinner and more powerful than "old" gen. This would not be a full defense of the Apple product but I would like to buy one macbook air and leave Windows
Thanks for the honest review @Max Tech
Love these videos. Keep up the great work!!!
I love the MBA M1 for its good performance and fan less design. The upgrade to the better M2 version is certainly mandatory but I am curious about its heat management. Thanx for this good review!
Love the design of the latest MacBook Air!
If I was getting one I’d definitely bump up to the 512gb variant.
Been watching the videos for awhile and didn’t even notice the giveaway until you posted on the channel. Thanks for making great content!
I’ll be looking for a replacement for our 2012 MacBook Air soon. I’d be really interested to know how much difference between 8GB and 16GB RAM on the 512 SSD is.
Me too, but if your getting the upgraded model it already comes with both 16gb RAM and 512 SSD
Seems like you keep your computer for a long time. If I was in your place, I would get the 16GB model. On the other hand, for $100 more you can get the 14in at Best Buy. It's a much better laptop, unless you want a fanless and light laptop.
Starting university this fall in computer graphics. Was very attracted by m2 air at launch. But don’t feel like it’s worth it now, will definitely go for 14” m1 pro MacBook pro. Thanks Maxtech, for exposing the performance issues, because of this I am able to make the right choice for my MacBook.
Became subscribed recently, and I'm loving this real world reviews! It's all we need to know, before buying a new product! Thanks!
This Review is great. You helped me decide on an iMac. I appreciate your work!
I bought the M2 with 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. So far, so good!
It's the best choise!!!!
Would like to see an M2 Air 256gb/16gb vs M2 Air 512gb/8gb!
I personally went for a Starlight M2 Air 256gb/16gb as I dont need the extra space for £200 more. And I prefer the Air's form factor. It arrived with a dent in the chassis so its being replaced though. Thoroughly love the redesign!
That’s a good idea 👍
Agree!
Thanks for the review, very helpful
Love your testing videos!
Though it's not perfect, it's still a great laptop for those who wants to upgrade after Intel Mac. I'd love to move to this one to improve my work and other activities. 🙏
It would be really great if you tested a 8coreGPU/8GB ram/256GB storage version up against a 8coreGPU/8GB ram/512GB storage version, to see exactly how big an impact the crippled ssd has to the performance.
Warning. Do not reply to this fake comment. It’s not from max tech but from some scammers. I fell for it myself.
Thank you for the vide I still thinking about it. You helped me in my decision
The production quality of your videos are just chefs kiss

I wonder if the upgrade to the 512, dual dimm vs single, would be sufficient for someone in the middle. Not looking to do pro level stuff but not wanting slowdown when video editing.
Will be waiting to hear how your testing goes with the 8 vs 10 core GPU. I also find it unfortunate that Apple left such a disparity between the base and higher level MBA.
I have two active orders and the only difference is the # of GPU cores. Waiting on MaxTech’s testing so I know which order to cancel.
I like your reviews cause they are always honest. Keep going
I was sooo close to pre-ordering the M2 Air until the pricing and spooky SSD talk turned me away. Went with the M1 Pro 14" instead and it is amazing.
The M2 MacBook Air is a really nice machine, and I'd buy it if I was looking for something in that price range. I think I'll upgrade to the next gen 14" MacBook Pro when that comes out.
I’ve been looking at a MacBook for a couple months now. What do you think about the pro to the max?
Good stuff. I like your reviews. Keep educating us.
Seeing this compared to the Intel is huge, I haven’t seen that comparison made thus far in the reviews I’ve seen. Important to recognize how much the improvements have been and how most of the Apple consumer base are still using Intel chips and have yet to experience the new SOC.
Like MKBHD said in his review, Apple's pricing stragegy is just so well thought out
It's not something good to be proud of
I think the new design of the M2 Air was built to accomodate the M3 chip which, with its 3nm process, will have fewer issues with overheating while deliverying sustained heavy performance. The 'right' move from Apple would have been to release the M2 Air in the wedge-shape chassis, but then everyone would have loudly complained about the tired, mature design.
Nice video. I appreciate the comparisons as well as the real world use reviews.
It's frustrating to see apple almost actively discourage you from buying at this price ladder, especially when the pro models don't have any interesting colour choices (the starlight is REALLY unique and would fit a pro model so well!)
!!!DO NOT BELIEVE HIM IT’S A FAKE TRUST ME!!!
I think the form factor is overlooked by a lot of people. I sold my 14 inch MBP to go with the higher spec MBA specifically because of it. The 14 becomes a chore to carry around.
Was it worth it? Going back to low refresh rates? And inferior screen and speakers. Im torn between m2 air512/16 and 14’pro
14 inch isn't much heavier at all
@@zamba5619 get the 14 inch. I opted for the 16 inch and even that isn't heavy. Don't get what people are talking about when they say these are heavy, they're not
@@loughrey101 it is noticeably heavier than my 13” MBP from 2020, and the boxier design also contributes to its comparative lack of portability.
I often have to work outside with the laptop in direct sunlight, it’s a hot climate. Do you think there will be a significant difference in the level of overheating between the “midnight” color and the “silver” color? Thanks!
Thank you for showing your honest review. The sub par SSD performance of the base model really took a toll. From a portability point of view, this is my kinda laptop.
The M2 MacBook Air has a beautiful design. It's unfortunate that Apple decided to intentionally limit the performance.
apple is criminal
They have realized the mistake they made when they introduced the M1 that there wasn't really a noticeable difference in performance between the air and pro
@@itsAPC Let's buy Dell XPS instead and also buy their warranty coverage. hehehehe.
@@samirharawa9221 I don't think that's it. The unbinned Air and Pro literally start at the same price of $1299. Apple has zero monetary incentive to sell the Pro over the Air
@@thor.mukbang if you look at the M1 Macbook air and Macbook pro.. There wasn't any significant difference in performance... The difference started to show after the redesign when they brought in M1x etc... And in M2 series they want to maintain that performance bump between the redesigned Macbook air to pros.
I love how this new Air took the design philosophy of the newer MacBooks that's more squared off, but still kept the core of what makes the Air so popular.
It's a shame that the base model is underperforming and that the upgrades are so expensive. That's really the only negative that I see so far. Hopefully Apple won't make those kinds of decisions for the next generation of Apple Silicon Macs.
Thanks for this video!!!. I love this design.
i call that update and down grade , not up grade..
Great review once again!! Kudos to your team!
Do you think this is still a good laptop for an average joe or do you think the user experience wont be good?
Considering how close the price of the upgraded M2 Air is to the 14" Pro, I think the Pro has better value in terms of ports, performance, and the screen.
Defo i was waitin for m2 air but now going for 14” pro its a no brainer
The M2 Air with 512 SSD and 16 GB RAM gives big performance in a small package (especially when paired with the thermal pad mod). If you’re not on a budget, then I think it’s a great buy and will last a long time!
But why should it need the thermal pad mod... that's the question
at that point MBP 14 is within the eyesight. why don't u fork out a bit more for that 14 inch pro? huge benefit
@@User-defined331 Agreed. Unless portability is your paramount concern, the MBP is the better "value" although I use that term loosely.
The best value is still the MBA M1. It annoys me that Apple has kept the M1 in the lineup AT THE SAME PRICE. Rather than reduce the price of the outgoing model, though... Apple chose to INCREASE the cost of the incoming AND handicap it.
Thanks for the video. I was debating if I should spec it up or go with the base model.
The cover image is quite accurate. Thanks for the great video!
I need a more powerful computer to replace my old one which is currently nearly 9 years old. I want to do video editing, but mine now can't handle the task anymore.
The thing is that the M1 MacBook Air set such a great standard compared to intel macs, and the M2 is getting hate for not being as great as the M1.
The M2 is an amazing machine. It has its flaws here and there but it is a small improvement compared to the M1 with the right upgrades. It’s just that the jump from m1 from intel was massive compared to m1 to m2. Just saying.
The thing is the price really. If there is a price jump of 50% two years later it's not the same product anymore. If this came out 2 years later costing 999$ people would be like "hmm OK not a great improvement but I'll take the upgrade" .
Great overall experience and review of both laptops
