    Hi great video for us uninitiated I’ve got one of these from new unfortunately only fm works but not that well I do miss be able to listen on the SW bands the only problem being I know absolutely zilch about radios , fortunately my from new SonyICF- 7600 DS still works , regards Fred

      Hi Fred, they are a complicated set for the novice :) All I can suggest is clean those rotary turret contacts. Without the correct gear you're going to get nowhere I'm afraid. Not that there's much on MW now.

    I had one of these as a youth! First thing I had ever seen from Russia. Even then I was fascinated by the components used, very 50s looking inside. Never seen a radio with turret tuning before. It did sound good and cost very little. Had a slight hum when powered via the mains and the dial lights would modulate to the music when played loud. No idea what happened to it!

    • @Andrewausfa
      @Andrewausfa  5 лет назад

      Hi Michael, yep a lot of 'Russian' sets had those clunkers, as did some of the US Zeniths and lots of TVs! I've wondered about chaning this to a figure of eight socket mains but the sockets is built into the chassis.

    Excellent demonstration. Thank you. Would be grateful for advice on substitute for the (lost) AC adaptor, or any battery pack lighter than the 6 D-cells?. Thank you.

    • @Andrewausfa
      @Andrewausfa  2 года назад

      Very hard to find a good original adaptor, they weren't good quality materials to start with and crack. You could adapt one to a figure of 8 lead or just wire it straight up. No real thoughts on the batteries, I know what you mean but I tend to leave them on the shelf :)

      @@Andrewausfa Intending to try "9V AA 6 x 1.5V Plastic CELL Battery Clip Slot Holder Case" from Amazon. Looks and measurements seem ok, and I suspect the connection needs to be soldered to the posts on the right (looking at the radio from the back) of the battery compartment. May not be very tidy, but can be fully enclosed in the compartment and lighter than D-cells. Thank you again.

      Thank you again Andrew. Using a 9V PP3 battery, neatly tucked inside the large D-cell compartment, and works well.

    LOL I thought you had been playing with a selenium rectifier. That’s got to be the mother of all wave change switches! Great video Andrew thanks for sharing. Regards Chris.

    • @Andrewausfa
      @Andrewausfa  5 лет назад +1

      It's the clunker of clunktion. It's a good way of getting around space issues without having a box full of different coils within the radio. As long as the contacts are clean it just works. I have to stay away from Selenium rectifiers, I have two in the house thankfully none have let loose their gaseous obnoxiousness yet.

    I bought three of these about five years ago, new old stock in the boxes, instructions etc. I love these ( use 1, two left sealed)
    I did notice on the circuitry there is a red diode light which is visible thru the air vents at rear. Have you any idea what the purpose of the red light could be? Great videos, thankyou

    In fact, Selena is a complete analogue of the Ocean-209 radio receiver for the USSR. Only Selena was produced specifically for export to Western European countries, and, accordingly, had higher frequencies in the HF subbands, and a full FM range of 88...108 MHz.

    Have b215 was an excellent all rounder until I knocked it off a shelf above my desk at home dented the front panel anyway ended up with no sound at all after much head scratching I found a loose wire on the switch board resoldered this back to normal sound as good as ever except medium wave some static but no stations don't know enough to to do any more wonder if you might have any ideas what damage I have done and do you think it's repairable. Interesting video thanks

    Well you did well there Andrew, I've got one of those myself that I started to renovate and I have done some recapping, the mains unit is duff but I've shelved it for the time being due to the lack of suitable service info. I have tried to locate on the web a suitable schematic for it but all everyone has is either the incorrect model or very crappy schematics spread across many A4 sheets with info missing. I'd love a full sized copy of your schematic if you find a way of copying it?

    I wonder Andrew did the Russian manufacturers of this radio purposely reduced the sensitivity on the FM band for security reason when the radio was used inside Russia.

    • @thehappylittlefoxakabenji8154
      @thehappylittlefoxakabenji8154 5 лет назад

      interesting not heard of that before. The FM band in Russia at that time I believe was 65.8 - 74.0 MHz: could it be that altering it for export to cover the standard 87.5 - 108.0 MHz would have reduced the sensitivity a bit ? I know it drops a little when you try to make an FM set cover the airband or is that because the airband is am ? just a thought maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree no doubt someone will correct me !

    • @Andrewausfa
      @Andrewausfa  5 лет назад

      Not sure Theo but in a 'country' the size of the USSR I wouldn't have thought FM was much listened to outside of major urban centres, being relatively short distance line of sight transmission. They had different wave lengths to us, 65-74mHz or something like that. Anyone in USSR could listen to BBC, VOA, Deutsche Weile on SW with this set (or the prior versions Soviet equivalent)

    • @Theoobovril
      @Theoobovril 5 лет назад

      @@Andrewausfa Just so odd that the sensitivity was so far off making one think this was done on purpose by the manufacturer for some reason.

    • @fromagefondue241
      @fromagefondue241 2 года назад +1

      A bit of a fresh, three years old reply :) : The "Selena" radios were mostly manufactured for export, especially those with Latin letters. If any sensitivity would've been "sabotaged" , it would've been the short waves in order to make receiving Radio Free Europe difficult, I would think. It was a US funded radio station beaming towards Eastern Europe. I do remember, as a kid in the former commie block, being hunkered down over a "smuggled" Grundig radio listening to RFE on very low volume. We did have a Selena but wasn't quite cutting it. Why hunkered over and on low volume? You never knew which one of your neighbours was a potential informant, and you would end up with the secret political police knocking at your door with no pleasant outcome.
