I find that when I buy several albums I don't really get into any of them. As for the sound, if I don't give listening a break, I loose the special sound that my system provides, whether it is vinyl or digital. Having too many albums to listen to ends up that I don't fully appreciate any. So, I slowed down on purchases so I can give each dedicated listening experience for a few months. Of course, I'll listen to other favorites during this time. I find this keeps it fresh and gives me a great listening experience each time.
I should take a page out of your book and attempt that discipline. I completely identify with the feeling that I skip over the enjoyment of a new album too quickly to get to the next one.
That makes sense. Back in the day, getting an album was an event for me. I'd savor each new record I bought, listening over and over again till I knew it like an old friend. Now, with the bargain bins and a little more income than I had when I was a teenager, I rarely buy just one record at a time. It's awesome, but it's hard to feel that special connectiveness to a specific album... unless it just REALLY hits me hard, and then I'll listen to it almost as much as I did the ones I bought way back then.
I fondly remember the days back in early and mid 70s when I could pick up new releases -- on vinyl, of course -- for $4.99 or cessation the Record Factory or Wherehouse (West Coast).
May i add, for Jethro Tull fans, The Chateau D'herouville Sessions album gathering material from the aborted initial The Passion Play sessions. Having heard some of the material this should be a worthwhile investigation. Also for Hawkwind fans their new album due in April and will have to go some to beat The Future Never Waits record which, surprisingly, was one of the band's best ever studio records. Looking forward to the BOC release.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords You’ve probably heard of their one international hit album Laid. It is phenomenal. Also check out Pleased To Meet You, Living In Extraordinary Times, and their orchestral reworks of their best songs, Be Open To The Wonderful. All their albums are awesome. These are just my favorites.
The BOC reissue is destined for upgrading my current used one. Maybe 🤔. I like how you said ' monthly expense ' about Neil. Yep there's always one around the bend 😊. RSD too dagnabbit.
Rick, my vinyl journey was buying records, moving to cassettes when I got my driver's license so I could listen as I drove, then cd's in the 90's, and selling all but five of my albums in my forties, thinking I wouldn't miss them. Well, I've been wrong before! I got back in to vinyl about five years ago, and one of my big goals has been to regain all the albums I remember spinning in my youth. I've pretty much done that, plus a WHOLE lot of additional records! One of the latest ones I re-aquired was "Learning to Crawl". I found it in a local shop for $8 and oh man, there's that joy and thrill that I'm sure you've felt while bin-diving and finding a record you've been searching for. It's a fantastic album!
It really is a great album. I find myself listening The Pretenders first three albums more often than not. Every once in a while, as you said, I'll find an unexpected thrill-find for cheap and in great shape. It happened a couple years ago in a little antique shop in Portsmouth, NH. I usually stay away from records in those shops but began flipping and walked away with an OG pressing of _Love Stinks_ by the J Geils Band in VG+ condition.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords if you're ever in the Memphis Tn area, we have some fantastic shops and even some antique stores that are "unofficial" record stores.
Wow, definitely got to get the Blondie No Exit LP and I wish their Panic Of Girls LP was still available. The Pretenders Learning....I want. I would like to hear that early blues LP release ! Thanks and cheers Rick !
Nice Nice Nice (as always)😁 JP is arriving on Tuesday... Looking forward to BÖC in april. My copy of Secret Treaties is about 3 years old. It was marketed as "American import" and was very expensive...All the best from Öle in Nörway 😁😁😁
I did not know about Secret Treaties reissue, damn, need to hunt that down though my original bought one is still in decent condition. Ooo the Damned too? I just bought "Damned Damned Damned" reissued vinyl, had the CD for years.
The jazz releases are killing my wallet. Even if I wasn't interested in other genres, I'd still be spending too much money. This HAS to be the best era for jazz on vinyl.
I'm excited about VV and The Void's upcoming release "The Cage": dream-wave. Only one track out yet, but pre-ordered, of course! Allegedly released April 5.
Hi Rick, great list and there will be a few now on my list, particularly The Who and The Pretenders. I thought I might add a few more releases, I am not sure whether some might be UK but here goes Richard Hawley “In this city they call you love (May) Paul Weller “66”(May) Springsteen “Best Of Indie exclusive Mark Knopfler “One Deep River (April) The Cure “Paris 30year anniversary (March) Elbow “Audio Vertigo” March) Metallica “Black Album “ (March) I am not sure whether Richard Hawley has made any impression in the USA, his early releases were in the CD era but he had a splendid Greatest release last year. We should make this a regular feature as trying to keep up to date with new releases is difficult. Rgds Pat
For any folks into heavier stuff, fantastic band called Black Breath is releasing a boxset of all their material (stopped releasing and touring a few years ago after their bass player passed). Not too harsh if you don’t like the really heavy vocals/playing, shouted vocals over growling, just insanely solid. Part of RSD. Love Neil, 26 and got my ticket to see him for the first time, can’t wait to hear the new album!
And if you really wanna test your limits… Full of Hell has a new album coming in April. Not for the faint of heart, lead single is a disorientating nightmare in the best way!
Debbie Harry's best album might just be, not a Blondie album, but a solo album she did called Koo Koo; with one of the most memorable examples of cover art ever. The Who, thinking of retiring after the Who Are You album, might have had something to do with drummer Keith Moon's death, which occurred not far from the albums release date. In life, Keith Moon was quite the Jokester. He once had an idea to drag a waterbed of an upper floor hotel suite halfway into the elevator and have it close its doors on it. Another time he rented a limousine and drining around downtown London at rush hour with a powered megaphone, he blared out the open window that "A legion of poisonous snakes are headed this way." Playing a prank like that on one person, must have been multiplied by a thousand. They didn't know which way to scurry. Who Are You might not be the album Who's Next was, but it is one of the most underrated albums. The order of the tracks is ingenius and truly sounds like an album, instead of just a collection of songs The Who Live At Leeds is one of the best live albums ever. Bonus tracks on some of the cds.
_Who Are You_ hits my turntable every few months. Koo Koo is on my list. I never bought it back in the day and was recently reminded of it when I read Debbie Harry's autobiography.
I'm less of a metal head than I was in my formative high school years (82-87) but Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith (1984) are my JP sweet spot and so I'll be curious to check out the new album. By 1986, things started getting a little weird with Turbo (and Ozzy's The Ultimate Sin "housewife in a bumble bee bath robe" period), and I had become much more of an Iron Maiden fan (Live After Death anyone?). The wife of my good friend got him tickets to see The Black Crowes live next month but she has no interest in going; I am the lucky benefactor 😃I've been pleased with the singles so far and picked up the Southern Harmony reissue late last year which was great and is my favorite of theirs). Lastly, I was never much of a 'punk' purist, preferring more post-punk styled bands and so I never much listened to The Damned back in their heyday, but I too was quite taken with that Darkadelic (see 6:08) release from last year. I picked it up based on the singles and found it surprisingly fresh. Commenting because I've never seen anyone else mention it. Cheers!
Cheers!🍺 Agreed on the late 80s metal scene. When synths were brought into the mix it watered some of it down. Some has aged well however. You may have already, but If you haven't listened to any of the Maiden albums released over the last 10 years I think you'll be impressed 😎
Funny how some of our memories get contaminated........I could have sworn that the title of that first BOC album was "ME 262". Maybe I just confused the name of that German Jet with the albums title. So much for my version of the past....what ELSE did I get wrong? That Eric Clapton was.......oh, never mind!
