Demon Slayer Movie: An Outsider's Perspective

- I watched Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train. I had no prior experience with the property, but still enjoyed it quite a bit. This is a spoiler free review of my perspective on the film (with a special guest appearance from someone more familiar with the anime than I). I hope you enjoy the video, if you've seen the Demon Slayer movie let me know what you thought in the comments.

I’ve started watching the show with Sophia, a review coming in the next few days!
so the reason it didnt have info dumps or anything like that is because this was a canon movie meaning its part of the actual story. most movies dont do that. its a actual arc in the manga. so yea
Brother, you don’t have to always get pronunciation right. Don’t worry about those comments talking about how “bad” some word are pronounced.
Great video btw
As a little info, the reason it dragged on a little is similar to the reason why there wasn't as much info dump. The movie is covering a full arc of the actual manga and what you saw at the end was IN the manga and it's being used to serve as a bridge for the new season coming out.
It also serves to show the viewers the other Hashira's (or Pillars in english) thoughts on the characters death, which in some of the comments also shows how STRONG he was considered and, therefor, how strong we can expect the Demons to be from here on out.
I personally went in as both a manga reader and an anime watcher, so I got to pick up on a few more things than people who went blind or only watched the anime.
Great reaction btw, I'm glad you gave it a shot and enjoyed yourself.
Watching it subbed? Please say subbed.
Cool that I dont need to watch the show first because I'll probaly watch it later but I only got like a week before it ends (also gonna watch it on $5 Tuesday)
You’re already a better person for loving Inosuke
I respect anyone who’s an Inosuke fan, especially when they only just saw him lol
@@hannana.4319 dude turns into the MC when he sleeps.

@@kobi-wanaenobi7080 u thinking of Zenitsu, Inosuke is the boar head he was talking about at the beginning
@@II_worm_II oh shit.🙈
I'm 63, knew nothing of the manga/anime, so went in cold...came out absolutely blown away. Saw it 3 times in the IMAX, and have now purchased the digital version of the film and have also watched the series. I have several figurines displayed in my loungeroom and a large framed Displate on my wall. The entire film is simply gorgeous...interesting and well written characters, exquisite animation and a monumental soundtrack...And my favourite character? One word..."Umai!"
That's so cool! I'm really glad you enjoyed Demon slayer so much, and yea mr "Umai!" definitely showed us what a Hashira can be.. "Set your heart ablaze"
That’s awesome, just goes to show that a person of any age and background can enjoy a good anime.
This is super wholesome
That's very awesome and amazing of u sir!
Your profile pic is me gusta, you're obviously legit.
Hello, I'm Japanese.
The water and flames that appear when they use their swords are just expressions. Water and flames do not actually come out of the sword. Due to their breathing and technique, when the technique is precisely reproduced, it looks as if real water is flowing. Water is not shown to the sword of a person with low skill. The author explained that in the comic. sorry my poor English😭
I hope it your helps🥰
In fact, Murata is a water breather, but no water appears in his technique. It is because his skill is lower than Tanjirou and Giyu.
英語は上手でした!分かりやすかったです。
But how does a sword stop you from falling?
@@TheCian19 It's not at all consistent or logical, don't worry about it.
@@TheCian19 anime logic. The effects aren't real but they power, feel, and sounds are like the element shown. The blood demon arts are the only true supernatural things happening. Like how Shinobu isn't actually summoning insects but just mimics the movement and grace of a butterfly. That being said the fire tanjiro used was just signaling his change in breathing styles and the flames only became real when nezuko used her blood demon technique. This explains why the slayers aren't just straight up spamming waterdragons and earthbending.
this is incorrect, when muichiro uses his techniques, the demons talk about the mist appearing
Out of all the animes I watch, Demon slayer was the only one my mom became interested in. With other animes, she shows a little interest but doesn't get invested like my dad, brother and I. But when we watched Demon slayer she demanded we never watch one episode without her, and she bought tickets for the movie the moment they were available.
That’s great, it’s always a good sign!
I remember showing my mom death note and she over all loved it but she hates the ending
Your lucky you have such a cool mom 👌 I try to get my mom into anime or manga all the time I almost got her to watch attack on titan but she didn’t break.
I also watched demon slayer with my mom who's never watched anime before !!! and she loved it
@@slQa. i made her a demon slayer glass paintings for he birthday, tanjiro and nezuko are her babies
My buddy's mom is Japanese, and apparently she said the reason it's particularly popular in Japan is because the story is interwoven with a significant number of Japanese cultural references and puns. Like personalities, pronunciations, numbers, and double meanings across them. Even though I don't understand them myself, I love the series for what it is, and I hope you will too!
Just to clarify - this arc did take place in the story, right where we pick up in the movie. So, yes, the movie was also based on the manga.
Thanks!
Fun fact, inosuke’s blades were actually normal like the other characters but he beat them with a rock to get the serrated edge lol
this displeases the sword maker.
@@danielroden9424 Who beat him severely.
@@coffeedq9061 he tried to, I think Haganezuka or Tanjirou restrained him
"I really like this magic system ... they call it breathing " 😂😂 8:50
The magic system 😂. The water effects and fire effects are just there to add to the fights. Water and flames don't actually come out whenever they swing their swords.
@@xJinRaGna i think that's false, cause if you remember when Tanjiro fights the arrow demon in season 1, he uses his 6th Form to entangle the arrows "without touching them" (he says that himself)
So if the water wasn't real, how was he supposed to do such a thing ? 🤔
@@KazumaFujiiwara 6th form whirlpool is where the user twists their body to create a rotational flowing cut of air. The water is just added effects, he doesn't actually create a whirlpool. Water breathing is all about sword swings that flow seamlessly, like water whereas compared to Rengoku's flame breathing, his swings are so fast and powerful that enemies disintegrate from the force.
@@xJinRaGna I mean I don't know man, when Rengoku was fighting Akaza he even threw a Flame Tiger at him, and we see that he is not inside the tiger so... Plus he blocked the Air Type hits from Akaza with the Flames of the Fourth Form
And he also says to the first demon in the train "my bright red Flame Blade will BURN you to the bone"
So I kinda figured that in the manga the effects aren't real, but in the anime they are cause they carry much more weight to battles
@@KazumaFujiiwara Think of Fifth form Flame Tiger as Akaza's Air Type. His swings are so fast and strong they travel. The tiger is just a representation of the force of his swings.
I saw the movie with my friends the day it came out after school, there were 5 of us and only one of my friends hadn’t seen the show, and he still loved it, it’s good to know that even people who aren’t fans of the series are enjoying it!
Also make sure to let your daughter know that season 2 was announced awhile ago
Will do!
@BLANK ANIME AMV 2
@BLANK ANIME AMV bro, that's actually cring.
You are correct on the ending, its more character development for the Hashira/Pillars. We only got a little bit of development in the anime series for them and they were set up as somewhat of an untouchable/unbeatable force. So we get to see their reaction to losing one of their own and how they handle it personally.
Cool! Thanks for the insight, I'm going to watch the series this week.
Wow spoilers
@@Offisian if you're looking at comments on a review for a movie thats been out for going on a month, its a safe bet that spoilers are more than likely there intended or not.

This is a relatively interesting perspective because as someone who's seen the show and gotten to know Tanjiro as a character, the dream sequence was one of the most powerful parts of the film.
This is a really good review especially from a non demon slayer fan! Also one reason why u might’ve not enjoyed the dreams is bc those dreams Are sorta their personality. And u wouldn’t have understood most of them
Thanks, I appreciate it.
The fact that instantly your favorite character is inosuke makes me happy. He is definitely my favorite
I'm an almost 28 year old anime fan and I'm watching it at the theater with my stepdad today. I watched the first season and I enjoyed it. While my stepdad is going in blind, we did see One Piece: Stampede in theaters a couple years ago and the show is still ongoing with currently over 900 episodes...and he liked it. I think your daughter will be happy to know that season 2 is coming out later this year and that it directly follows the movie's ending.
Cool! Thanks, enjoy the movie!

It's really sweet of you for taking your daughter with you. My mom went with me also not because of age limit but I forced her to. I just wanted us to bond with this film. Although, I made her watch the series so she at least had an idea what's going on 🤣🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not gonna lie, as someone who DID see the show before the movie, I didn’t enjoy the first act either so don’t worry about it. The later half of the movie though was where it shined for me
“I feel like cramming for a test in the bus on the way to the school in the morning of the test” 😂🤣 LOL
Good Job! This is a good honest assessment of the emotional levity of the subject matter to someone unfamiliar with the source material. I could only imagine that Tanjiro's dream sequence would fall flat not knowing his family was murdered by someone from not having watched the first episode.
Well from the context of his dead family blaming him for their deaths, one might easily draw that conclusion
if someone likes inosuke ( the shirtless boar head guy ) they are automatically a true demon slayer fan
Dude, you are the man for spending this time with her and showing interest. Reminds me of introducing my mom to Lord of the Rings.
The Demon Slayer movie is not only _like_ the season one finale, it IS the season one finale. I binge-watched season one for a week before reaching the movie.
I appreciate hearing the perspective of an outsider a lot. Existing fans tend to be rabidly positive only. As a fan of the show I knew what I was heading into and you were in the mark a lot with "this means more to fans who know". I saw your comment you started watching the show after and look forward to hearing your thoughts.
良いお父さん!ありがとう❤
I love you from japan 🇯🇵
I love that you went into the movie with so much positivity! It's a really thoughtful review for someone who hasn't seen/read the series. I read a review by someone who didn't watch the show and he rated it SO low. As a big fan, it bummed me out. I think I needed this video to make me feel better. Saw that you started season 1 as well, I hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so much!!
Great review, loved hearing about your thoughts on the movie and glad you enjoyed!
Inosuke’s breathing Styles an adapted/self-improvised version, exclusive to him, and I’m pretty sure no one else can replicate it because it’s too wild lmao
Unique perspective thanks for sharing your thoughts
I loved your review so much! I didn’t expect to watch the entire video but I did because you had such a great story-telling voice. Best of luck to you down the road with your videos! I would really like to see more people click on your channel

Thanks for the great, honest review! These types of movies with already established characters and continuities can be difficult to dive right into it, but it's awesome that you were still able to enjoy most of the movie. It's also great of you to join your daughter in something she seemed to really enjoy as well! Thanks for being an awesome parent!
when he talks about the time setting, its the Taisho Era, that the movie takes place in.
Thanks!
Great review. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Always good to see an outsiders view on a show. Understandable that the dream parts didn't catch you it's really just for progressing the characters from the show itself. Glad you overall enjoyed it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! Your review was good and made me laugh a bit. I love seeing people who consider themselves "outsiders" to a series come in and be able to enjoy things.
Great video Bruce (makes me want to watch the film!)
Ok let me explain a little thing. The magic system is not magic. It's actually just techniques. The thing is that they train so hard that they end up doing their techniques with such finess that it looks like it has an element. Mainly a bit of fancervice for us. The only thing with something like magic are the demons. ( the breathing is just a way of breathing that increases your heart rate , oxygen circulation exetera this increases your physical abilities a bit)
Cool, thanks!
Yes, it’s kind of a visual metaphor
Yeah is an illustration. The characters can't see the water or the fire it is an illustration for the viewers.
@@diegoocampo5543 I’d disagree with that. That one scene in the anime where the average cops see the spell by that one female demon that helps Tanjiro with the guy that got turned by Muzan.
That's simply not possible as many things that happen in the anime are just not possible without the anime.
Just to give you a tip, demon slayer season 2 is coming out soon so if you liked season 1 then you have something to look forward to soon 🙏
Awesome!
Beautiful review. Those criticisms are on point. It's good to see someone trying to understand and understand the perspective but retaining their own judgement.
Thank you
So fun seeing an outsiders perspective on the movie especially if they haven't seen anime before !
At the end of the movie, the people they showed were the other Hashira(Pillars), and their relative reactions were based on their relationship with Rengoku (which is to be detailed more in the manga as the story goes on) and their personalities. And also, Rengoku is set to be the most admired/liked person among the Pillars (according to an appendix of the manga). I actually cried harder when the snake guy said he doesn't believe it, so for a manga reader, the ending was pretty awesome. But yeah, for outsiders, it might just be baffling and overwhelming to see a lot of new characters appearing all at once, however, you might just get a glimpse of how Rengoku impacts the Demon Slayer world.
nice review! really appreciate the honest criticism, plus the unique perspective u provided as an outsider 🙏
This is so wholesome. I'm so so happy you loved the movie!!
Love seeing the perspective of someone who didn't watch the show before. I loved this movie so much.

I love this review- it's so nice to see an outsider's perspective-
My mom and I went as well for bonding since I hadn't seen her in a while and she was in the same exact position as you.
She did try asking me things during the movie though since I couldn't explain it beforehand 😂

Halfway through, I absolutely LOVE this review. Funny stuff.

I've seen this movie like 4 times already, and it's really good. I like how simple this outsider's look on anime review is, it's refreshing to see someone not picking apart every single aspect of every second.
Great video! Loved it! I watched the movie yesterday and I liked so much! Hope to see your review of season 1 and 2 as well!
I am eagerly anticipating season 2
I'm glad you got a brief summary from your daughter. When my friend took me to see it, I went on completely blind. I only recognized the main guy, I knew they slayed demons, and I knew of Inosuke (at the time, he was only that one character that had a boar head that strangely scared the hell out of me and reminded me of princess mononoke, but ironically became my favorite character after the movie xD)

Yeah, I’ve made it to episode 20 so far, that’s my plan
I watch this movie with my brother the other day! He went in blind (with just a brief explanation of the characters in the car ride because I didn’t know what the movie would explain) and he had a lot of the same feelings as you. It’s nice to see people who hadn’t watched the show enjoy it.
Congrats on 3,000 views Bruce! Happy to see.

Glad you liked the movie! I actually also went in blind when I watched it with my cousins, I'd only watched the first episode, and I loved it! Now that I've seen the anime, I want to go rewatch it, haha. Nezuko (the demon girl) is also one of my favorite characters :)
Nezuko is wonderful
Ngl, it's impressive how invested you got into the whole thing. Especially since you had so little background information on the series. I'm glad to see anime transcend its niche and enter the mainstream as more people can appreciate all the great stories being told in this medium. Demon Slayer is an especially cool and accessible one due to its popularity, but trust me when I say that there's some real masterpieces out there. Check out Monster, Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion if you have the time. They are some universally praised all time classics.
Great review from a newbie, i can understand how the lore can he overwhelming.

as someone who usually hopes for non anime fans to enjoy anime in and of itself.... what a review! loved hearing your opinion on it. Also really interesting to hear a parent's enjoyment too. My dad personally cannot give anything animated a chance so this was refreshing!
Thanks a ton!
Nice review. I like how you took the time to heart almost all the comments. Very engaged with your viewers

@2:19 this summarizes the mega success of demon slayer your response right there
Take notes anime writers if your trying to replicate big numbers this level of simplicity and ease of digestion of the premise is key

I hope so
The music during the final act was the cherry on top for me.
Bout to see this for the third time. Just subscribed. Is small channels gotta stick together
This was a really interesting idea. I don't think the movie was intended for newcomers, being a direct continuation of the show, but it was interesting to see what someone thinks of the movie without watching the show. Reminds me of when I had my dad take me to the Avatar The Last Airbender movie... Only in that case, I am still ashamed to this day of wanting to see that.
This was a great review
