    I’ve named her “Janet”. She sews through everything like a dream. Only thing I don’t like about it is there is no slow speed. Can’t wait to try her for free motion quilting.

      Most machines from this era came with rheostat speed/foot control. They are very solid, but not as delicate at delivering speed control. You could ask a local sewing-vacuum service dealer replace it with a generic electronic pedal. As long as the motor is functioning properly, there is a chance the new pedal could provide you with better control over the machine's speed. This is not 100 % a solution but it often works.

    I have this same machine! It's the one my mom made all my clothes on, the one my dad made our camping tent on, and the one I learned to sew on. It's a total workhorse, and my mom actually used it one year to perforate hundreds of booklets of raffle tickets for my school. It never even blinked. GREAT machine. Question: What's the difference between Sew and Darn, on the pushbuttons at the front?

      Also question: Do you have any suggestions where to look for a replacement instruction book for this machine? Mine apparently got wet at some time in the past, and is a stuck-together mess that I'm not sure I can rescue.

      Sew is the setting for normal sewing. Darn is the setting which lowers the feed dogs for darning holes in socks/garments as well as for free motion embroidery. Getting a manual for this would be challenging but any machine that is remotely like this one (there were LOTS of versions under different private labels from Japan) would be of great help.

      @@VintageSewingMachineGarage You could darn socks with this thing? That's AMAZING. Um, hey, I don't suppose that machine you have there came with a manual, did it? That you could scan to PDF or photocopy?

    What does the spring loaded pin in the top rear left do?

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi. If you are pointing out the pin/post with the knurled collar on top, that is the Presser Bar pressure adjustment. It allows you to increase or decrease the amount of spring pressure that forces the sewing foot down onto the fabric you are stitching. (The spring itself can often be seen behind the side door that opens to reveal it along with the needle bar.

    Today I bought an Abraham & Strauss machine. It was made in Japan. I am having trouble finding any info on it. Could you help me figure it out ?

      Hi Sabrina. Abraham & Strauss was a department store chain based in the Northeastern US and was a competitor to Macys and Gimbels. That retailer was bought years ago, but they left behind some very beautiful buildings that are occupied by other businesses in NYC for example. Your machine was a private label and likely made by one of the Japanese machine producers back then. It is likely a 50s or 60s machine. I am unable to see it of course, but I would guess that it uses Class 15 bobbins and bobbin case. It should have some similarities to other "House Brands" from that era. Finding a manual is not always easy but you can search online. You might also brouse other similar looking machines that would have been made but with different names.

    So how do you set up a sewing machine to sew leather?

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  4 года назад +1

      There are a few things that can help "encourage" a domestic machine to do this. First, be sure the leather is lighter weight garment leather and is flexible. (very dense leathers won't be sewable on domestic machines). Next, you want to use a needle that is made for leather. There are home sewing needles that fit your machine but have tips that help make leather sewing easier. These can normally be found in any sewing supply store or online. Lastly, if your leather binds under the standard foot, you might want to try what is called a "Roller Foot". It looks like a sewing foot but with little wheels underneath. This can help when leather and vinyls create too much friction and bind the material under the foot preventing feeding.

      I couldnt get the wheel turned to sew through leather. I have an old hand cranked singer and it sews through leather pretty well. Also the only other machine that prob would is the Chinese cobbler sewing machine. witha few modifications it would prob work well. I watched lots of youtube videos on it
