Lots of pizazz, I would also like a bit more contemplation with this beautiful Raag. So much jhalla my ears are going home. On the positive side, I like the joy he brings to the music, there is too much false solemnity.
Who cares about a raag. This sounds really nice and tight. I'll never get people's obsession with replicating the same motives you've heard a thousand times, especially since most hindustani music is based on improv anyway. Sometimes it's the same kind of ridiculous standards people in western classical have.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with the comment under "Bhindi Bazaar Dialogues" about the term used "Dextrous Desh" for the Sarod performance uploaded here. Soumik Datta's Desh piece has indeed amazed me with his dexterity, but also with his interpretation of raga Desh. I wish this was played completely by him, including alap, jor, gat bandish etc in accompaniment with a good tablist. This new Sarod find (at least for me) is delightful, and hope to hear from this dashing artist in the future.

Okay, this is a curatorial error from Darbar. Soumik Datta is a fine sarod player but this was clearly not his day. Not fair to him to put up something that doesn't reflect his competence
Pratik Shome There is a lot of fast playing but no “soul”. Go and listen to a great maestro like Pt Nikhil Banerjee or even Pt Buddhadev Dasgupta (Soumik’s guru) and you will see the difference.

Raaga has nothing to do with tempo I guess. It may seem noisy because this is the Jhalla part of performance where the Sa is played almost after every note.
I feel your judgement is incorrect because there is no such thing that says that a particular artist should play a raga in a particular way. These are merely mainstream rules and set by people which appear to deceive the freedom of movement and exploration swaras and interpretations of a raga by an artist in his or her own free will. Please refrain from having such expectations over how a raga must demonstrated by all artists. If you feel Desh must be played slowly, then so be it, but don’t impose such expectations and belittle the interpretations of other artists’ rendering of such ragas. It’s unique and beautiful in their own way.
@@AnshumanVenkatesh first the artist must unfold the raaga gradually through alaap and jod. And there ARE certain ragas which are better suited in a slower tempo. In Indian classical music we all serve the raga, and the artist is too trivial before the raga. I guess his rendition of desh concerns more with his showmanship than the soul of raag desh.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with the comment under "Bhindi Bazaar Dialogues" about the term used "Dextrous Desh" for the Sarod performance uploaded here. Soumik Datta's Desh piece has indeed amazed me with his dexterity, but also with his interpretation of raga Desh. I wish this was played completely by him, including alap, jor, gat bandish etc in accompaniment with a good tablist. This new Sarod find (at least for me) is delightful, and hope to hear from this dashing artist in the future.

Pratik Shome There is a lot of fast playing but no “soul”. Go and listen to a great maestro like Pt Nikhil Banerjee or even Pt Buddhadev Dasgupta (Soumik’s guru) and you will see the difference.

Shouldn't desh be a bit slower? TBH, I have heard only carnatic desh. This seems a bit noisy to my untrained ears
You are actually correct my friend.
Raaga has nothing to do with tempo I guess. It may seem noisy because this is the Jhalla part of performance where the Sa is played almost after every note.

I feel your judgement is incorrect because there is no such thing that says that a particular artist should play a raga in a particular way. These are merely mainstream rules and set by people which appear to deceive the freedom of movement and exploration swaras and interpretations of a raga by an artist in his or her own free will. Please refrain from having such expectations over how a raga must demonstrated by all artists. If you feel Desh must be played slowly, then so be it, but don’t impose such expectations and belittle the interpretations of other artists’ rendering of such ragas. It’s unique and beautiful in their own way.
@@AnshumanVenkatesh first the artist must unfold the raaga gradually through alaap and jod. And there ARE certain ragas which are better suited in a slower tempo. In Indian classical music we all serve the raga, and the artist is too trivial before the raga. I guess his rendition of desh concerns more with his showmanship than the soul of raag desh.
