"Losing My Religion" is on old southern phrase that means "losing my mind". The beautiful and ICONIC video goes for a more literal interpretation with all the religious imagery from Hindu goddesses to doubting Thomas and St. Sebastian. But the song is more about being so consumed with one's feelings for someone that you begin to lose your sense of self.

I read that the music video was inspired by a short tale from Gabriel García Márquez, the author of 100 Years of Solitude, called "a very old man with enormous wings". Actually, I read the novel and you can certainly see its influence. Fantastic song, though A true classic!

I read an interview to Stipe, he basically was saying that the video went far too deep and gave a new meaning and perspectives to the song, he was not thinking about religion when he wrote the lyrics. I didn't know the meaning of "losing my religion" but it makes sense now.

It's interesting how this song gets interpreted differently by each listener, which is the sign of any good art, really. But as others have mentioned 'losing my religion' means losing control, going crazy, doing something out of the norm because of frustration or desperation. It is an old Southern term, like 'about to lose my salvation'. I'm about to fly off the handle, essentially. But I think there is a lot of hurt and regret in the song. Failing to win the affection of the person you want and having to keep yourself under control seeing them with someone else. It's been a favorite of mine since it came out when I was in junior high.

Losing my religion is an old southern colloquialism that means something so upsetting has happened that you might "lose your religion". Stipe used this as a metaphor for being in love with someone who does not feel the same way. He eluded to this a couple of years ago; “You don’t ever really know if the person that I’m reaching out for is aware of me, if they even know that I exist.”

They aren't my thing but like some of their songs like Orange Crush, End of the World..., The One I Love, Radio Song ( w/ KRS ONE), Everybody Hurts, Man on the Moon, and Drive. I personally would buy a hits disc and be good with myself on the REM tracks I'd have in my catalog LOL.

This is a song about trying to win the attention and affection of someone you like a lot, without opening yourself up to the vulnerability of letting them know, in case they don't feel the same way. You try to protect your feelings but oops you let something slip out. Now how will they react?
You could look at it as a shy person having a silly crush that's making them feel crazy, or being secretly gay in the American South in the 1980s and not always knowing if it's even safe to flirt with someone you're attracted to.

As it got popular i began hearing so many diff takes on what ppl thought they were hearing. Your interpretation is diff than mine. But isnt that what music is supposed to be? Songs poems the written word all mean something diff to each. As for the mistakes you made, God at our birth gives a key to every door we choose to walk thru. Its up to us to decide which door to open. I dont know anyone who hasnt made so bad choices. Dont sweat those. Live for today. Live for you and your children. God will show you your path n when the time is right He will show you the person you are meant to spend your life with. We out here in subscriber-ville love you n your channel. Keep the faith. Be still and know HE is GOD. Great react kiddo

The video has notes of Caravaggio and Vermeer paintings. One must look artistically at this video to find the "meaning". Its truly individualized at how everyone looks at a situation. In the South there IS a quote "Lost my religion" and I think Stipe and Co. expanded on that beautifully. It's not about religion, its a love song believe it or not, but really listen to the words. You were very close with losing hope, but even moreso I think its the push and pull of confidence, vulnerability, doubt, sadness, elation, and disappointment. Like the song, unrequited love is an enigma 😘😘

Joe Pegel That’s the definition for how we use it here in the south. “Y’all are being so obnoxious you’re about to make me lose my religion.” It’s about anger or frustration, he’s frustrated that he can’t figure out if his love interest is getting the signals he’s sending. It’s one of my all time favorite songs.

A lot of powerful symbolism in this video. You have the spilt milk in the beginning which reminds you of the saying "no use crying over spilt milk" or in other words, what is done is done. You have the image of Icarus (the guy who flew too close to the sun and melted his wings). You have the imagery of either a fallen Angel or someone cast out of Heaven. Then there are the guys at the anvil and the guy at the spotlight dressed like a figure from the old Soviet propaganda posters.

This is a great song, and a weird song. Lyrically, I don't think anybody knows what it's about. I think it's actually just a love song about the quixotic and contrasting emotions of being in a young relationship, but it's strangely written filled with bizarre and conflicting imagery both lyrically and in the music video, which was considered one of the most influential of it's time I might add. "Losing My Religion" is just a southern slang, but the way it's performed and portrayed you wonder about the double-meanings of the phrase. Also, Michael Stipe is gay and I believe open about it in 1991, during the heights of the AIDS epidemic, and he's also just an intensely private man, and the band is notoriously private in general as well, so this sense of building and intensity and frustration, and bizarre, angelic and biblical imagery just seems to build and build into a song that gives it's lyrics much more power. One of the best songs of the '90s, even if trying to get a true handle on it's meaning is out of reach.

Like any great song the meanings are open to interpretation. The video, is a creation that came after the song, so, discounting it as another medium entirely as most videos are...here's been my interpretation, again, just my take. Once we know that "losing my religion" means getting angry, with that in mind. "Trying to keep up with you", "I thought that I heard you laughing", or other such annoying stuff. And then, "Oh no I said too much." Well, oooops, the subject of the song has gone off on someone and now realizes they have made a mistake. They explain why, but it rings hollow as an apology and more a self-centered excuse as to the anger.

REM are from Georgia and in the south it is just an expression /"Losing my religion"/....means losing one's temper or “at my wit's end,” “Losing your religion” over a person, could mean that you're losing faith in that particular person. It is not meant to be taken literally. I think in this song he is going crazy over his feelings for someone and not sure how to express himself to this person.

I bought the lead singer, Michael Stipe, coffee at a little club in Athens, GA back in the day. He was always a weird, non-emotive guy, until he sang.

Hi, great video,. I love watch videos like yours reacting to rock songs, mainly if it is from 90s. One day you could react to Smashing Pumpkins. They have great songs, like: 1979, today, disarm, tonight tonight, drown, Cherub rock. Thank you

The beauty of Mike Stipe's lyrics is that they always had a double meaning, that often connected. This song can be about both losing your faith, and losing your temper (the southern expression), as people often do lose their temper when their faith is challenged. Their song All The Way To Reno, is about both young ambition, how they're 'gonna be a star', but also I've heard Reno has a reputation for where wannabes go to try and make it big, but never do. So it seems sarcastic 'you think you're gonna be a star, sure... all the way to Reno'.

What you said was spot on about the meaning...The fact that the video showed all different gods and prophets and then he was singing, "I THOUGHT THAT I HEARD YOU LAUGHING, I THOUGHT THAT I HEARD YOU SING"...
Michael Stipe was referencing both BUDAH (ALWAYS depicted in statues and described in real life as a laughing man, full of joy and peace) and CHRISTIANITY (People sing in churches and praise God)...Michael was singing about the search for something to believe in in this world...how everyone, weather religious or spiritual, scientific based beliefs OR none of the above, ALL search for something in life...How sometimes the different sides of the spectrum you run to for guidence or peace can make it all confusing when there are sooo many ways to search for peace and understanding of self or the world or the deeper meaning to the universe (possibly for him personally or in general)...It seems as though he or talking about people in general, can be at their lowest low and not know what the deeper meaning of self, the world, the universe is...It's a song about searching to understand these things and try to find what in this world brings you to the path of peace...Everyone has their own interpretation, but from listening to the song and seeing the video...this is my take on the song...
Also, I'm from the 80's onward MTV generation and when I first saw the video on MTV and even before when I heard the song...it hit me in all the feels...Still does! 😎...
    Also...I want that shirt! It's rad! 😊🥰🎃✌️🤘🖖🙏🏽☯️ 🕊️ ☮️
