  • This is simply the start of this ongoing conversation we will have this year but it's been a while since we've had a "grounding" conversation so you at least know where I am coming from and you can tell me where you're at.
    LET'S BE REAL. THIS ISN'T A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT WE LIKE... CHALLENGE: think generally about what type of Eurovision "package" has the best chance at winning this year.
    Alesia Michelle is a Eurovision blogger, based in the United States and has been covering the Eurovision Song Contest on RUclips since 2015. The 68th Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted in Malmö, Sweden. Semifinals and finals will be held May 7th, 9th and 11th in Malmö Arena.

    each year we have :
    - a shock NQ
    - a "top 10 by odds" in the bottom 5
    - a good surprise
    - a song that ranks well because of international news or an external event
    - a "meh" performance
    But above all, each song influences the others. So we have to wait for all the songs to predict their fates.

    What’s interesting for me this year is that multiple entries and songs give me “top ten vibes” but I haven’t had those winner vibe tingles yet. Ukraine, Norway and Italy “feel” like top ten finishes but idk about winner. Serbia also has a couple songs in their NF I think could do major damage on the scoreboard. I’m very excited to get our full entry lineup and see what gives me those “winner tingles” then (lol).

    I think I agree with you ultimately. But the interesting part about this year is the artists have TWO artists to copycat, Loreen and Kaarija. Those two have so many genres covered and the crave is real for something new and fresh. Ukraine does fill that void, but it isn't the 100% we know this is the winner yet. I can absolutely see one act being the full force winner potential, but I can also see a murky unknown leaderboard. We just came out of a two horse race that sucked literally ALL the points away from 24 other acts, so maybe this time people won't coalesce as much towards one act. Who knows. It's gonna be interesting

    • @AlesiaMichelle

    This was such a great conversation.... even though the people wanted something fun and different in 2023 with Cha Cha Cha, Tattoo did come 2nd, so the crowd/Europe wanted something dancey-pop.... so I feel this year will be hopefully 1 of the 2 or both...
    Seeing the trends as we see it, and Europe rarely follows what's trending in the music world, which is currently, hip-hop/rap, sad girl/sad boy songs
    The winning song is likely to be a
    1: A genre that’s not pop (e.g Rock, Rave, Ballad, Ethnic Folk)
    2: A country who has never won before

  • @turtellok4964
    @turtellok4964 5 месяцев назад

    I love these kind of videos and I totally agree with you when you say that our winner is more likely to be a man or to just go in a different direction than Loreen did last year. Also I think when we look at the line up we have so far Slimane still sticks out a lot, we don't have a lot of ballads or male performers this year. Also I wouldn't rule out Norway just yet when we're talking about winner potential. I might be biased, but this blend of ethnic elements and rock elements paired with this great execution, might lead to a top 3 finish with the televote if not even a win. However I kinda feel like we haven't heard the winner yet

  • @Crowleas
    @Crowleas 5 месяцев назад +3

    Wonderful and very interesting video!
    I 've always been thinking that copying the most recent winner is the safest recipe for failure. It only worked in 2004 and 2005 and never again since.
    My favorite entry so far is Norway but I don't think it can really win. 3rd place would be its best case scenario.
    I have that feeling that it's France's year. Slimane is way too good to be overlooked, even with a relatively uninspired song. As the line up is forming, we are gonna have too many up-beat songs and too many weird songs for special tastes. I think the simple, globally recognizable classic emotional ballad will stand out. Especially as served in a so exceptionally great and impactful version by a so solid, generous, charismatic and charming man. It looks like Slimane won't have any direct competition but even if he has, his perfection is glorious enough to beat any competitor. I mean he's doing the male emotional ballad as powerfully as it gets. I don't think any man could top that. So, I feel that France is a great contender to win the jury vote and if the staging is wise enough to let the emotion flow and shine properly, even the televoting will give him a top4 finishing. Which would make a winner.
    Italy can and will climb up there in top3 but all (or a few) of those other strong ladies you mentioned will deprive Angelina of victory potentials.
    Ukraine is almost guaranteed top5 but I think (and HOPE) is not having a momentum for victory.

  • @revolution9095

    I think that Alesia is soft-launching a case for a German win this year, assuming that Ryk's Oh Boy is selected. It would align with the general trends outlined in the video (a male ballad to contrast with the most recent winners). A reference to Germany is conspicuously absent from this video (unless I missed it, I'm open to correction). Our pocket-books would breathe a sigh of relief (relative to another Nordic win).
    UPDATE: Well I guess it’s all moot now 😅

  • @jackseas2929
    @jackseas2929 5 месяцев назад +15

    The reset this year surprisingly I don’t think will be based from the winner’s result last year, I think it’ll be down to Käärijä. I feel a lot of countries will have seen how well he did with the juries and will try to replicate that, whilst going for that semi-final televote appeal. ie. Finland, Netherlands, potentially Croatia if Let3 perform again, the roop are in the mix again.
    Whilst I don’t think an act like that has the potential to do as well as Käärija did, I just have a feeling it’ll be a well produced male pop track that people will gravitate to, with solid vocals and an overall great package and staging that will cut through a lot of the madness this year. That’s why I feel the UK have been very smart choosing Olly - but again we’ll have to wait for the whole package in Malmö! (great video btw)

    I have a simple, humble opinion: either people will go for the male ballad,due to the fact that there are sooooo many women, this year (I would love SO MUCH to see France or Germany win), or people will go for a "screw everything, we wanna have fun" positive vibe. In that case, Estonia and Spain will have a very strong chance to get the prize (assuming that the song with the big name wins). As for my country, Portugal, I don't even think it will qualify, so I'm being quite neutral, in this comment. Ireland? Oh, I would love to see this country qualify! In short, the usual songs with a female in the lead, singing or dancing well, are for a very rough 2024.But anyway, good luck to everyone. great analysis, Alesia, as always :).

    @AlesiaMichelle I think that at this stage of Eurovision 2024 pre-selections we can already say it`s being an anomaly year when it comes to music, apart from the world context and unrest. With that said, it seems like there isn`t a firm contender for the win (unlike 2023 with Loreen) or a specific musical genre standing out. There`s been kinda shift of musical pattern in recent years, since we`ve turned from ethnic entries to more "generic" songs. It feels like the "freak age" or the dark years of the second half of the 2000' s are coming back again and I personally wouldn`t want to see that again, and I must remark I enjoyed Lordi`s victory back in 2006. But to my Eurofan experience, any country except for Israel could hold the glass microphone in May.
    I really love the excellent work you`ve done in these years and you`re still doing, keep it going! 😍😍😍

    Alesia, an age long loyal fan of yours here.
    I see copycats often happen with top 5 entries but not so much with the winner. We have had several Fuego songs, several songs with dance breaks (Slomo). A consistent thing to copy is a Sanremo style of performance like male or female solo singer with an emotional ballad. To me this is good to stand out and be top 10 but not for winning because you miss the X factor.
    I am feeling a disruptor could come. And I am feeling someone more mature could be that disruptor. Loreen was 39 I think last year. Some seasoned artitst in their 40s (or even 50s) could be that disrupter.

    It could go into two possible directions: very quiet ballad about hope or an upbeat pop. First, because we can not underestimate the effects of the war in the middle east on europe’s collective psychology. Having said that, the upbeat pop could win from the similar reasons: people are tired and need something to lift them up a little. I would agree that Italy have sent Irama, male power ballad, maybe he could have fit in in that prediction of yours about patterns. He had such a powerful presence on stage. However NS sometimes have a problem, because the cultural preferance for the particular preformers could inspire people to vote for their winner but could miss the potential winner of ESC.

    I feel like there is also something to be said for a countries track record.
    With hosting for example no one would be angry if we got another year like Liverpool 2023 but people might hesitate in going back to say turin 2022, so fans may be less likely to vote for a country likely to deliver a poor show if they win. Just some thoughts myself and some other eurovision friends came up with.

    A strong card for ireland is that bambie thug will be (i believe) the first openly non binary artist at eurovision to be out during the show and we could possibly see something along the lines of 2014 where the community comes out in force for the song as there will likely be a lot of casual viewers who may flick on the tv and see bambie thug, grasp on to the song and throw them a vote. As well as that bambie has very openly stated that they want to win and will jot do anything by half. I think that this year there is a good chance for people to gravitate towards a more niche genre and wind up sending ireland into an economic disaster 😂

    i get the need to identify patterns and to some extent they may be valid, but i think it’s way more relevant to analyse the current context and what we know about this years’ songs. at the end of the day it’s a math equation. and what the people really want isn’t guaranteed to end up winning (people pretty clearly wanted kaarija last year, and not loreen)
    but yeah overall, ukraine taken apart from the discussion, males should have an upper hand this year

    What's interesting for me is that people are very divided on who's going to win, there seems to be no clear favourite so far, except for the odds pointing to Croatia. Here's my thoughts:
    - Italy is going to be up against Greece, Malta, Cyprus, and Luxemburg. My mind is not made up yet, but I feel the momentum is gonna be on Greece, either way none of the countries will accumulate enough points to win the whole thing because they are very similar and hit the same public vote. I could see the Jury favouring Italy out of the other 4 but not the Tele-vote.
    - Potential winner pot following the patterns that you mentioned (which I agree on): Croatia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and perhaps Lithuania. Now this is interesting because they are going to attract the same crowd (as UK, Estonia and Finland but all three are out of winner competition). So the tele-vote will be very indecisive though I could see it favouring the Netherlands or Croatia. The winner will be one which accumulates enough points from the Tele-vote and the Jury, and I think Switzerland is capable of both. Either way I think a lot of countries will get very few points from the Tele- vote because of this strong pot.
    - Winner vibes but unlikely to win: Ukraine and France
    - Winner: Switzerland with both Jury and Tele-vote but not winning either or Croatia winning a landslide in the Tele-vote

    I loved Eurovision in the Early Noughties. There were some bangers that came out of that era! This year feels very Female Pop Diva Heavy. This year I just want to dance! The songs I'm wild for right now are United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, guuurl Albania. Chile 💅 Albania always gets me. France's entry is male, it's a ballad, it's for some people. Not, for me. And, I acknowledge that it's a refreshing entry from the sea that's out there. The spitting in the video kinda grosses me out, wish they had selected a different part of the video clip. If, we are going to get Male powerhouses it's probably going to come from the Baltics, or Greece, or Cypress. What is Germany doing?

  • @GospodinNelson
    @GospodinNelson 5 месяцев назад +8

    I often see comments like "No one is like him/her, they're gonna stand out and win", but that can go in two totally different directions. If several entries are in same sphere, but they are staged in excellent way so that they all become contenders that one "other song" could just be left in dust doing its own thing. The moment when "that song" becomes contender is when others are not executed in such a good way that people fight for them to win. With that said I actually think this year's overall winner will be a woman and that it will be something epic and powerful. Women have been clearly carrying this year's national final season and music industry in the world in general and dominated in almost every national final this year, and several internally selected female artists are very skilled performers, so I just think 2024 will give us another female winner.
    I think that out of confirmed songs Norway and Slovenia could be contenders for the win and Ireland is a dark horse that could potentially pull Finland 2006, and I think the fact that Sweden came for them last year is doing them a big favor and this year they somehow overcame themselves and brought something authentic and original, so the stars could really align for them. Other countries which could be winner contenders are Greece, potentially Serbia and Italy, and Switzerland is obviously cooking something in silence. If we're gonna have a male winner with a power ballad (which is possible cause ESC can be a six sided dice game) it's gonna be Latvia. I truly felt winner vibes in Supernova final performance and something which could captivate both jury and televoting.

    • @AlesiaMichelle
      @AlesiaMichelle  5 месяцев назад +6

      Okay- I hear you on the potential for another woman to take the crown. I don't think it's impossible but the fight to STAND out will be tough. I love the mention of Switzerland because they are dropping crumbs that could be really promising: I don't want to count them out, but I'll need to taste the sauce. Greece and Serbia could DEFINITELY "WOW" us some I am buckled up for that.
      BUT! I think if Germany selects Ryk, he's going to best Dons when it comes to the studio cut. I think "Oh Boy" is far more ambitious and modern of a studio cut than "Hollow" even though it is perfectly fine and executed well.

    Even before I heard the snippet of "Dizzy" I was already biased towards the UK's victory for this year. After 2022 and seeing how fantastic of a performance Sam Ryder gave us, as well as how brilliant Mae Muller's performance was (disregarding vocals) only to see her end up in 25th place left a bad taste in my mouth. After 2 years of pure winner level quality I'm craving the UK's victory. And after the royal disaster that was the 2022 show from bad arena lighting, to so many camera fails, to the main focal point of the stage breaking before the show was horrible. Then seeing how amazing of a show the BBC put on in Liverpool left me desperate for them to host again, just for the pure fantastic show quality. Olly Alexander has so much momentum that if his song really isn't a radio friendly song and a much more impactful one, he could have this in the bag.
