We answer that question in this episode where Chris and I purchase a Shakespeare gx2 combo and try our luck on the kayaks with some nice redfish and black drum. I think you will even be surprised by what this $44 combo can do, I was shocked. Checkout my kayak: bit.ly/oldtown_...

In December I got my friend his first setup, 7ft ugly stik GX2, shimano sienna 4000, 30lbs kastking braid with 30lbs PLine voltage as leader.... 2/0 owner circle.... tipped with shrimp..... caught a 40lbs spotted eagle ray... locked down drag.... almost got spooled but with a little experience and patience.... got it in easy.... fun fight... got the pics and video to prove it.... great rod.

Shakespeare makes ugly stik, I swear by those rods, and a quantum reel. Where I fish a 24" 8-10 pound trout that fight like a heavyweight boxer are the norm and never had an issue with walmart equipment.

Thank you for this video and great insight! I honestly have a GX2 and while it isn't the best looking and it's bulky/heavy I love it has been so dependable and strong but I wasn't a fan of the reel so I upgraded the reel and I actually use it for deeper water/bottom fishing for catfish and striper here in Arizona.

The gx2 combo can most certainly catch big fish. I love my combo. While not the best reel out there, I've caught some big pike with it and it performed much better than I thought it would.

  • @brenthaley3236

Great video. Very fair assessment and test for the gx2. I have fished and still fish ugly stik, light action, and ultralight action, old howald process rods. Those rods are heavier than the gx2 and the elite rods. But they perform great and are ultra tough, and reasonably sensitive.
My vote is that you don't try to break the rod. Just enjoy it for what it is meant to be, affordable and tough. You proved the toughness. Maybe one day you can read the history of the ugly stik and how they came to be and named. Interesting story.
Thanks so much for a more than fair test and opinion about the gx2.

Me and my dad still have a 19 year old Shakespeare and it still works and we are even able catch big cats and carps. We recently upgraded to another Shakespeare Tiger and it does deliver, it’s very reliable and strong. And we still use the 19 year old Shakespeare and it still doesn’t break on us.

Hey Capt. Joshua, You get a good workout with your feet and legs, why shouldn't you get one with your arms? Throw in the fish for dinner and you have a complete health day. Beats going to the gym! IF you want to prove a point, break (or try to) the rod. If not I think it would be nice if you took it to a place to shore fish and give it to a kid that has crud for a rod. You have proven it catches nice fish. Just a thought. Take care and Be Well guys! 🎣👍👍👍

The Ugly Stik GX2 is a very durable, dependable and reliable fishing rod. I recommend it to everyone. I own 3 in total because I like them so much… along with my Berkley Big Game Power Series rod. Great value and performance of these rods that will last you years and possibly decades especially if you take care of them, clean them, etc:
I have two 7 foot (1 piece) Ugly Stik GX2 rods. And the last one I own is Ugly Stik’s New: “Ugly Stik GX2 Custom” rod and I own the 7 foot (single piece) there are videos of guys catching 7 foot sharks, tarpon, tuna and even some guys in Texas (Catching Dinosaurs is their RUclips channel name) who have caught very large aligator gar (over 7 feet) on the Ugly Stik GX2.
The brand and rods provide Great value to their customers with the performance of these $49.99 dollar rods. My friend JUST snapped two $200+ fishing rods. The St. Croix Mojo Bass rod he just bought snapped at the tip when we were on the river. And this other “high end” signature rod (another $200+ rod) Shimano Tartula or something like that; my friend snagged on a thick weed when we were at the lake and the rod snapped at the base just a minute after he was slowly pulling out a weed.
I advised my friend. “Bro purchase at least 1 Ugly Stik GX2. They are only $49.99 and they are so much more stronger and durable. That snap trying to unsnag on that medium size weeds WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED LIKE THAT ON THE UGLY STIK GX2. It’s probably the best multi-species fishing rod out for sale.”
