How does the fluid get low and where does it go if it is a sealed container? thanks! great vid, had no idea about this but now I know I can check the level on mine!
axle seals leak at the hub/brakes....diff cover gasket is dry and cracked....diff pinion seal leaks....the seals are only as good as the gaskets...thats where you'll see the leaks and really the only places you should see any leaks.
Thanks for the video. Here in Australia we can only buy full synthetic oil 75W/140 which has the "additive" in it for lsd diffs. You said in your video that you don't have to use synthetic which would make sence to me as does also adding mopar diff additive. So can you please tell me what diff oil you used, brand, type etc and please clarify what grade of none synthetic oil to use? Our local Jeep dealer sells the original diff oil at $125aud per ltr so you can see why I ask. Thanks in advance Steve.
Hey, man! Great video - I like your "guy next door" style. The back n forth with your wife was great. Anyway….you mind a few questions? I'm new to all this but a fast learner and have become quite addicted to auto repair. I've got a 2002 WJ w Quadra Trac II. 1. Why can'y you suck old fluid out w pump and add new fluid to just top it off? 2. Can you use the black RTV stuff? That orange is ugly lol. Or a factory gasket? 3. The Friction Modifier is a must for front and rear w/ Quadra Trac !!? Thanks again for a great video….Oh! The test drive at the end was the best part! Cool how the camera turned as you drove.
+Steve Murwin well... for # 1, the metal particles/wear is removed when I pulled the cover but you can suck the old out and put new in....but you just bandaid any issues that may be there if you don't pull the cover to inspect yourself. 2 the orange was the higher temp stuff....I would've preferred a different colour/color too 3 for Quadra Trac II is a no. If you have quadra trac II you won't need the modifier as you won't have limited slip. This Jeep in the video runs the quadra drive 1 with varilock LSD front and rear diffs but shares the same transfer case as you have and they both run tranny fluid in the transfer case. lol...I wasn't sure the camera would stay on the drag link when I turned...I was watching out the back window most of the trip. Thx for watching, Nizz
Hey, Nizz - thanks for your reply!! I had watched a video of a guy using the "cheater" method, but after I watched it again, he said he only does it like that because he changes it more than needed. I'll do it the right way! Thanks again!!
Steve Murwin No problem. Glad you liked the videos. I have more videos coming but every time I start one lately my wife seems to need the car.....figures
+Steve Murwin Steve, I have discovered a really efficient way to care for my front and rear differentials. Order the G2 differential covers (I have the Dana 30 and Dana 35) along with a Lube Locker brand differential gasket for your front and rear covers. The G2's have both a fill hole and a drain hole so you can simply drain your differential fluid as opposed to removing the covers every time and having to full with RTV or a new gasket. Here is the rest of the equation, fill each differential with Royal Purple 75W-140 gear oil and you can EASILY go 50-60k between fluid changes
My mechanic has done the 2 diffs and transfer box! He used the wrong oil in transfer, car juddered turning! Proper friction oil now in transfer but still a little juddered! Can the diff have normal gear oil or do they need a specific oil?
@@terrystratford1235 I tend to wait for a sale and buy the stuff cheaper even if I don't need it yet...Gear oil is way to expensive to start with compared to other oils.
@@nizzlejr update for u! Not only my guy, but also jeep itself sold me freckin transfer box oil as diff oil!!!!!!!!!! No wonder it hates turning! Left more so! Now have 75w140 x drive, plus additive, from jeep! Who after I told them what they did, gave me 15%off the oil! Dropped car off to my mechanic last night, so everything crossed nothing is broken from me drivin it!? It would take the jeep guy to admit he remembered me sayin it was for the front diff! Fortunately I have the receipts, bits bought as I could afford them! And my guy( vat registered) has his book for front diff day after! But I just pray to the skys it will be all good!
Hey,at low rpm's such as goin from one traffic light to the next,my 04 Gran cherokee make single bumping noise as it down shifts from 2nd to 1rst...is this my prob?
unless I was there I couldn't say....but the rear ball joint on ours made a bump in stop and go traffic. Not sure what would cause yours beside tranny/motor mount on a down shift.
ya...I kinda use that stuff on a lot of things that have gunk build up. The brake cleaner evaporates so fast as it cleans the areas I can't get to with a rag that I've never been to concerned with it.
If it's making noise, be sure to turn a wheel while looking at your ring & pinion and spider gears to make sure there's no pitting or chipped teeth. Watch the spider gears for any wobble that might indicate a bent shaft too. Perfect opportunity to ensure everything is in working order. ✌
Good work.. Very cool video. Love the underside view as you drove away.
+David Smith Thank you....More videos soon....
I have to applaud your fortitude..this was very painful to watch..
You have earned two Advil and a beer
This video is horrendous....
I can't stop laughing long enough to retain any mechanical knowledge.....🤣
Got my sub!
Doesnt it have a gasket with it?,holy rtv batman....I mean I'm the rtv king but I bow to you sir...all hail the permatex king!!!
Can I simply add oil instead?
A clear hose, affixed to cap tip, makes life easy.
Pre - heat oil, in hot water, helps flow
Ohh man you helped me out with mine. i did it the same way as you, pinky finger and all. holy hell that top bolt is a pain
Glad this could help! Thanks for watching Anthony.

+Steve Medved The additive was bought at a local Jeep dealer and Diff fluid at Canadian Tire here....so it the companies brand of MotorMaster.

How many quarts of diff fluid do I need
I think it was 2 and a half plus that Chrysler posi fluid

You can use normal 75w90 with the additive I just prefer the synth.
@@nizzlejr I've the oil from jeep, 70w 140 I think it is+ the additive! But at £40.08 a liter I will look for a cheaper alternative next time!

so how many quartz of gear oil just up to the hole or?
+kelvin williams I just fill to the hole once I added Jeeps friction additive after the first quart. Only used a 1/4 quart to fill the rest.
My rn rubs my growth in her office. Shhhh dont tell anyone.
So is the quadratrac 2 a quadradrive?
nope....and yes....quadradrive adds limited slip front n rear...that's about it
do you have to add the friction modifier?
+arguijoeloy yes ya do
+nizzlejr
10-4 will do
+arguijoeloy thanks very helpful with the video
no problem and thank you for watching
yes...for the posi in the diffs to work properly
Is it safe to spray your diff with brake cleaner?
ya...I kinda use that stuff on a lot of things that have gunk build up. The brake cleaner evaporates so fast as it cleans the areas I can't get to with a rag that I've never been to concerned with it.
Whats the ticking noise?
ya....that noise has turned into a spun bearing...still lots O power though.
ok because I have to do mine it's making a little noise ,thanks
+kelvin williams no worries
