t happened at the Japan Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2004. A special super fight, between two of the greatest competitors ever. Fernando Terere (TT) was victorious over Marcelo Garcia (Alliance) in the IBJJF worlds finals a year before, submitting Marcelo with a triangle choke. This rematch was part of a special event in Japan, where Andre Galvao also competed as a brown belt.

Fernando Augusto, commonly known by his nickname Tererê is one of the most talented and charismatic Brazilian jiu jitsu competitors to have ever stepped on a mat. This multiple time world medallist became a black belt world champion at the age of 20, and was regarded as a Pound for Pound best during the early 2000’s. His impact in modern day jiu jitsu was felt in his development of positions such as the Toreando, the Leg Drag and many others while having great impact also as a coach, having helped raise the game of fighters such as André Galvao, Rubens Charles, Michael Langhi, Lucas Lepri, and mire; Diagnosed case of schizophrenia in 2005, an affliction that led him to drug addiction and away from jiu jitsu. He reappeared in BJJ in 2010, but his recovery was erratic and followed with a few ups and downs. Terere returned to jiu jitsu competition in Mexico on September 2012.
Marcelo Garcia also known as ‘Marcelinho’, is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Master Fabio Gurgel, who competes for the Alliance BJJ academy. Having won 5 world jiu jitsu tournaments and 4 times the ADCC (two of the most important tournaments in jiu jitsu), Garcia is widely considered one of the best grapplers in the world, while his general demeanor made him one of the most beloved athletes by the BJJ community. Marcelo Garcia has also been featured in BJJHeroes top 10 Best Grapplers of All Time list.

The single most important evolution to ever come to marcelo's single leg/x guard game came from this match. He misses the single leg x guard sit up sweep twice. Both times Terere was able to post his left hand, turn and flee the sweep. After this fight Marcelo began grabbing the far collar with the off hand. This prevents the opponent from fleeing the sweep. These are small details but if you are a true student of marcelo's evolution you will see that it changed from here out. Terere is my all time favorite player and his guard passing is the thing of legend. He tooled one of the greatest ever , not once but twice. It goes to show how strong alliance was. They both come from the same camp, only terere was an OG Alliance guy.

Fernando tererê augusto e Marcelo Garcia ,duas feras .

This is golden! Thank you for posting. Any footage I can find of Terere in his dominant years is a treasure indeed.
doninant in RUNNING!
Marcelo Garcia once lived at Terere’s gym . Worked and trained under him for awhile!
You're looking at 4 Gods and they are all from the Alliance Family! Carlos Gracie's the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu trained his son Rolls Gracie, who in turn trained Romero "Jacare" Calvacanti(Alliance Founder) Who in turn trained Fabio Gurgel who in turn trained Marcelo Garcia. Romero Calvacanti who trained Alexander Paiva, who in turn trained Fernando "Terere" Augusto De Silva, who in turn trained Andre Gavalo( However, Terere could not give Andre his Blackbelt due to being arrested in the United States for odd behavior on a plane, which subsequently uncovered that Terere was suffering from mental instability due to drug abuse) Note: Terere also trained under Gurgel for a time and Marcelo Garcia also trained under Terere for a while! That's some shit for you!
Nice to see another BJJ History buff in the house ;)

Feliz pelo respeito que nossos atletas do BJJ alcançaram no mundo todo. Do Japão aos USA.
This video is BJJ gold!
Indeed! Thanks for watching

Excellent
Wow, amazing skills. OSS !
Super long match. But great to watch.
Running out of bounds to stop a take down should be two points for the other guy.
Or sweeps, or submissions, or reversals, or...
and for delaying the match taking forever to fix the gi
That was pissing me off! He fought on the edge of the mat to have a quick exit.
Fighting on the edge of the mat mainly just shows that you’re scared to engage to be honest. Fixing this point system would be good for the sport so that people actually engage, if not than you need to get back in the gym to be honest.
@@TheDxbrown strategy
First I saw Marcelo under pressure. Defensive gems. This old gold school. Back when galvao was black belt dreaming. 🤙🏼
Terere also submitted Marcelo to win a world championship
How did this video hide from the Internet for so long? Unreal to see someone handle Marcelo like that...
more to come!
True, Terere really had his number back in the days! Can't think about anyone else around his own weight beating Marcelo this consistently..
Marcelo was not handled. He was not "the Marcelo" yet. Altough Terere is top notch bjj figther you can't compare him to Marcelo in terms of results and championships. That year Terere was on his prime that year. Marcelo was just starting his career and legacy.
Marcelo won adcc the year before this match, beating by a very good margin Renzo and tapping out Shaolin in 30 seconds or something among the other things, and Ibjjf worlds that very same year.. I agree that this wasn't his prime and "man handled" should be reserved for other kind of defeats rather than a respectable 4-0, but let's not say either he just started or something like he was a green to this level because it is clearly not true. He was already regarded as one of the best guys in the world.
two legends dude..
My god Terere was monster. You can see his game in Rodolfo or Andre. If he hadnt been addicted to drugs he would have been the most accomplished grappler of his generation ( in terms of medals etc etc). Legend
100% he did what many others didnt even know
This was a challenge match. Garcia used to train with Terere when Marcelo was training at his school for a while. Terere and Marcel are from the same system and they both trained under Gurgel
This is the bjj I love. Not 10 minutes of butt scooting, spaghetti legs and 20 counter-counter-counter-berimbolos in a row
The evolution of this sport today is visible, from the moment we watched this video.
Monstro 👏🏼👏🏼🥋🇧🇷
Why is does the camera angle change after a transition or a scramble? I cannot appreciate everything that happened.
You failed to state that at that time Andre Galvao was a brown belt under the aforementioned Fernando "Terere" Augusto De Silva. Also you should have mentioned, just to give the viewer a tad of insight that Marcelo Garcia before going to Fabio Gurgel used to train under Terere for a spell, if I'm correct he left Terere as he worked for him in the dojo also and then went to Gurgel, I'm sure it was in that order because Marcel stayed with Gurgel from that point on. Also, Terere trained with Gurgel for awhile. And Gurgel although under Romero Calvacanti did take time to train under Rickson for a spell.
Circle of Jiu-Jitsu Life!
Is that a young Andre Galvao in the background mat side?
High level match between to legends in their prime. This produced one of the best guard passes of all time, a spectacular weave to smash pass. 3:49

Terrere was such a god damn phenom prodigy.
He was the GOAT
O esporte evoluiu muito.
No matter how good you are...there's someone better
unless youre roger gracie :)
He's better in gi probably not in no gi. Garcia was much better in no gi than he was in gi. No gi was what he was so successful in in competing.
Roger beat both!
@@OGG619
Not impressive to see a much larger man defeat smaller men at wrestling. When Roger had to fight top 10 ranked guys his own size in MMA, it was a very different story. Size matters.👊
@@kobe51 he was decent in MMA..not impressive. Yet he still handled Randelman, Waterman and Anthony Smith. Not so great with Tim Kennedy. And although size does matter Roger was mainly all technique. Now if you’re going to compare Marcelo against guys that were bigger.. he did very well against him. And if you Apply that logic then shouldn’t he have beaten Roger? The point is that same skill set within two opponents then yes size will matter. But in the end Roger has a much more technical approach and these guys and that is why he is the GOAT.
I find this match extremely interesting given their past history and future career trajectory.
Terere still has MG's number and MG barely survives the early part of the match. But as the match progresses, we see Marcelo improving his defense and his counters getting sharper. He would have scored two sweeps had Terere not run out of bounds. The two are fairly evenly matched in the later part of the match, with Terere being superior on his feet but Marcelo perhaps threatening more sweeps from the guard.
Overall Terere won and his athleticism is unbelievable but Marcelo staying collected and eventually defusing his threats and passes is also super impressive. I'm a big Marcelo fan and his ability to improve his game while the match is progressing, when his body must be on fire all over, is one of his best qualities.
Who knows what would have happened in the third match.
I got bad news for you, even if they fight 10 more times Terere wins all of them !
@@CUNDUNDO Yes as he runs like a little bitch from MG........
Eddie Edmunds because terere had mental and drugs issues otherwise he would be greater than marcelo. Actually greater than everyone, his jiu jitsu is beyond our time, all of the great master of bjj say that.

were they former team mates? i did a little bit of research about Terere and it seems like he was a part of Alliance before they formed TT with Eduardo Telles.
Terere, Leo Vieira, and Cumprido all part of a devasting Alliance Team. All have their blackbelts under the Alliance Flag! In fact Marcelo used to train with Terere at his first school prior to going to Gurgel, they are good friends and that's why Terere knows Marcelo's game but let's not overlook that Terere is one of the top 20 Jiu-Jitsu fighters of all time. Terere (Fernando Augusto De Silva) won a world championship at every belt level that he was at from white belt to black!
Gurgel was alliance too
André Galvão novinho no canto assistindo. Terere na sua melhor fase
Terere, within my perceptions, will always have a place, well deserved, upon the ELITES, in the gi. Way to go, Terere!! For it seems you have Marcelo's number. And, of course, much respect, as always, unto the Marcelo...for he's, indeed, one of the ELITES.
It's a great shame his career was broken by personal problems. He was an exceptional talent. I actually attended a seminar with him a few years back (in London). This was after his first recovery, when he was getting back in shape.
@@vibovitold We all have our vices(bad habits/moral weaknesses), some just hide there's better; I'm just happy to know he's, now, doing well.
I bet the seminar was "AWESOME"; I wish I could have attended.

Say no to Schedule I
This is the best he had ever looked again Terrere. He showed great maturity and growth. He should've got 2 for Terrere going out of bounds to avoid that sweep.
10:00 sweep is genius. They battle for grip on Marcello's right side (as happened earlier in the match as well), but this time MC doesnt let Fernando establish one, and jerks into the sweep with lightning speed right in the moment Fernando moves from one grip attempt to the other. Otherwise the sweep fails. omg i watched it again, and i'm pretty sure Fernando gripping at the chest triggered Marcello's sweep. The chest raising will raise the hand and posture of Fernando, where a lower grip would anchor him down . So good.
Amadis Demitrius Fahk. I can't see any of that 😂
It's interesting that you can trace back most sport bjj innovations of the last 20 years to 2 people who are competing here. Especially tereres passing game and Marcelo butterfly/x guards/arm drags/high elbow guillotine.

Terere was 10 years ahead of his time when it came to passing guard. He had it all. Folding pass, Cradlle pass, toreando, leg drag, backstepping. He was doing things Guys nowadays do instructionals about. Amazing.
I always felt that if Terere and Damien Mia were maybe 10lbs heavier they would have defeated Roger Gracie.

Com todo respeito! Tererê passou o carro. Depois passou o carro mais uma vez. Aí passou denovo e denovo! Brincou!
He was tired and ran the last half of the match. Good strategy I suppose because it got him the w but I prefer to see people go for the submission

I dont see the “running away “ at all, he let marcelo get grips and pull guard a number of times
LMFAO GET YOUR EYES CHECKED SON................
Why are some in the comments trying to discredit terere's win ? I see that alot.
Because of his skin color, more than likely. I notice a lot of negative comments for both Jacare and Terere despite their achievements and relatively few negative comments for the white grapplers. Tribalism is a thing. Most of the posters on BJJ videos are white anyway, if that is a clue.
@@kobe51 On the nosey.
wow tats uts that he beat him
Andre Galvao watching as well. Lol
LOL THATS ACTUALLY MY NAME MARCELO GARCIA
Marcelo Garcia the best of all time but Terere in this time ARGH !!!!!
Marcelo actually trained with Terere before going to Gurgel, that's why Terere is so relaxed in this fight, he knows Marcelo's moves in and out! Andre Galvao at this time was a brown belt under Terere before the airplane incident which ended up getting Terere incarcerated and not available to give Galvao his blackbelt. Als Ruben Charles is also a blackbelt under Fernando Terere Augosto De Silva
@@vincespell yep !!
The ref fixing the kimono for Terere is extremely stupid. If you get your kimono pulled of and wrapped around your head, well that seems like a problem you'd have to solve in a fight.
Boring but commentators were spot on
Know why there's no hung fu, wing chung or akido championships? cuz it doesnt work if the other guy is actually trying.
very good point
Two Marcelo advantages never exists
please explain?
Advantage only counts when your opponent put the back on the floor. On both sweeps attempts that did not happens. Well you can argue that on the first attempt Terere run of the mat. I’m my interpretation he just kick the leg out, with is a valide escape. Unfortunately the mat finished. So technically it’s not count as running of mats.

Kkkkk

Marcelo won in 1 5 MINUTE but That guy keep try to touch the white line
Terere ran away half of the match.
We know what you just said was very effective in the fight but I wouldn't pay my money to see this I would rather see two guys standing up total toll bare-knuckle throwing kicks and punches. That's a real fight
Marcelo would have won Gi-less match for sure!
dude, Garcia was rather one dimensional here. the skillset looked its age, very primitive
I dont think saying one dimensional is appropriate. Marcelo is anything but that. However, Terere was just better in this match and chose the right techniques and strategies to win
