Hello from Florida. Glad to see you again. I can not believe that I found your own channel. Great content as always. I’m finally doing my open water certification (postponed from March) and you can not imagine how much have you helped me from gear recommendations to general advise. I don feel completely clueless when I go to de dive shop.
Upgraded to a Suunto EON Steel from watch computer. Got a great deal on computer with POD. Can't afford, and will never need, a Shearwater. Suunto apps are unbelievably easy to set up and navigate. Still use my SPG in case POD fails. Also, I just plug it in to charge vs Perdix which crack case to change battery. Battery seal is a big failure point for an expensive investment.
Got Suunto Eon Core and could not be more happy! I realised majority of scubadivers are kinda like kids and go for stuff that just has more bels and whistles while they dont need or use 90% of it (looking at you Perdix) . I find that Eon Core is best middle of the road one.
I'm with you on the under-appreciated dive gear video. I've got the OSTC myself (and I'm not in Germany) and I'm a little puzzled on the whole "Difficult to get in some countries". Does that translate to "You cannot walk into a dive shop and walk out with the dive computer in hand" Even at the time of making this video I'm quite sure most people know what online shopping is all about so it's just a cost and time factor.
Would love you to do a review of the Ratio ix3m tech pro, especially screen size as my sight struggles with small screens and nothing out there on screen size
I wear glasses and trying to see my old Aqualung i200 was hard in the dark and dingy Stoney cove. So I upgraded to the Eon core and I love it. So clear and simple to use

Well this helped me make up my mind exactly none... I am thinking about upgrading my Suunto D4. I'm a bit of a technology geek so was going to go to air integrated for sure and all the extra data the G2 has look impressive. I had narrowed my list to the Perdix AI, EON Core, or the G2.... All 3 are in the same general price range. Just having such a small manual the Perdix looks to be the easiest; the G2 has the most data you can see; and the EON is sticking with the brand I started with... Being in Michigan I'm going to be looking at diving wrecks in the area (not penetration dives just yet) and that puts me on the deeper end of rec dives and do dive with a pony bottle part of the time and will probably put a transmitter on it as well. Also I'm in Michigan so there will be gloves, but I don't see a major difference is easy of button use. I'm hoping other commenters might have some input other than the nearly religious answers on SB...
You do tend to fall into brand allegiance with computers on message boards... Personally, I like Shearwater for their UI, Scubapro are fairly no-nonsense and straightforward as are the EON range. The G2 gives you the option of Heart Rate and Skin Temperature monitoring which is very rare. At the end of the day they'll all get you back to the surface safely
Diving with Garmin MK1. Very few people actually have even seen the model in South East Asia. They have just launch a software update v10.10 on july2020, but never got to test it out as mine is a SEA version. SEA still running on v8.00 as of comment time. if you ever plan to get it, please to read the forum, they still have minor bugs and fixes that needs to be done. One that bugs me was that i cannot add additional surface interval(right after accending from one) to directly calculate my next dive NDL. Garmin mention that it is fixed in v10.10. #fingerscrossed it is a sure recommendation if you are looking for a all rounder tracking + diver ,as the GPS also allows for recording lots and lots of outdoor activities, I do a lot of jogs on normal days, it is a breeze to track that jog. Battery life is around a week with all features turn on (no notifications-i hate my wrist vibrating every now and then), and i do around 1hr activities throughout that week.
Hey welcome back! Glad I found you again. Personally I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Teric. Great DC and nice form factor. While I love the air integration I still use an old fashioned SPG as a backup to ensure I know how much gas I have left!
Take a look at the veo 4.0,also a pelagic and almost identical to the i300c, but with an extra gas and two algorithm options, at face value they look identical til you dig.
Woo hoo! I finally have some gear on a top 5 list! The i300c is great for a newbie diver like myself. Simple but very intuitive to use. Would love if you could do a video about your favorite specialty courses... which ones really help to improve your diving?
A very underrated dive computer. Yeah, I can look at specialities, there are definitely some that you can skip and others that are better at making you a better diver...
Do you have any thoughts on the Scubapro Aladin A2? I'm brand new to diving and looking to buy my first dive computer. It seems like a good balance of being not quite as expensive but still having some good features like air integration. I also like how it has sport mode so it used for other things like swimming.
Yeah I like the A2, I got to play with one a while back. As you say, it ticks all of the boxes you need for everything from freediving to CCR. One thing it does do over many other computers is connect to a Heart Rate Monitor which is very cool.
I started with the mares quad, pretty fine for me I think the mares quad air has now the same price for like 250€ @safe diving what do you think about the mares quad ?
I went with a mares quad air pro for my computer. Haven’t been able to get it wet, but it seems to be a simple computer to operate. I almost went with the descent mk1, but decided to go with something with air integration instead
Hiya Mark , took YT Algorythm months to hint about where you´re hiding at , just a quick personal experience on the G2 after about 150ish dives , quite a few Software issues , Connection to PC and Mobile App , plus more and more often , stays in dive mode for hours after surfacing , been sent off for a factory reset , hope they get it sussed , cos i couldn´t find an AI with HM etc, which was the main reason for going for it last year ... anyway , have subscribed as well
I suppose it would be amazing if anybody released a Dive Computer that never went wrong for anybody, luck of the draw... Good luck with yours though, hopefully you're not without it for too long
@@SafeDiving Cheers mate , was probably one of the first out , but the dealer just sent me a suunto core with transmitter for the duration of the repair , was otherwise very satisfied underwater with the G2
Hi Mark, congratulations for your channel, I've missed your videos since Simple Scuba's ones, so I am very happy to find you again. I am lucky enough to dive with a Perdix and I love it, but really do not want to spend as much again for my wife, who wants an upgrade for her Cressi. Do you know any more affordable alternatives that displays SAC rate while diving?, I think it is one of the most useful features of an air integrated computer. Thanks!
Computers that actually display real-time SAC / RMV are pretty rare. The Suunto EON Core is the cheapest that I can think of that can actually display it during the dive, they just call it "consumption".
Both good computers. The G2 has HFD inside, so you can connect it to a HRM to tailor your dive profile. The Perdix has it's reputation for a reason, it's a great computer. I'd be very happy diving with either of those choices
@@SafeDiving Thanks for your response. So it‘s going to be the G2, as I‘m already used to the functions, menus and what not. Plus taking human factor into account.
Shewrwater Teric! Thst being said, love Scuba pro's innovation. I want a heart rate monitor to sync to my health apps and provide caloric details while learning more about how hot/cold etc I am.
Thank you Mark, these are a great format of videos, I only wish I found them sooner, I was missing my fix of Simply Scuba ones! Please can we have the computers not to get?
Great video Mark. I'm very happy with my Suunto Eon Core. Really enjoying the Safe Diving channel. Could you maybe do a video on the best prescription masks? Thanks.
Hey Mark, really like the channel and am getting psyched up for getting back to diving when the situation allows. I'm a recreational diver and suspect I'm unlikely to go down the tech route (although never say never...) I had been considering the suunto D5 but watching this and the simplyscuba video of the core I'm not so sure - is there much between them other than screen size and general bulk on wrist? Does that significantly affect the use on the dive? I'd thought perhaps a watch sized computer would be good for diving holidays to have on more permanently but ultimately if it's not as good when underwater doing it's primary job then that's not ideal or is it mainly a personal preference thing? Also would love to see the worst computers video!
For many years, even teaching, I used a watch-sized computer. Right now I prefer a large screen, just so the information is clearer. Both the Core and the D5 are probably the easiest computers I've played with to navigate and understand. If you'll be diving with chunky gloves then the D5 may be a bit fiddly because the buttons are a bit close together. If you're diving in warm waters then it's just down to personal preference really, you'll get the same information out of both on a dive.
@@SafeDiving thanks for the reply. I am going to do more diving in the UK when I can so will almost certainly need decent gloves! But also want something I can take to more tropical waters as well. That's given me something to think about. Cheers Mark
Either way, you'll be fine. They're both lovely computers. Just double check the D5 comes with an extension strap to go over a thick wetsuit or drysuit. Suunto have been changing what comes with some of their computers this season...
I’m looking for a dive computer with ai. I’m also really into the idea of having a gps in the watch which I can only seem to find in the garmin series. I’ve been looking at the g2 as well and heard there is a type of gps in that watch which isn’t as automatic as the garmin gps. Any help with this?
I like the Peregrine, it's going to dominate the dive computer market in its price range because of the quality. They've stripped out all of the serious technical parts that most recreational divers don't use and fitted the bottoms from the Teric and have made a very nice colour screen dive computer. Only thing that I don't like about it is that they didn't add wireless integration into it as a recreational computer...
I've got a eon core. Can't fault it but I do wonder whether using something like shearwater that hasn't got a proprietary algorithms is safer. When do you think they've be updating the perdix?
Trying to decide between the Garmin MK2 should it feature all the bells and whistles of the MK1 with the much desired component of air integration. (No idea why Garmin would release a computer in that price point without air integration) and a Sunnto eon core. What I like about the Garmin (huge assumption it is similar to mk1 +AI): surface and exit gps recording, the quality, and ease of use. What I like about the suunto: all the needed information is on screen at once, ease of use, and appearance. Both are computers that will grow with me as I progress from Advanced Open Water to Divemaster/instructor goals. Any insights into which computer one should get?
They're both great computers so you won't be disappointed... I've heard rumour of a free transmitter offer for the EON Core soon so you can save yourself some money, here in the UK at least, I don't know if the offer is global... Ive dived the Core and it is a lovely computer for all level of diver. The MK2 is nice too but I do worry about Garmin's aftercare...
Nice video , good info I’m currently using the sunto zoop novo but am looking to upgrade , was drawn to the sunto eon ,as I like big colour screen , or would you suggest shearwater perdix ?
For recreational diving either would be great, but if you ever plan to move to serious technical diving then I'd go for the Shearwater. The Suunto is a bit more pleasing to look at, with colourful pie charts, whereas the Shearwater is more about plain numbers.
1st and 2nd Cosmiqs I ever saw both rattled because something had broken inside getting them out of the packaging. They effectively forced us to film a video on the Cosmiq by sending us samples and then called every single day until we uploaded something. Terrible computer.
Hi Mark. Good information on this channel. One thing that I don’t understand of the i300c is the multi gas feature. If the manual indicates that the computer is for recreational dives only, why having three different gas to switch to during the dive? I would imagine that this feature helps but on deco dives, Keep up the good work
I'd probably use it more for convenience. Set one gas for 21%, one for 30% and one for 32%. That way when you test your nitrox you don't have to type in your gas, just select which. But not switch in the water...
When I checked I find them a tad pricey, a specially the Perdix, even though I believe you get your money’s worth, but 13 and a half thousand Swedish kroner for the Perdix2, that’s 975 + Pounds in today’s exchange rate, is a lot of money. Then again, no one said scuba diving was inexpensive😂
I'm so confused over here.. I like the Garmin Descent .. But I would love to know if they are going to build us a second gen Dive Computer.. I don't want to buy MK1 and after a month they release a new one
Yeah, there are rumours of an air integrated Garmin computer seen on dive boats. If things go well, we'll probably see it this side of Xmas. If it needs work they may shelve it until next year...
Don't be ashamed to buy slightly older model of shearwater petrel. I have been using it for single tank and mixed gasses! It does everything you need other than read tank pressure, but realistically it's not a must have option!
im having a hard time deciding between the EON core or the shearwater Perdix AI... I want a dive computer that'll grow with me which they both can but will also be used in more advance diving (cave, technical, ect I think you get it) im not sure which to go with. if anyone has any opinions thoughts or plan can just help with pros cons anything please feel free to help!
For me, and anybody else can chime in, I prefer the Shearwater because you can customise and change more things, even when submerged, which is better for technical diving. But you're doing the right thing by asking around for opinions.
@@SafeDiving so you can't change things with the EON while submerged? reading I thought it said you could change once diving?, I watched every single video I could find on both computers while shearwaters is full customizable (I like that) , i tend to lean to the EON for its bold colorful numbers and simplistic info. my kinda biggest worry with the shearwater is the user changeable battery. you could flood the entire system and have a paper weight? have you heard of shearwater computers breaking? I just never heard of shearwater before and suddenly they're hoping up here and there so its kinda a trust thing....
they may have changed the software since I last dived it. You can set the Perdix to a recreational setup with large colourful numbers if you like but don't rush into things. I like the idea of a built in battery but bear in mind how many charge cycles you can get out of the battery. DiveSaga has a good story about their Perdix flooding that's worth a watch: ruclips.net/video/Z6MnBUy-YNI/видео.html
@@SafeDiving first I gotta say thank you, your really helping me out. it surprised me they just replaced his system. have you used the AI ? how reliable is it? the more I look into a more expensive computer (iv only ever used Cressi Leonardo) the more I tend to lean towards Perdix, tho I think the eye grabbing goes to eon. but im looking for function.. not cosmetics.
This is what Instructors do and what we're here for. Yeah the AI works just fine. Just know that you can connect to any Pelagic Transmitter, not just the Shearwater Transmitter. So an AquaLung or Oceanic Transmitter will work with a Perdix. AquaLung owns Pelagic right now so AquaLung Transmitters tend to be the cheapest, but they're all the same on the inside
The Cobalt's a nice dive computer. Very easy to use. I'm not a fan of integrated dive computers because if the battery runs out or it floods then you loose everything. If you're buying one second hand ask if the buttons have been updated. The older version could rust so they issued an update.
Safe Diving I purchased a new Cobalt I computer off of eBay (cheap) as my secondary backup computer, but it was the old model which had never been used/sold. I spoke with Atomic, and was told that once the software had been upgraded, it was the same as the newer Cobalt II. I wanted a computer that had hosed air integration and was planning on purchasing a wrist style air integrated as my primary. However, I didn’t think ahead enough about the differences in algorithms of the two computers, and now do not know which to buy (was thinking of the Shearwater Teric). What do you recommend that would be as compatible as possible?
If you want a dive computer to wear every day as a watch then the Descent, the Descent is far more customisable and has lots of extra features like HR and GPS, but isn't as focussed on scuba diving. But if you want a more serious dive computer then the Teric. Also bear in mind that the MK2 is very close to being released and support for the MK1 seems to be little to none now, so you won't get many software upgrades if you buy a MK1
The DX was a good dive computer. It's discontinued now, so finding a new one might be tricky. The D-Range was always easy to understand and use, and the partial dot-matrix screen was easy to read. The Fused RGBM was a good algorithm for deeper diving The DX was fairly chunky on your wrist for day to day use but it was a solid dive computer for a range of uses
I am very disappointed that you didn't include dive computers made by Ratio Computers that are among the best in the world in terms of features, quality and versatility. Ratio computers are more deserving of mention and review than most of the ones that you mentioned.
@@BurhanMuntasser They may be available in North America but certainly not easy to find to even try on for fit. Also slightly off-putting if they have to be sent back to Italy for any issues.
While the Shearwater Perdix is great, there are feature to the Teric that may drive me to it rather then the Perdix, including the contactless charging, sealed battery, Sapphire Glass, and of course the color options - my only complaint would be the screen size. Would love to see a true trade off of the two.
I have Perdix AI and Girlfriend has Teric, so in good position to comment. I prefer changeable battery (easy to replace AA available worldwide). She loves watch size for her small wrists. Colours are changeable on Perdix, Green Blue Cyan White Grey Red Pink (more like lilac) Yellow is reserved for warnings.
Mark Sallows I was speaking of the colors of the computer itself, not the text on the display. But color is only one feature, how about the resolution of that text.
Kenneth Wayne Nolen - don’t get me wrong, I love the Teric to and a user replaceable battery was obviously not an option, due to the watch format. Not a deciding factor for me, but Teric is more expensive. My girlfriend bought hers used off our club course director, but we discovered battery was draining too fast and Shearwater replaced entire computer with brand new one. We had replacement one week later. Amazing support if you ask me!
Safe Diving At first I thought I might have made a boo boo after purchasing it as it seemed a little over weighted but after I played with the mounting arm I find it very comfortable. I just dove it yesterday and today another fantastic run.

Great info as always. Thanks for sharing.
I’m looking for a dive computer with ai. I’m also really into the idea of having a gps in the watch which I can only seem to find in the garmin series. I’ve been looking at the g2 as well and heard there is a type of gps in that watch which isn’t as automatic as the garmin gps. Any help with this?
i know you recorded this viideo than the realease date of the Shearwater peregrine, but what do you think about it ? who would you recomend that to. ?
I like the Peregrine, it's going to dominate the dive computer market in its price range because of the quality.
They've stripped out all of the serious technical parts that most recreational divers don't use and fitted the bottoms from the Teric and have made a very nice colour screen dive computer.
Only thing that I don't like about it is that they didn't add wireless integration into it as a recreational computer...
I have had two disasters with the Suunto Zoop (it dives itself on land). A review on a trusted DC for recreation divers would really help.
I've got a eon core. Can't fault it but I do wonder whether using something like shearwater that hasn't got a proprietary algorithms is safer. When do you think they've be updating the perdix?
Perdix is great for CCR and heavy tech diving (from my research) but have to crack case to change battery.
Good to see you again Mark. How's life (Corona) been treating you.
I looking to buy my first computer. I between aqualung i300c and oceanic geo 4... do you have any knowledge to share about it:? !
10:37 computers
Deepblu cosmiq
Nerd 2
(Im not too sure about this one) Cressi Drake
Just in case your were wondering
Nice video , good info I’m currently using the sunto zoop novo but am looking to upgrade , was drawn to the sunto eon ,as I like big colour screen , or would you suggest shearwater perdix ?
For recreational diving either would be great, but if you ever plan to move to serious technical diving then I'd go for the Shearwater.
The Suunto is a bit more pleasing to look at, with colourful pie charts, whereas the Shearwater is more about plain numbers.
Would love to know the difference between the Perdix and Perdix AI?
Oceanic oci with a transmitter. Your thoughts.?
Thoughts on suunto d5?
Please, please, please do the bad computers. :)
Actually its a good idea but you get copyright striked instantly because brands don't like to be called out on bs.
1st and 2nd Cosmiqs I ever saw both rattled because something had broken inside getting them out of the packaging.
They effectively forced us to film a video on the Cosmiq by sending us samples and then called every single day until we uploaded something.
Terrible computer.
I like the OSTC computers from heinrich’s weikamp.
Hi Mark. Good information on this channel. One thing that I don’t understand of the i300c is the multi gas feature. If the manual indicates that the computer is for recreational dives only, why having three different gas to switch to during the dive? I would imagine that this feature helps but on deco dives,
Keep up the good work
I'd probably use it more for convenience.
What do you think of the Atomic Cobalt?
Was torn between teric and descent, any suggestion?
If you want a dive computer to wear every day as a watch then the Descent, the Descent is far more customisable and has lots of extra features like HR and GPS, but isn't as focussed on scuba diving.
But if you want a more serious dive computer then the Teric.
Also bear in mind that the MK2 is very close to being released and support for the MK1 seems to be little to none now, so you won't get many software upgrades if you buy a MK1
Can you please talk about the sunnto DX
The DX was a good dive computer. It's discontinued now, so finding a new one might be tricky.
The D-Range was always easy to understand and use, and the partial dot-matrix screen was easy to read. The Fused RGBM was a good algorithm for deeper diving
The DX was fairly chunky on your wrist for day to day use but it was a solid dive computer for a range of uses
Was the black shadow of one of the units you didn't like the DeepBlue?
Yes, the first two they sent us rattled with something loose on the inside of the computer.
They weren't the easiest to understand neither...
Not a fan of Suunto cause I had 2 Cobras fail and Too Time Restrictive!
Teric. Love it.
so is the simply scuba channel no longer a thing?
Definatly do the bad computers and the non mainstream ones.
Also, “simply scuba days”? Are you no longer with them?
Nah, I still work at Simply, we're just furloughed right now so I can't do any filming for them.
Oh yes, please tell us your dislikes (and therefor what to avoid in a computer!)
I am very disappointed that you didn't include dive computers made by Ratio Computers that are among the best in the world in terms of features, quality and versatility. Ratio computers are more deserving of mention and review than most of the ones that you mentioned.
Yeah, I took global availability into account. Ratio aren't as well established in many countries as other brands yet.
@@SafeDiving They are available in all of Europe, North America, Asia and even here in sunny hot Libya where I am now :)
Also, I currently have an Atomic Cobalt II, and I am looking to make it my secondary but want a primary that the algorithm with be compatible with.
Kenneth Wayne Nolen - amazing resolution and of course larger text for those with vision difficulties.
Shearwater Perdix AI
Mares nemo wide.
NERD 2 OC
I love the NERD for rebreathers but thought it may be heavy for open circuit. How do you find it?
Safe Diving At first I thought I might have made a boo boo after purchasing it as it seemed a little over weighted but after I played with the mounting arm I find it very comfortable. I just dove it yesterday and today another fantastic run.
Slow down 🙄
