I got a chance to demo ride the PA and it is one impressive machine! Very well balanced and easy to ride. I loved the fact I could flat foot the bike from the get go. Plenty of power, very comfortable and an overall very, very good effort from HD.
Oh man.. If you want to chose between a triumph tiger or Africa twin or a GSA .. It's in there. Toss in that Moto Guzzi 850TT and travel model. I guess it's an option over a Yamaha FJ 1300 sports touring bike. My dad has the pig Yamaha 1300😂
Off road....the weight of that bike will make you work for it. My Super T was about the same weight....always good riding with friends that will help you lift if back up. The cost of these big adventure bikes stick in the back of your mind when you decide it’s time to lay it down on the set of rock step ups & hope there is no damage done. The Harley is a nice looking bike & I believe it will do well....just need to know the bikes & your limits. Vaguyver out.
AMAZING, I had t subscribe to your channel...We are some much alike, everything you said is absolutely correct and as you say...you with experience, DO NOT need to ride to know... Excellent PROS-CONS, excellent video...
As the old saying goes, it is what it is. For the rider who is doing primarily on rode riding say 80% of the time with the occasional dirt road with the worst case being a smooth gravel road, these are the people who will love this bike! People who use streets to get to dirt roads & single tracks, just don’t even think about it. As you said it’s a big fat pig & if you know your potential is to drop it, not only is it going to be expensive to fix, but good luck getting it back up without hurting yourself! Love your videos 690 ADV. please keep it up!!!!
It's an adventure (category) bike not a dualsport. It matches or beats the BMW in all the specs( plus or minus slightly here & there), if I wanted a new 'adventure' bike I would get it if only because it's original but I would probably rather have a first Gen GS in my income bracket & for real adventure will stick with my dualsport which to me is just (barely) big enough for expressway running & just (barely) light enough to pick up on an off camber uphill drop. Maybe someday they can have a lighter scrambler version Ala Triumph on this same platform. Batman
Look at all the views brother 👍 great job Joe! And continue the great info👍We all like a certain type of bike. Appreciate your ideas too. Saw his video Tex .. I think his😂
The best comparison I can give is it's very similar to a Moto Guzzi V85 TT as I mentioned in the video. See the possiblly of electrical problems in the first generation. ADV bikes and lots of electron aides don't usually equal a lot of reliability. IE 1290 super adventure for one. And you know I'm about as orange as you can get now that I've had a taste of that colored Kool-Aide... 😁 Main reason I took it out was I was courious on how the naked bike might compair to a 1290 super duke. While it was fun "HDs new 1250" I don't think it's even in the same Continent as the Super Duke.. PS when are u gonna let us know if your hitting the trail w us Memorial weekend. Got a special route just for you!!! 😳
Honestly, I think its going to be the best middle ground between the massive, (and personally ugly) BMW and the bit more off road worthy KTM. I haven't ridden it of course but many are saying it feels much narrower than the BMW and the KTM and that is why I would never even consider the BMW. Bottom line is its a big bike in the big bike class, but its one if the lightest wet weights (which is all that matters) and thats very important. As for the reliability of Harleys, you are sorely mistaken, it is extremely common for them to go WELL over 100,000 miles on the original engine, and I've personally seen a bagger with over 600,000 miles on the original engine!! They actually build EXTREMELY reliable engines. Watch the videos of real testing, most say they expected it to bottom out constantly and it never did, or only like once, in an all day rough off road test. I truly think its going to REALLY take a dent out of both BMW as well as KTM. Only time will tell, its is a FIRMLY competitive bike in the big bike class, you can't compare it to a 690 bottom line.
500 cc or less is more realistic for true off road riding.Sure, there are professional off road riders that can do amazing things with big heavy adventure bikes, but not the average rider.Factor in the cost(who wants to drop a $22k motorcycle),and this bike would live better on tarmac,or the occasional dirt/fire road.
lol, remind me to come back tomorrow and read comments. this will be fun. I hear what you're saying. But for those shopping for big bikes (Triumph/KTM/BMW/BMW/BMW...) how does it fit in? I think the GS runs over 20K. It's 500lbs+ (i think), over $20K (I think), ground clearance...probably close to the same. So, what Edwin A says below, it is what it is. If i wanted a big bike (I don't) to cruise all over the USA, the PA might be a good choice. Get some pats on the back in the wild west for riding a 'Merican bike. It's biggest pro might be that it's not a BMW. For some. If i were traveling around the world, or another continent, the get the BMW. (or one of the other bikes). Ride the PA in the US (close to a dealership). Anyway, it's not a dual sport bike. just a dirt capable cruiser. any bike is an adventure bike, just make sure the bike is sort of suited for the trip. With a heavy bike you'll leave base camp looking like PeeWee Herman, and return like The Rock. Hmmm, that would be a pro...
First off, its not a dirt bike. Second off, the numbers for the Pan American are quite good for a heavyweight adventure bike. You mentioned a couple cons. Ground clearance; at 7.5 inches is not that far off from the BMW R 1250 GS at 7.9 inches. You mentioned price; cost of the base Pan American is $500 under the base GS. You mentioned weight; at 534 lbs you are a full 15 lbs lighter than the base GS. I'm not saying you are wrong, I am simply saying that an apples to apples discussion should not be a 15 minute pessimistic discussion about why a Pan American is not a KTM790.
@@690ADV I simply pointed out that your cons were non players if you compared the bike to its direct competitors. Followed by three examples you mentioned in your review. Perhaps listening is not the issue.
@@moto-minimalist8196 no I didn’t, the cons were for riders to be aware of if they have never owned an adv bike and will want to consider and think about. I know what I said I made it.
Joe - a couple of thoughts & My humble opinions: This would not be a good bike for ANY new rider. 20 freakin Grand - NO FREAKIN WAY. With that weight & ground clearance - This bike barely gets into the Adventure Category - and like you said, this is no where near a DUAL SPORT bike. Unlike THE MIGHTY SUZUKI DR 650 - Which is freakin "Bullet Proof" - with this new motor - I wouldn't be doing ANY "real" Adventure Riding - and once again, I totally agree with you - (OBI-WAN terminology) Harley's are pieces of shit. 99% of the ones I see - nothing but duct tape & bubble gum. Sorry to be so longwinded - Short version: The "Cons'" completely wipe out the "Pro's" - and definitely not my style - But man do I love your information. If I ever see one on the road - I'll wheelie past him knowing he just blew 20 grand hoping he can make it to Star Bucks LOL...
Most of the people who can afford that bike are not even going to take it off road. Possibly they will go down the gravel dirt road and that’s about it
So you didn’t put the legwork into actually riding it? I can get the same information from the internet you can, not going to waste my time watching the rest.
You lost a sub. Not a Harley fan at all but to claim you can tell how something rides by it’s numbers on paper and other peoples reviews is a bit of a cop out. I’ve spent the last almost 20 years reviewing a variety of products professionally. It feels like you’re talking to a group that is not the target audience for this bike. Not meant to be an insult or anything. I hope you view it as the constructive feedback it’s meant to be. Shiny side up and safe riding, Joe

I’d rather have something 100 pounds lighter. The KTM 890, Husqvarna 901 or the T7 is more interesting to me.
