  • Join my British Pronunciation Course: www.etjenglish...
Today we're learning better ways of responding to "how are you?" with perfect British pronunciation and intonation. So many of my students only know "I'm good" and "I'm fine" - but are these the most common things for natives to say? Let's find out!
Remember, you don't NEED an RP British accent to speak English well... There are loads of accents out there! I'm just here to help people who have a love for modern versions of RP.

A lot of times when "How are you" is asked, the person asking doesn't actually expect an in-depth response. This is especially true in the scenario you've just described. "Good. You?" would suffice. They don't really care. It's just automatic for them.

just carry on shopping when they ask this and respond with an answer its more a greeting than the fact they care how you are.

You know what brought me here? I am a dental specialist resident, specialising in rehabilitating patients with intraoral defects, leading to speech dysfunction (apart from myriads of other problems). I was searching articles related to my research on this topic, and youtube suggested me your videos. I can see why, because you talk about pronunciation and how tongue plays a large role in it. Let's take a moment to thank God for every muscle, bone and nerve that allows us to function, speak and communicate without even realising.

Hahaha, I'm from America and when people ask me how I'm doing, I reply with "Not bad, and you?" Or "Not bad, how about you?" Which means to me or at least how I mean it or how I assume they will take it, "I'm not too bad but not too good either". And most people do take it like that because they usually respond back with "Awww, I hope everything gets better" or "Oh, well I hope the rest of your day goes better than it started out" then we will usually both say "Thanks, have a good day". But that's just me and most of the people in my immediate area. Most other people will respond to "How are you?" With " Good and you?" Or something like that. By the way, I'm from South Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, America. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this subject, you seem to really know what you're talking about so I'm sure that people learn a lot from your courses. I know I certainly did, so again, thank you. I didn't really need it but it's always interesting to me to learn how other countries, states and different regions or areas in general speak.

Very charming presentation, and also very informative. I originate from Lancashire so it gives me an insight into the the southern English method of expression. While Lancashire is less taciturn than Yorkshire I feel we still sound a little unfriendly (monotone speech) to other counties. So this tutorial really helped me to see how intonation affects meaning.

When you answer "I'm sweet" to non native speaker, don't forget to explain where you've got it. Cause I'm sure they will paint the whole unexpected picture about you.

Back at school we were taught that "not bad" means stioc response to some catastrophy happening in a person's life: that either the person is dying or some of his relatives, so I tried to avoid it by all means))

Ohhhh Elliott, i love this topic, even that's a part of my daily practice, I'm still so confused about that...thank you for sharing!! if people just say "you alright" briefly and pass over quickly or not see me (feel like one word, meaning "hi"?), how do we respond? do we have one word to respond to? like "good" ? or we still say "yeah, not bad"?

It's very useful for me. I face this problem when my teacher asks me. I always respond by '"I'm fine".

Hi, this is a useful video.
I would like to learn about the British English small talk in daily life. If you could make a video series that will be of a great help. Anticipated thanks.
