My dad said he was a roadie for Huey Lewis and the News back when they started. Had all the albums and his favorite song was "Walking On A Thin Line". I think he would be excited about the musical if he were still alive.
Fresh out of USAF basic training, 1983 I saw Huey & t News Shepard Airman’s club… boiling hot show. I was 3ft. away, handed Huey my beer -he slammed it and said “thanks man” then kept rockin’
Glad to see Huey out and about. I never would have guessed he would do an interview considering his hearing loss and the affect it had on his life. A wonderful surprise. And nice interview.
I’m glad he mentioned Starkey hearing aides. Bill Austin, who started the company, is the best kind of billionaire. He truly gives back. He’s handed out over one million hearing aides to the poor, all over the world. 👏👏
I had four posters of Huey and the News on my wall as a middle schooler. I listened to the tapes all. the. time. My first big concert was to see them on the Fore! tour at the Worcester Centrum in Massachusetts. Flash forward about 17 years and imagine my surprise when I was eating a burrito in the West Village of NYC and Huey was sitting right behind me. I'm so glad I was introduced to some real rhythm and blues music in the 80's. Thanks, Huey Lewis and The News!
Me and my kids listen to Huey Lewis pretty much every day. I was born in 1980 and I grew up to his music. My dad loved his songs and we sang them together on road trips and drives around town. My dad died last year, but all Huey’s songs are like a little hug from my dad every time I hear them. Thanks to Huey for his music, for being awesome in Back to the Future, for being part of the soundtrack of my life. ❤
Sports was my first album. Like, ever. That, and Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry... 'cause my Grandma thought I was at risk of becoming religious. I owe that old lady a bunch!
One of my bucket list moments was seeing Huey Lewis & The News about 11 or 12 years ago, playing a small hotel venue in the gardens overlooking the river out back on a sunny summer afternoon. That was immense to be a part of. You just don't see bands with an entire horn section anymore.
I started high school in 84. Never bought a HL&N album but the songs were great! And the videos. I guess they were so popular I heard them enough on the air or on MTV at the time. When I heard that Huey had lost his hearing and saw a documentary clip about it, I couldn't believe it. Such a cruel thing to happen to such a cool and talented guy. Glad to see him doing so well.
THE FIRST CONCERT I EVER WENT TO WAS AT "RUTGERS UNIVERSITY" IN NEW BRUNSWICK NEW JERSEY ~ "HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS" AND "THE BONGOS" IN 1984 I WAS 21 AND IT WAS PHENOMENAL !
Wow. Borat's youngest son has done really well! (love how fan-boy-y Jordan became here... AND RIGHTLY SO!) And yeah... Off the Wall... SO underrated. It was beautiful watching this magic happen!!!
Off The Wall has sold over 20 million copies since its release August 29, 1979... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that meantime dis For more context, it's a classic album and has produced some legendary singles. It's also a lot less flashy than all his future albums but vocally I'd consider it as perhaps his best!
Thriller, Footloose, Born in the USA, Purple Rain, and Sports by Huey Lewis & the News… Wow, 1984 was quite the year of music. Looks like big brother was really the heart of rock n roll. 🎸
@@christopherporter2459 Regardless of release date, those were all the albums to reach the #1 spot on Billboard, during the year 1984. "Sports" had the shortest stay, for only one week, but still amazing considering the company it had in the charts that year.

I'm typing 1984 so much I sound like I'm one of those who takes Orwell's book a lil too seriously in the modern age. :P
1984 was a great year. On top of the fantastic music I met Joan at work. We went to her apartment a lot and listen to Huey Lewis while messing around. She wanted me to be her first and wanted it on July 20th, the anniversary of the moon landing in 1969. So we went to her apartment and listened to The Heart of Rock n Roll and Do Want A New Drug along with the rest of the great songs on that cassette. What a night!
This is the one musical I'd actually pay to see. Huey is a class act. They don't make musicians like this anymore. See kids, if you're not drinking yourself to sleep every night, you age gracefully.
Huey Lewis hosted a BBC radio show for a while back in 2010-ish, as maternity cover I think, and it was honestly the best show that has ever been. I missed him so much when it finished. Wonderful to see him again 🤩
DS guests are often fascinating people.. but I particularly love seeing a guest with hearing loss interviewed and integrated seamlessly just like anyone else, so it didn’t become the focus point or an otherwise limiting thing. Please keep having folks who happen to have disabilities on to talk about their expertise- and not doing it in a way that overly focuses on the disability itself. Huey is an absolute legend. Great to see his career continue to grow & progress even after hearing loss changed his options. Look forward to catching his musical when it comes to town.
Great interview-Jordan Klepper got much more mileage out of this interview than Jimmy Kimmel did with his Huey interview. (I know this was longer.). 1984, what a year for pop/rock! I didn’t know those five classic albums were only ones on top of chart that year! Huey album is the only one I own, though! ❤. What a humble, gracious, creative, down-to-earth guy Huey Lewis is!
Huey Lewis voice and mannerisms completely remind me of Al Franken! When he was talking about making the videos in the 80s and deciding to do it themselves. Freaking me out
What a fantastically nostalgic interview with Huey. Short tale...the year was 1984 early spring through late fall offshore onboard a North Sea pipelay-barge living in dormitory style twice X double bunk 12-hr shifts 24-7...every morning was Monday. The first person to wake up is the alarm-clock and punches in the cassette SPORTS. Those were the days, my friend....
I grew up listening to Huey Lewis. Jordan really killed this interview. Apparently he introduced Huey to FMK. I feel like that's going to earn Jordan a footnote in music history.
Ahhh, the 80’s. My teenage years spent listening to HL&TN and so many more fantastic bands. When bands played their instruments for us to see and sang proper songs. Yeah, getting old but wouldn’t change a thing.
Back when rock music started leaning toward hair bands and kinda getting away from the awesome 70s rock, here comes Huey Lewis and the News and made music cool again. One of the best concerts I've been to for sure, only seen him twice but he kinda quit touring over in our part of the country.
I was in my early 30s when he came along--his band made me turn the radio *up,* as I did with all the great groups of the 50s, '60s, and '70s when I was in my teens & 20s. These days when I turn the radio on it's classic rock or actual _classical_ music. I don't have much of an ear for Spotify's top 20, although some of it's ok.
Mike Huey Lewis story is that I saw him play at Laguna seca race track in Monterey. His his opener was Stevie Ray Vaughan. But I didn't know who Stevie Ray Vaughan was at the time. Talk about hard act to follow...
Klepper; you treated Huey with great respect, listened well, asked great questions, played with him. NICE JOB.
My dad said he was a roadie for Huey Lewis and the News back when they started. Had all the albums and his favorite song was "Walking On A Thin Line". I think he would be excited about the musical if he were still alive.
Of course he would! Music doesn't go away...
Sorry your dad did. 😇
It is my favorite song of them too!!
An incredible time and what a voice, I love all his music.
A lot of people wrote great anti-war songs, but almost nobody wrote songs for the Vietnam Vets. Great song.
Your dad probably has a much better seat from his heavenly home❤
In 2005/2006 I delivered groceries in NYC for whole foods and huey was one of my regulars. Super friendly. Great tipper.
I just watched Back To The Future this week. The Power of Love still rips!
I did too. Watched it while working with headphones on. Knew, and said ever line while picturing it in my head.
Most people don't realize that he's the guy who says "I'm sorry, you're just too loud" while Marty is playing The Power of Love in the tryout.
@@DrieStonethat is such a great cameo!
I wonder if that’ll be the opening song for this new Broadway musical.
I wish Michael J Fox had aged as well as the title track!
I saw Huey when he joined Clover in the 70's I knew he would be famous, it just took 20 yrs for the rest of the world to see it.

Awesome and thank you for your service ❤
That’s a great story! Thank you for your service! 👍
That's a cool story. Also must have been a really cool experience
I always enjoyed his cameo in Back to the Future criticizing the volume in which his own song was being played.
Ha ha yeah that was hilarious! 'too loud'
Glad to see Huey out and about. I never would have guessed he would do an interview considering his hearing loss and the affect it had on his life. A wonderful surprise. And nice interview.

Jordan is fantasic at interviewing, just give him the host spot after jon.
They are all great, but Jordan has it all
Yaaas.
Fast thinker, very witty, “clean” and very smart. Knows his ways with words.
I agree. Imagine how great he would be, once he had time to settle in to the gig. 👍

This interview wraps up perfectly.
Love Huey
Love Huey Lewis!! ❤️🎙️❤️
Who doesn’t love Huey?!?
Stuey Lewis...he had to call his band 'the Pews'...he never made it big like his little brother Huey
I acknowledge the talent but most of their music gets on my nerves. They way over played the heck out of it on the radio back in the day.
Huey Lewis said that music is challenging, it's hard to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it right.
so close to George Harrison
I got my mind set on you, set on you, set on you...dear George with Jeff Lynne, Jim Keltner, Jim Horn, and Ray Cooper... 🇲🇽✌😎
