The structure is a massive golden sphere which seems to emerge from the earth, symbolizing the birth of a new consciousness. Surrounded by twelve petals, the main building is a place for individual silent concentration. The inner chamber, known as the Inner Chamber, features the largest optically perfect glass globe in the world and is a space dedicated to meditation and peaceful contemplation. The design of Matri Mandir is inspired by the vision of Mirra Alfassa, also known as The Mother, who was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo.
Auroville itself was founded in 1968 with the aspiration of being a universal town where men and women of all countries could live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities. This vision is supported by the UNESCO endorsement and reflects Auroville's commitment to fostering human unity.
