Shinee have not done a conceptual shift this big since Sherlock.
This song is the title track to their Dont call me album, so I am interested where they take the album conceptually.
Shinee is a long way 12 years into their career, but they have deep pockets performance and vocal wise to easily pull this type of song off.

Truuuueee. They probably think that shinee sticks to a specific genre and stays safe with generic mainstream formulas but thats not shinee. Shinee's unique in a way that you know that their music will always stand out from different groups. It doesnt surprise me that its different from their other album

    1) the most interesting part is actually was the fact that the song was meant for BoA but she said it fit a group more & Minho wanted the song so they took it
    2) the song was produced by Lee Soo Man & composed by dem jointz and Kenzie & written entirely by Kenzie & arranged by Yoo Young-jin
. SHINee mentioned they wrote 4 different lyrics for the song but lsm rejected all of them because he felt the lyrics Kenzie wrote fit the song the most
    3) they never had hip-hop based title track & they wanted to try it. They had songs like that as b-sides ( & on their Japanese releases) actually but yeah never as the title track
    4) it is true the song fit Key the most he really owns this entire song for me. they all good but he really shines the most in it
    5) About the mv, they filmed at another location too for the opening parts, but due to time & other stuff, they edited a lot of it & made the mv more focused on the performance. the last part from the bridge till the end of the mv was meant to look like that though
lastly, the album is great hope you give it a listen

Many Black ppl feel very strongly abt kpop idols wearing durags (Kai wore that sparkly one in Mhmm). This is a good example of the problem with kpop and appropriation of Black culture as fashion.

I think the important thing with shinee is that they are always willing to try new genres...like if you consider how different 'view' or 'dream girl' was from 'ring ding dong' or 'lucifer', they've had a really varied sound over the years! I know in interviews they've said a few times how they wanted this comeback to be powerful and to really let everyone know that shinee's back, and having listened to the whole album I think 'don't call me' was the right choice for a title track!
Also they've been a group for over 13 years now so why not try something different :) I'm glad you enjoyed it btw and you should definitely listen to the album because their songs 'heart attack' and 'code' have the classic shinee sound you were talking about!

I think SHINee has definitely done more than just pop, although last comeback was centered on more electronic pop, but I think what they do is make legendary tracks of the "current trend"? Like "Everybody" which is a 2013 track, where dubstep/electronic music was much more common, so I find them to be masters of any concept or perhaps no concept at all, just good music. Maybe for other groups, it seems odd to go to a different route but I don't think it does for SHINee since they've done so so so much, from rnb (Replay), to electronic pop (View- Good evening etc), funk music (Married To The Music) and even a little of pop-punk in Why So Serious. For me every song of SHINee makes you want to dance and in love with it because it is overflowing with the most unique vocals. Although Don't Call Me is more hip hop, the chorus is much more than just that and I found it very interesting and just very SHINee (powerful chorus).

Hm... no, this title track is definitely not like their others but a lot has happened in the kpop industry since 2018. I think they needed a fresh start after the hiatus, because they wouldn't have gotten as much recognition if they did what they always have done. For me, this is their best title track so far. Such a banger and have been stuck in my head all week.

PD said this is what they needed for their comeback to get recognition on this new generation and doing it like in 2018 wouldn't be something smart, that it was epic and that is literally a good song and the boys pulled it off amazingly, PD also said that changing the sound and doing something new was a smart decision and it is what stands out.

Also, I think the material and "sound" that they will/can create is different because of Jonghyun. The vocal harmonies possible with him and that je ne sais quoi he adds is probably why some people might think the song has a "different" SHINee sound. If I'm not mistaken, they had to rerecord their vocals for story of light. So technically this album will be the first album made with the remaining members' talents specifically in mind. Hence, the approach (producing, concept) will be different.

I think this is SHINee’s strongest and smartest comeback since Everybody, which totally broke the mold from anything they had done previously, and yet still had their signature written all over it. That’s the thing about SHINee. More than perhaps any other KPop group, they’ve built a brand that embraces risk taking, leaving critics to say, “Didn’t expect that from SHINee, but Wow!” It’s how they stay relevant, even after 13 successful years in the business; they evolve, never resting on their laurels. Still they never stray from that which makes their sound, no matter the “genre”, quintessentially SHINee. It’s true, this song is “darker” than previous releases, but only because its theme reflects a more experienced aspect of love, a cynical one that emerges from a toxic relationship, unlike many of their earlier songs that reflect either a starry-eyed naivety, or innocent heartbreak. They’re grown ass men now, not little boys running after noona, hoping she’ll notice them, which is as it should be after 13 yrs.

I feel like the most unexpected thing about this comeback is that they went for a genre that isn't that obscure? Don't know if that makes sense.
Aside from the fact that they have never really gone for the aggressive/hysterical style even in their "strong/powerful" tracks, it's something new and fresh coming from an almost 14 yo group.
I actually love this track, because it shows just how versatile they are, and sure, other groups could have done this song, but it wouldn't sound like this, and that is kind of SHINee's strongest point in my opinion, and what made me a fan.
I do agree with this being a good choice for their comeback after such a long hiatus, they meant for it to be impact full and in your face with it, which is a mood.
And the whole album is so good, I highly recommend giving it a listen, specially CODE, most of the songs in it could have been title track, easily.

The whole final outcome is so good and very SHINee, even it's very intense hip-hop track which initially for BoA. They added their colour into it (light and refreshing) and both Minho and Key suits the concept of the era the most, as they really stand out so much in this comeback unlike the previous eras.
Tbh, this song remind me a lot of Obsession in terms of music composition and lyrics (yeah and I just know that it's the same producer producing both song) and also Tempo (bridge)😂

I think that they really needed to do something that wasn’t generally like what they usually do because after being on hiatus for so long, something different would definitely get more attention. The rest of the album is very Shinee though and it’s so so so good, absolutely one of their best

I think they are trying to bring in newer fans that are unfamiliar with SHINee. If you listen to Heart Attack (b-side) it sounds more like a “SHINee-esque” title track. Don’t Call Me is superrrrr catchy, it’s been stuck in my head since I heard it lol and I love Minho’s red hair 🔥

As a fan of SHINee for 7+ years, I have to say I've been highly anticipating this kind of comeback title track from them! - they debuted as a contemporary group, so to be different each comeback is kind of their brand and I've been waiting for this style of song! It's not the first time they've done hip hop though; here are some SHINee tracks that I personally think have a similar vibe to Don't Call Me 😊
    -Forever or Never (2008)
    -Obsession (2010)
    -One Minute Back (2013)
    -Seesaw (Korean Ver.) (2014)
    -Alive (2015)
I really recommend listening to the whole album, it has the SHINee flavour that you'd expect!😊

I'll say it again....SHINee has always been UNPREDICTABLE. I'm always baffled when people say, "this isn't a SHINee song," or "this isn't the SHINee sound". I wonder how long these people have actually been into SHINee, because if you've been with them for a while, then you would know that SHINee is always experimenting and trying new genres, mixing genres, and creating their own genres in order to give us new sounds and present a new side of themselves. Taemin does the exact same thing. Back in their early career, people were always saying how different SHINee's music was. When "Lucifer" came out people were shocked; when "Sherlock" came out people were shocked; when "Why So Serious" came out people were shocked, etc............... They've proven over and over again that nothing is out of their element.
The guys specifically said that they had never tried hip-hop, so they decided to go for it and do something new, as usual. However, they didn't just do hip-hop. They combined hip-hop with elements of R&B and classical musical theater for this song. Something no other group has done, as usual. So, my question for those thinking this song was not what they were expecting or that it doesn't sound like a SHINee song....why? With their experimental history in music, why? With the vast array of genres and mixed genres in their discography, why? I'm just really curious.
The element that makes SHINee uniquely SHINee is their voices, their harmonies, and their performances. THAT is what makes a SHINee song.
Regarding the visuals and set of the MV, this MV is directly linked to the SM Universe Theory and the SHINee Universe (as confirmed by Taemin in their own reaction to their "Don't Call Me" MV at the @ mark). It all started in 2012. Watch their intro VCR to their 2012 SWC II Concert: ruclips.net/video/EH5CEYErluo/видео.html (very beginning to @). They witnessed the destruction of EXO planet and then were "called", as Earth's guardians, to intercept the same meteor from destroying Earth. Look at the stairs they climb up to be transported -- same as in Taemin's "IDEA" MV. Also, in this MV Taemin levitates (just like his SuperM Character trailer) and then he is in the forefront of the other members in front of a spiral mirror/thing and suddenly we travel through a tunnel (same as Kai in "Jopping") and are teleported to a partial replica of the station in space, you can see the planets/stars in the background.

I think choosing Don't Call Me as the title track for this comeback was a very smart choice, because they needed something impactful that would make the more recent kpop fans wonder who are these guys? It's true that a hip-hop based song is not very common for SHINee, they have like two b-sides like that, but for a comeback it's new. However, they're always doing new things. Like Sherlock was so different when it was released, or Everybody, a dubstep song that was a very rare thing in kpop in 2013 and they did it, or View, which was the gateway to deep house into kpop, so yeah, they're trying new things that might seem weird but at the end of the day have pretty great results! I love SHINee for that.

A lot of the album has tracks that are more typical of their sound, but I think they wanted to try something new for the title track. As a very old Shawol I can say that what makes a SHINee song have the SHINee sound, is them. Just Kibum said that their strength is Onew's voice. He has one of the most distintic and beautiful voices I've ever heard in the music industry in general. Kibum also has a very distintic sound and that's what I love about SHINee, you can really tell them apart and know is a SHINee song just because of their voices (Jonghyun also added A LOT to that dynamic, like the man just created a new song by singing it with his style). You can give them any song and it will still sound like SHINee. Maybe is me being biased haha but I truly believe this. Thank you for reacting, btw!

I think one thing that definitely makes it a SHInee song are the lyrics, perhaps it works because of their age and three members are post military service. I couldn’t see NCT singing such lyrics, not even EXO, not yet anyways. I think Key killed this song, him and his hats.

      Agree!
Also all producers of the song are producers that worked with SM for so long so it definitely has that SM sound.
And I really don't see NCT sing this song as a title track or even b-side it's not their style.
I think the people say it seems like nct song just because 1) it's hip hop influenced and has a certain SM sound. 2) they are not familiar with SHINee's discography Especially their Japanese songs.

I think soundwise, what sets this comeback apart from all of their previous ones, is that it's the first one to not have any type of Jonghyun's contribution to the creative process. Having a hip-hop title track was their personal choice since they had never tried it before and also they wanted to emphasize the choreo (btw they've done hard and complex choreos like this in the past). Knowing SHINee and their diversity, I went into this with no expectations and in general I have to say I'm proud!

  • @EliseHockeyJunkie
    @EliseHockeyJunkie 3 года назад +7

As somebody who’s listened to SHINee for a long time, people saying, “woah, I didn’t expect that” is SHINee’s whole brand. People always talk about SHINee being “bright and bubbly and refreshing”, while forgetting even title tracks that are dark or intense, like Ring Ding Dong, Everybody, Amigo, and Lucifer. Aside from harmonization, I think the thing that’s most “SHINee” is experimentalism and genre-bending. Given that, I don’t think you could get much more “SHINee” than this song.

They explained how that can be a little stressing bc there's always big expectations with them. I think we can call "Don't Call Me" the perfect reintroduction of SHINee to the current 4th generation of Kpop, in particular, the 4th generation /of SM/. It's epic, it's spruced up with multiple genres in the same song, it has a harmonized chorus.
While I'm not a ShaWol, I follow SHINee's music closely, and I definitely agree that DCM is super different from the rest of their typical title tracks. I'd say it's because while SHINee have been inactive for the past few years, that "futuristic EDM pop" sound has mostly gone to NCT (see: Superhuman) and SuperM (see: their entire discography). This comeback was necessary for SHINee to kind of not only reintegrate into the current generation, but to also reinvent themselves with the perfect SM / SHINee signature.
If I had to speculate what could've been the more "normal" title track for this era, it probably would've been Heart Attack (reminiscent of Married to the Music), Marry You (light, fluffy, still brilliantly harmonized), or CØDE (especially CØDE, which is basically Sherlock's child). But, I'm very glad they decided to go for Don't Call Me. It's perfectly aggressive, has that now-signature SM sound, and SHINee being the concept kings they are, reinvented themselves while also staying in their (very versatile) lane.

You should really check out their "exclusive interview" with SBS and Inkigayo, maybe for patreon. It takes you into a deeper view about their career and the journey up to making Don't Call Me. Really interesting and insightful-they changed the song 6 times before coming to its current form. It is definitely is different from their other title tracks, but they mentioned that even for this chorus-they didn't want a typical drop chorus so maybe it doesn't hit as hard, but it's on purpose because it is meant to be less conventional. Just some interesting thoughts. The B-sides definitely go back to that retro, harmony-focused style.

I get that many people including PD aren't SHINee fans and don't know their music beside few title tracks, but SHINee has always been an experimental and contemporary group since their debut it's their brand and one of the things they are known for is how they always experimented with their style they aren't limited to a certain style
for the comments saying they never did a song like this before, they did do songs like this before as b-sides on their Korean albums & on their Japanese albums. Minho & Key had verses and rap parts that were this strong or aggressive before. And SHINee are knowing for their harmonization even in their title tracks they do it most of the time so I'm confused at the comment about how is that new to them when they always do that it isn't new to them
The song was meant for BoA by the way and they wanted it and she didn't take it because the song felt more fitting for a group

They really spice things up through the bridge. Didn’t expect the dramatic piano and it surprisingly made the song better for me. Pre-release, SHINee been saying that their title track this time will ‘sound’ different, including different lyrics. They usually sing sweet songs, that talk about chasing girls but this one’s quite straightforward about rejecting other’s obsessiveness. It’s actually quite a smart move because the title track could attract non-fans and their b-sides will satisfy fans. Especially how their b-sides were actually nominated for title track that sounded more ‘SHINee’-ish. Maybe you’ll check it out?

I've felt since the first time I heard it, that with SHINee usually leading the way into New music genres, this song isn't new for K-pop but it's very new for SHINee. This is the sound SM has been leaning on so much for the past few years. I agree that it has an NCT song. I have grown to really love the song but it still jars me for a second because my body expects to hear NCT vocals and when SHINee's very distinct vocals kick in I'm thrown for half a second. But I still love it. I do enjoy the rest of the album more (this album might be one of my favourites for bside tracks) but I do love the song. But I also hope they continue to expand and don't just stay in this zone because SM wants it.

SHINee recently did an interview Onew said he didn’t think the melody of this song was strong enough originally, so they worked on this song a lot before they were happy with it as SHINee song. So your analysis of the top line not sounding like something written by a western producer is spot on, I think!
