Great clip. I remember in the Vic Reeves Big Night In book that his favourite comedian was listed as Tommy Cockles. That was before The Fast Show so I guess that Day had been doing him in stand up for a while.
He most resembles Denis Norden but he "old music hall actor reminiscing about the past" character is done, better, by Steve Delaney doing Count Arthur Strong in my opinion. Tommy is funny too though.
Simon's a natural, bit of a lad in his youth, i think that's what stood him in good stead as a comedy genius... Love ya all the way.

It was a stand up routine... I saw him at Reading Festival in the comedy tent circa 92 (I think)
Genius Comedy. Bring Tommy Cockles back!
Wonderful people, and they really were marvellous times.
I would love to meet Simon Day! 👍😂🇬🇧
I didn't know Limahl was only about 15 or 16 years old when Kajagoogoo went to number 1 with Too Shy in 1983
Marvellous times

'I heard a few squeals, but I assumed they'd trod on a fox.'

Day doesn't take too kindly to hecklers. Much "effing and jeffing" was dished out
Pretty sure he based this character on Roy Hudd.

Barry cryer....
think this was before the Fast Show?
Early 90's, I believe. A few years before.
