  • Hitch a ride thru my backyard and experience what its like to run this old steam tractor. From lighting the match to draining the water at the end of the day. This is a scale model of a early 1900's Case Steam tractor. Thanks for watching and have a good one! Also, I mis-spoke in the video, this weighs closer to 800lbs and water boils around 340 degrees at 120psi.

    Awesome video not many in here of 1/4 scales. I have one my grandpa bought many years ago from the guy who built it. Mine is set up different as far as the water injectors. Mine has the mechanical pump that runs off crank but has a valve you have to open to suck water from the water wagon into the boiler. Kinda difficult to use if you don’t have much steam pressure and low on water no way of getting water into boiler. Have to use pump with engine running but if no steam no water

    As someone who has steam loco experience
    Try putting a 1 lump thick coal layer on the the grate
    Then you pack your wood add a little bit of coal ontop and light up

    • @scottykify
      @scottykify  4 месяца назад +1

      Good tip thank you very much!! Any recommendations on where a guy can find good quality coal? I'm near Cedar Rapids Iowa

      @@scottykify im in South Africa lol
      I heard coal over there in the US is in general crappy
      There are websites where you can buy coal for model engines
      I think accucraft does it
      But any good wood will do i think
      Maybe even charcoal
      How ever when working i think you'd constantly be firing cause the draft could destroy your fire lol
      Idk i specialize on the full size locomotives
      Not minuture
      There is a method of firing called fire it light and keep it bright
      It means you sprinkle a little bit of coal on a relatively thin fire
      But you keep it bright
      I should probably mention I'm not a fireman
      But i am a trainee (pun unintended) fire lighter/shedman
      Also once in a while you should clean your fire
      Just stir the fire around to get the ash out
      Also you gotta think ahead
      If you know you want to add water in let's say 2 minutes
      Get the boiler hot to minamize the pressure lost when adding water
      Also when you posting about the engine again?

      @@laaity unfortunately I've had some life changing events with the passing of my wife just over a year ago. With 2 young kids at home, my tinkering time has been cut down. BUT! I do have unseen footage of this engine, makeshift dyno test that I want to improve, among other various model projects just begging to be finished up and edited! So I’ve acquired a partly finished one of these. A bit smaller. The “exhaust “ from the cylinder goes into the big tube on the side. Seems too be a tube inside a pipe. Inside tube runs from boiler side through to the front. The outer casing seems to handle the exhaust.. what is it’s purpose?

    • @scottykify
      @scottykify  Год назад

      That preheats the boiler feed water from the crank driven water pump. So it's not pumping cold water into the boiler. Takes less BTU to heat the water

    • @scottykify
      @scottykify  Год назад

      The inner tube "or tubes" inside of the casing is what the exhaust flows thru and the boiler feed water goes thru the outter portion

    how often do you clean the smoke box and tubes

    • @scottykify
      @scottykify  2 года назад +1

      Well given the fact I only run it 5-10 times a year or so. I clean them everytime I run it. It's about 2 hours minimum to run it so what's another 5 minutes. I haven't actually taken cleaner to it I just vacuum the smoke box and clean the tubes.
