Public executions were a major part of life in the largest and most significant city in the kingdom. The first recorded execution happened there in 1196, but we can be certain that capital punishment took place in London long before the 12th century. London offered an impressive backdrop for some of the most infamous executions in history. As the power of the state became greater, public punishments were used to deter others from taking on a life of crime. The watching crowds grew larger as people became more comfortable with the spectacle of violence. Executions were always carried out in public but in London they became a theatrical performance. Welcome to Medieval Madness.

"The Bizarre Practice of Public Executions in Medieval London" WOKE PEOPLE 2020s!
Love your channel brother massive medieval history fan myself after all it's part of the heritage of our country.
Raid is trash.
Ah. The origiins of reality television.
LOL 😆
I was hoping for video, all those people and not one iphone?
You you imagine how True Crime tv would be if public executions were as prevalent today as they were during the Middle Ages. 😂
hahaha the old live leak
Yep yep
Appreciate the team digging into medieval history and creating content. Delightful to listen to, even if the subject matter is unfortunately grim.
Medieval girls when their boyfriends take them out to the public quartering: 😍
Last public execution in England: 1867
In the US: 1936
In France: 1939
In Iran: 2022 (so far).
Besides the daily knife killings in London every day now u are right. But they dont want you to talk about that.
@@allnewjient7651 that's atleast better than the daily mass shootings that happen in the United States.
@@huntertrum3658its no where near as common as stabbing in the UK lol nice try tho

You either die a hero or live long enough to get sponsored by RAID: Shadow Legends.
Disgraceful
Still love your channel, MedievalMadness. Keep up the great work
Good vid as usual. People think dark history was sooooo long ago, if you think of it its far closer
I live in Toledo,Spain,a incredible Medieval Village that for sure deserves a visit, we have a notorious Spanish Inquisition Museum,a Medieval weapons Museum and a torture Museum ..nice to see that old Brits also appreciated so much the spectacle business.
I have always wanted to visit the Spanish Inquisition Museum! I envy your proximity to it!
@@Harbinger1776 just 5 minutes from my house, is in an old church with notorious paranormal activity, but one place i have never visited is the Wichcraft Museum, there is something intimidatong and sinister in this place.
All the city is like a Museum and there is so intense history that is impossible remove the floor of your own house or basement without find bones, skuls, ancient coins and so on..
@@Harbinger1776 is a very intimidating place, plus the fact all artifacts are real and were in fact used to torture and maiming "witches" and "devil worshippers", but the place is Heaven in Earth for Medieval period lovers and BDSM fanátics..🤣
Michael Barrett, the last person hanged in public was an innocent Irish man.
An interesting read if you want to check it out.
Resisting subjection = Terrorism.
A Day out at the execution! I understand that times were different then but it still blows my mind how it was looked at as entertainment by the masses. 😮😮😮
The content presentation is consistently top-shelf.
If I had a choice in life ,I would take all of these pains ,one after the other, over the pain of loosing my beautiful mum.💔
My poor boy, you have my sincerest commiserations. You must be in agony! I lost my man of 4 years to a heart attack 11 years ago and I've never known sorrow like it. Losing a parent would be a thousand times worse and it's my worst nightmare, one I know will come true one day; so I really feel your pain.
Please know this: it DOES get better. The periods of grief develop gaps, which get wider apart so you can breathe. Then the grief becomes less intense and easier to cope with.
You'll never stop missing her but you WILL be happy again. I promise. Xxx
My condolences
@@SexRealist301 thank you so much for your message and I am so sorry for your loss too 🙏🏼❤️
Not medieval, but there have been some finds in London showing the Roman's crucified local scallywags. It it is suggested they were punished in this manner for rebellion as opposed to common crime. Fun fact, it's believed that the manner of crucifiction was standardised across the Empire, based on the handful of crucified remains all sharing several identical pathologies. Esp, the manner of how the feet were affixed etc.
Once upon a time, there was a tiny bird who loved to watch Postman Pat through the window of a little cottage. Every day, the bird would perch on the windowsill and watch as Pat delivered letters and packages to the people of Greendale. It was a source of great joy for the bird, who found the adventures of Postman Pat to be endlessly fascinating.
One day, as the bird was watching the show, a historian happened to walk by. The bird, being quite curious, struck up a conversation with the historian.
"Excuse me," said the bird. "I couldn't help but overhear you talking about executions in London. It's quite fascinating to me that the same humans who once executed each other could create something as wonderful as Postman Pat."
The historian was taken aback. "Well, yes," he said. "I suppose it is quite interesting when you think about it that way."
The bird continued, "It's almost as if humans have an incredible capacity for both violence and creativity. It's quite profound when you think about it."
The historian smiled at the tiny bird. "You know," he said, "you're quite wise for a little bird."
The bird beamed with pride. "Thank you," he said. "I like to think I have a unique perspective on things."
And with that, the bird settled back in to watch Postman Pat, content in the knowledge that he had just had a profound and humorous conversation with a historian.
That's REALLY cute ❤
Can't imagine medieval people finding entertainment in death. It's either extreme boredom or bloodlust. And a WIDE margin between those two motivations
Maybe it’s those and something like “I might die tomorrow, but at least I’m not that guy getting hanged”
Or it’s neither and you’re only putting your own concepts of right and wrong in place of theirs
You seem not to understand humanity then, I’m no barbarian but even I can’t help but get excited when seeing a 12 car nasty pile up at NASCAR or when ice hockey players toss the gloves and start duking it out, I’m no fighter either I’m a lover lol.
@@cjthebeesknees LOL dude I was forced by a friend's older brother to watch VHS bootlegs of Faces of Death as a kid.
It's real footage of people dying in accidents, conflict zone executions, mob justice, cartel violence, beheadings. Animals getting beaten to death by psychopaths.
I'm guessing you wouldn't want to watch it, bc no normal human would, which is what I was getting at
@@infinity2z3r07 I'm so sorry you had to experience that kind of abuse. What kind of horrid human would to that to a kid.
Best part about Friday’s !! Thanks Again 🫡
Hanging drawing and quartering describes the actions in the order that they were carried out - drawing means disembowelling
This kind of entertainment would even be popular today.
we should re-institute these forms of punishment for those who steal from Target, Wal-Mart and CVS.
MEDIEVAL MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn dude a 90 second raid ad? You're gettin PAID good shit
They need to bring some of this back.
Hell yeah, people getting kind of crazy lately, and they knew they can get away with shit, get a nice lil cell and "kush" life and not worry about the death penalty... bring back the public executions, put the fear in some folks, get them back on a good path!
Because life was so great in medieval times.
You are both insane
A majority of Americans would probably be in favor of it. But would it really deter crime? Some psychos might like all the attention they could get from a public execution.
Depends entirely on who gets perforated and/or burnt. If it was wankers like Wayne Couzins, David Carrick and Ian Watkins then bring it on. I'll get the opera glasses you get the popcorn.
Those were the good days, these days are no good
You, my dim witted friend, would NOT survive those times.
Longbeard probably came back from the third crusade with massive PTSD… I can see how he might be angry contrasting what he experienced with the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy Christians in London

1:55 they should've picked a better name I associate the phrase "Love quest" with Chris Chan lmfao
I never thought of them tossing the decoposed heads into the thames, a source of drinking water. Now I understand why they drank smakk beer instead....ick!

Love your channel so well put together
4:54 unintentional optical illusion mindf*** lol
It's not unintentional, that's the central object in Brueghel's Magpie and the Gallows. The optical illusion is a key part of the painting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magpie_on_the_Gallows
Damn some of you people are so goddamn entitled it’s ridiculous you can skip the damn ad it ain’t that serious plus that’s a good thing this channel and the narrator much deserves it. Keep up the great work medieval madness❤
racist comment
Yup well said. I agree the ads are really annoying, but for being able to enjoy this awesome content for FREE, I think is a fair compromise

One of the best episodes ever
The good old day's. Wait. I forgot it's still occurring in some countries. If you are Not a resident of one of these places, be Grateful.
Damn and we think the Aztecs were brutal
My only problem with this video was the placement of early 19th century pictures in a couple slides.
Grim fact. The act of hanging a condemned man in London, and elsewhere, was known as ‘turning off’ - because the executioner would literally push the condemned off the back of a cart or horse - the phrase for that was ‘turning off’. ‘Successful’ executions were recorded in official documents as ‘on this day X X was turned off’.
When you switch off a light you might call it ‘turning off’ the lights. Youre using a phrase derived from the common language of hanging executions.

right!
It’s all so barbaric. London must have stunk like death. I wouldn’t go anywhere near that water.
London and Paris have historically been two of the dirtiest, smelliest and most disease ridden cesspits of human filth and misery in all of Europe before the Early modern period.
Great work, though they ad you play is 45 seconds too l

We all know they do and so to the people who put them in the videos. They pay the bills for a lot of channels to be able to do video creation full time. I just skip those parts of videos and accept it as a minor inconvenience which is the price of pretty much free content to watch.

Wow, Raid shilling now? Sad.
I really enjoy this channel. As a premium YT subscriber, I no longer watch any over the air broadcasts except sporting events. I can choose what I want to watch on a massive amount of subjects, and as a history junkie the options are almost endless. Now the reason for commenting here. The death penalty is letting criminals off the hook. NO ONE gets out of here alive. Life is the hard part, death is easy. Back to my YT watching habits. There are many NDE (near death experience) channels on YT. The vast majority of experiences related are beyond positive. They are magical and incredible and people who come back from this experience often have abilities they didn't have previously have and they are metaphysical in value. Past life regression is reality. A couple billion humans know this as reality. Our human conscious does not just disappear into the ether. We remain ourselves in spirit without the human psychological hang ups and detriments. Imagining life in Medieval times is more horrifying to a modern mind than death itself - IMO. Good grief Ancient Roman battlefield medics had a better grasp on human physiology than the BEST doctors in Medieval times. Bottom line - the worst of all criminals that, according to unfounded modern & ancient sentiments, deserve the death penalty. I say NO NO NO - you keep them alive as long as possible to experience all the trauma and medical problems all humans experience. We will all find out that death is nothing but a transition our souls have made countless times.
