I hate the fact that it isn't easy to notice if you aren't looking either. Like once I had my favorite villager come over when she hadn't been there before, but I was on the phone with friends so I didn't hear her, and since I was busy before she had come in I tried to leave but ended up kicking her out in the process. Which, on that note, makes it more annoying because for some reason there's no option to say "no I wasn't going to leave" or something like that if you accidentally walk through your door

I found the best place to use Streetpass at the height of the 3DS was actually at McDonald's. Nintendo had a deal with them that any Nintendo devices could access the WiFi for free. I am a truck driver too and at that point I had a limited internet data allowance per month. I never understood the breakable tools in New Horizons since you end up buying them instead of crafting them anyway. I suppose it would make sense for them to break if they were ''flimsy'' types, but after that they shouldn't break anymore. I understand that crafting is the core mechanic of this game, but isn't enough that we have to craft items, clothes, food etc? It's *especially* dumb for the golden tools to break too, since they become as useless as the rest. You end up letting them rot in your storage.

@Leeloo_the_fox When I say "isn't it enough to have to craft items, food clothes etc" I mean it as in "crafting already has a good enough reason to exist and be useful to players, so having our tools constantly break is dumb". Meaning it's obvious the game is trying to force players to use the DIY table as much as possible by making our tools break when we already use it to craft fish bait, specific items and clothes, food etc. And it doesn't even work since most players don't bother and just buy new tools. I *obviously* didn't mean it as in "95% of the clothes are crafted and not bought". Come on now.

I 100% disagree with Lyle's role in Wild World being even close to one of the worst features in Animal Crossing. Was it mechanically useful? Absolutely not. However, if you're trying to judge it based on that, you're entirely missing the point. Lyle's character is that of a scammer. Not only are the amounts of bells he gives you way too low to cover the cost of medicine or the fake painting, but you'll actually stop receiving payments altogether before you can even make your money back on the insurance itself. His inclusion was never meant to be a mechanically favorable one, it was purely for character. I'd say if you took his character out of wild world, it would only serve to make the game worse as that would only serve to make the game less charming and lively. It's pure character and that's awesome! New Horizons could use more of that.

there's something similar in New Horizons with Flick's character. you can give him insects for him to make art models for u which are normally HUGE, especially his favorites like the Atlas Moth. however giving him fish will give you only small fish models in return, probably because he's not as passionate about it. It's hilarious seeing people's disappointment after working hard for multiple oarfish to submit for a model and then get a tiny one 😭

    • @Kirito0609
      @Kirito0609 Год назад +69

absolutely, i think most players that started with acnh understandably are missing the point of certain things in older games. If you look at animal crossing population growing it barely had any "useful" mechanics because that's just not what the game is about. It's about living in a soulful town with other villagers that don't really care about beeing obnoxiously nice to you, hell they regularly would steal from me and call me poor. I wish acnh wouldn't have been such a shallow sandbox experience :(

  • @junker15

The Wisp is the ONLY time the game plays my town tune in the correct key!
A small misfeature of ACNH, that I only discovered in ACNH, is that to get coffee to go, I have to talk to Brewster TWICE before I can get it. It explains why I was never able to work behind the counter in ACNL as I suspect it's the same way and I gave up after only talking once and nothing (apparent) happening.
Here's another ACNH misfeature: can't deal with flowers in bulk, they don't stack, they cost one shovel use each to dispose of. It took me a week to clean up the town after I'd let it go so long.
Speaking of stacking: I think almost everything that makes sense to stack should stack to 99. There's absolutely no reason to slap an arbitrary restriction on how many we can stack. And again, there are things that don't stack which absolutely SHOULD stack.
Finally, if anything about crafting needs to be fixed, it should be that anything that has durability be given a LIFE BAR. You don't have to represent it as a number, but please let me see how much I have left!

I feel like, at the very least, a golden tool should be indestructible. Golden tools were such a fun achievement in previous games, but now they feel like a waste of time/resources since they'll just end up broken anyway.
Also, I adore Lyle! Particularly in Wild World, he's my favorite nuisance. The way he incessantly follows you around trying to convince you of his "health insurance" is exactly my brand of comedy. He added a lot of charm to the game. The single town per console was an issue with City Folk as well. It wasn't new to New Horizons. (Granted, with the WiiU, you could enter Wii Mode from different profiles, which could give you multiple towns - but on the Wii itself it's literally one town per console)
In Re-Tail for New Leaf, villagers would refuse to buy anything that was triple (or more) the price that Reese suggests at the start - but to make sure they buy the items, when a villager is in a shop, wait until they "ping" an item, then you can try to convince them to buy it. If it's below 3 times the value Reese had suggested, they'll buy it every time. Any more, and they'll say the price is too high.

Actually villagers will buy anything in retail as long as it's 4x -1 < 10000, so 4x the price set by Reese minus 1 if product doesn't exceed 100000. The maximum a 300 bell item can be sold for is 1199.

The main issue with New Horizon's crafting/tool breaking is just how cumbersome and slow all the menus and process is to do anything.

Here's the thing about Wisp, he was so badly designed with how he selected what to give you as a reward in New Horizons, that Nintendo in one of their update patches for the game, modified how he selects what to give you. It now currently, depending on what you choose to request from you among the two request choices, you can get a more valuable item than before, as they raised the Bell value of what he can give you. So, even if he gives you something you don't want, you likely can sell the item he gives you at a higher price than previous gifts he gives you for helping him. Still no unique items from him though

As I was watching this video last night, I was flipping through my AC: Population Growing strategy guide (the official Nintendo / Nintendo Power one), and found out that, Wisp was in the GC game as well, but apparently would do more than just reward with a random, useless or junk item; he would repaint your house's roof, or pull all the town's / island's weeds, and like one or two other things. But yeah, in New Horizons, after about 2 or 3 times with Wisp, I just got to where I never even interact with the NPC anymore.

It's crazy how much I enjoy New Horizons because the whole game actually seems like a chore to me lol. I have a whole list of things that get tedious...
-I agree with what you said about Wisp. Couldn't care less about any of the items he has given me.
-I didn't even participate in Bunny Day. I got a whole bunch of eggs but couldn't be bothered because I also hate crafting.
-When it comes to terraforming, you know how on Happy Home Paradise, you can do it in an overhead view and it is much quicker? WHY on God's green earth do we have to do each square one-by-one on our own island? Takes literally 100x as long.
-Although he isn't as bad as Wisp, Gulliver is still annoying lol. Every time Isabelle announces he's there I'm just like "oh great 🙄"
-Tools breaking. No explanation needed. Just why?
-Inventory space. It gets better once you upgrade to 40 items instead of 20 and especially with storage sheds, but it still never seems to be enough especially when youre terraforming and have to dig up flowers and the only way to get rid of them is to take them to Nook's Cranny and sell them.
-Fossils. They're good for one thing after you complete the exhibit, which is selling them because they actually give you a decent amount of bells. But once the exhibit is completed it feels like a chore having to go and get them assessed just to be told by Blathers they've already been donated. I wish it were more like how you can check Critterpedia to see which fish/bugs you've caught.
And that's probably not even half of the things that irritate me, yet i still play the game almost daily lmao. Thanks for reading my novel if you made it all the way through😂

Easily the thing I dislike most in the Animal Crossing games is that stores and such having limited operating hours.
It actively punishes the player for things they often cannot control.
Sure, there are ordinances, but you can only have one at a time; the schedule changes are miniscule in New Horizons, and it's a half-baked bandaid fix for a problem that shouldn't exist to begin with.
Sure, in New Horizons, there's at least the dropoff box for selling, but it punishes you for using it by cutting your sell values by a *_fifth._*
If you have a circadian rhythm disorder, changing the clock is practically a necessity for most of the games, and, if you have Non-24 in particular, it's an incessant problem.
It's just player-unfriendly design, plain and simple.
    I'm very passionate about this.
Bugs and fish having specific availability times is a little more tolerable because completing the Museum is a long-term goal, whereas shops are a core part of the gameplay loop, especially due to the limited inventory and storage...
...Oh god, the limited inventory and storage. That's another bloody issue in itself. At least there's the Catalog in New Leaf and New Horizons to rebuy things, but it's still not ideal.

A feature I wanted to say was kind of bad came to mind when you showed a clip of Brewster's Cafe for a moment. While I really loved the optional part time job of taking coffee orders from villagers, once you got to a certain "level" the animals would just tell you they wanted "the usual" even if they were new in town and had never come in to order before... So my only choice was to Google their order or get it wrong. In earlier stages, the animals would tell you their order, or give you hints about how much sugar or milk they wanted. But once you'd earned all the Brewster prizes, you were at the hardest level permanently so animals would never tell you their order any more, you'd have to know already or guess.

Click and gives you a no flavor text menu Orville’s dialogue; fly away or open gates, fly away sub menu with dodo code or friend’s or NMT or Harv or Work, open gates submenu for online or local. Then confirm and boom process done. Once the game finishes loading up the multiplayer session you could have Orville say “Woah don’t be late for your flight!” Or “Glad we could open the gates just in time!” For a little immersion tease.
Hell for visiting friends, who you already have saved to your system to be friends mind you, (-_- idea I’m about to propose shocks me it’s not ingame, thanks Nintendo) why not add a little “go visit” or “invite over” button on the friends list app in game? A quick stream line way to just quickly go to someone’s island. The breakable tools in New Horizons is the absolute worst thing they've ever added to the games. Most of the stuff in this video is quirky side features that can be skipped with no ill effect or are only occasionally encountered, but you can't get around the breakable tools. It just adds a constant, low-level stress that shouldn't exist in an Animal Crossing game.
Another added feature I really dislike is counterfeit artwork. In Gamecube Animal Crossing, paintings were super rare, so just finding one was exciting. They were never fakes. In every game after, they're more common but become a chore because you have to inspect them first. I'm not sure if Wild World even had inspection, you might have just had to roll the dice.
Third feature that was really bad, and was thankfully removed, was flowers wilting. In Gamecube and in New Horizons, flowers stay colorful forever. For all the games in between, they turn all dark and gross if you forget to water them. I ended up just not bothering to plant flowers during those games.

Golden tools have always been a satisfiying reward to commemorate your progress, but now that they break, it's just a waste of resources. Gold is already pretty hard to get in ACNH because of the insanely low probability rate, at the end of the day it's much more efficient to just use normal tools. It's almost like the game mocks you for making golden tools.

Plus, I like having them over and seeing what they have to say about my house and the furniture, especially my cranky villagers. They’re so sweet and kind, even if they can come off as a bit sneering and rude sometimes. I don’t have to deal with any issues that involve having more than one person on my island because I don’t share my island with anyone else. I also don’t allow visitors on my island for the most part. The tools breaking is a real annoyance, especially because I don’t use flimsy tools. They take longer to break, sure, but it’s really annoying when they do break, especially my shovels when I’m digging up flowers to decorate my villagers yards with. It’s a good thing I can always go to Nook’s Cranny, though. If it’s not open, I’ll just go back in time so it’ll be open.

Villagers react better at the flea market if the item matches their preferences, like lazy Papi loving the soft-serve lamp despite his furniture being the alpine set. Fr, I'm pretty familiar with the issues of the co-op mode and one island. When we first got the switch, we got Animal Crossing, and my older sister had taken the Island Representative thing, although me and my siblings all played on that island and poured a lot of love and work into it. Co-op was alright, although it did feel very limiting and like we were dogs on a leash connected to the current leader. It was kinda hard to get what everyone wanted done. You want to go to Nook Cranny and buy a tool? Well, maybe wait until your sibling has gone to the museum to assess fossils and donate stuff. Then wait for your other sibling to get something from their house storage. Also, you're gonna have to come along if you want to play and get what you want done. Oh, you want to pick something up, well, you're gonna have to wait until you're the leader, go over to the recycling bin, and pick it up then.
And the one island thing. My older sister was the Island Representative, and we were all fine with that. However, we all stopped playing Animal Crossing for several months after a long time of playing it. I have recently picked it up again and starting actively playing, although my older sister barely plays now. It feels sort of like I'm in control of the island now, just...without the control? Idk, I feel like I'm sort of carrying the island now but I still have limited power, which is kinda irritating. And sure, if I want my own island I could just buy another switch, but for some people who don't want to waste money buying ANOTHER switch or don't have the money to, it's very limiting and annoying. Also, if you guys are wondering, the switch we got was a gift from a family friend, along with a few games they gave us as well. We never would haven gotten a switch otherwise.

i disagree about retail, i was actually pretty surprised to see reese and cyrus have basically no role in the NH base game. i think the warm cozy vibe of retail would suit NH really well especially as a place to buy or sell extra resources or maybe trade/recycle/diy materials that villagers could contribute to. or you could maybe post like “i need 5 hardwood” and villagers would contribute. like public works projects but better. as for NL as well i always got a little kick when i could sell my villagers something i made intentionally cheap cause it would be cute for their house. reese is also so sweet, i love timmy & tommy but reese is way more convincing as a small business owner looking for a new horizon so to speak. idk, i miss retail. it always felt homey.

I never minded Wisp. Always felt like his task gave me something to do at night after completing my daily routine. However, I can totally agree on Bunny Day and breaking tools. I thought Bunny Day was not enjoyable even in New Leaf where it only lasted a day and when there was no crafting materials you needed to keep on hand. Making the event last at least a week in New Horizons was a terrible change. In 2020, it lasted TWO weeks, other years, it lasted just one, but that's still too long for an event most fans don't really seem to enjoy. As for breaking tools, it was pretty obvious even before the game released that this was going to be an undesirable feature. It really slows down the process down of gathering materials, and is also just straight up annoying to deal with. It wouldn't be so bad if there were unbreakable upgrades similarly to the golden axe in previous games, but no, the golden tools break just like the others do. I will say that for the next game, I hope that Bunny Day will maybe be adjusted and fixed after knowing how bad fans hated the event in New Horizons. For breaking tools, I would prefer if the feature would be left behind in New Horizons, but if it does return, at least make unbreakable upgrades for your tools.
Also, grass-wear was in New Leaf, but unlike City Folk, the grass would grow back after a little bit. New Horizons was the game that completely removed it.

Storage in New Lead was *terrible*, it's a lot better in New Horizons but for crafting I'd love something that's a bit more like Disney's Dreamlight Valley - if I have an item in a box, I don't have to go to that box and go and get it then run back to wherever my craft station is. Would save so much time!

You forgot the biggest pain in New Horizons is the multiplayer stuff. I hate going to islands with several visitors cause they keep stopping the game to say someone came or left. And don’t start on quiet leaving.

The ACNL's Re-tail is underused?? I use it every day I play. I really like how I can sell my items there for a better price than just selling it to Reese or the Nooklings. And sell it does. I never had any problems with that. And have Cyrus customize an item, or make use of the daily bonus selling price. I just wish the store was on the main street along with the other shops, so I had more space in my town for public works projects and orchards.
I too wish we could have more than one island in NH. It was so much better in NL. Much preferred that it saved on the cartridge. I learned the difference the hard way when I got my second version of Fantasy Life, because I wanted to try other starting lives without deleting my existing save files I didn't know it saved on the console...

I'd actually argue that crafting in general in New Horizons made the game worse, but I notoriously just straight up hate crafting in almost all games, it's tedious and it often forces me to collect things that take up tons of space because I just MIGHT need it someday

The fact that Pocket Camp made heavy use of the crafting idea was definitely meant to be a way to somewhat prepare players for what was to come in New Horizons, although we didn't know NH was even coming until I think around a year after PC released?

Bunny Day was also bad cause it overlapped with the cherry blossom items which are only available for a week.
New Horizons also has annoying achievements. Don't get me wrong they're great but some of the requirements for the final stages for achievements that have multiple parts to them. Especially fishing & bug catching. Some of these were so annoying to finish(especially if you play enough days to feel burnt out) that if it weren't for requirements I'd say I finished almost every achievement.(Missing fish & bugs for the reasonable ones)

i miss re-tail so bad i’m sorry😭 might just be nostalgia but so many of my core memories is putting an item up for sale then pushing a villager into it so they buy it. the pricing was definitely tricky though bc they'd just ignore it if it was too expensive

The only thing I kind of disagree on was the Re-Tail section. I really enjoyed the flea market feel since there was a holiday or event in the previous games where your villagers came to your house to try and haggle and buy your stuff. Here you just gotta push a villager in the direction of the item and they'll spark an interest in buying it.
Also, there is a cap on how much money you can sell items for. You can look up the formula on what the maximum can be for any which item, just requires a bit of research if you want to maximize profit, or be like me and just not care and list it as whatever. For me it was a cute passive way to sell items in an indirect way from time to time. And if you have multiple people playing the same file with different players, they can help encourage the villagers to buy your stuff too or maybe they will even buy it themselves. I've had my sister do that for me plenty of times.
This was loads better than the City Folk auction house because it brought in a more alive feeling with having the villagers be an option for buying stuff without them invading your home. 😂
