Some of you may recognize this song from GTA San Andreas. I myself have very good memories of cruising through San Andreas to this song and others on KDST.
To quote Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith, "It's not often you heard a Who track with Townshend on the vocals, but when he stepped up, you knew he was gonna blow you away."
*** Note* Due to a few comments that seem like trolling, I am obliged to say that the trivia is my way of filling in the 1 minute and 58 seconds of instrumental intro before the vocals start. If you don't want to see the trivia, skip to 1:58 where the vocals start. Relax, enjoy the music and the trivia, and chill out. ****
Speaking of GTA San Andreas, I have a few San Andreas videos on my Dailymotion channel at dailymotion.com.... If you're more into the newer GTA games like GTA IV and GTA V, I have lots and lots of videos from those two both on my Dailymotion channel and on here.
Describes lyrics instead of showin them. How stupid.
@lesvalleny8134 did you watch past the 2-minute mark before commenting? The instrumental intro is almost 2 minutes in length, instrumental meaning no words are being sung during that time. Right around the 2-min mark both the vocal and the on-screen lyrics start - or they are supposed to, unless YT's latest update has broken this 11 year old video.
@@YardDart63 That dude was a TOTAL JACKASS!!!
I remember a long time ago when I was just a kid. We went to see the Who at the Cleveland Auditorium, I think it was, and when the place filled up the lights went off. People were kind of buzzing about what was going on. Then the music of the synthesizer started in syncopation to this song, and a white lite strobe started beating in pulse to the music. The synthesizer started this high speed repetition of the notes and the white light was reaching ever higher in all directions. And then BOOM the house lights went on and there were the Who on stage playing it. By the time Townsend started to sing that whole place was jumping! Quite an experience and one I don't think I'll ever forget.
You painted a good picture..thanks . You know i just read the words for the first time about a month ago .... all these years I thought it was “ livin in funk “😎
Thank you for sharing I felt I was there so cool ..your parents took you? Woww.
Bad Religion went like that in Seattle // opened with Spirit Shine
forgotten song off 1996 album
at about 45 seconds singer say
let's go! whole place took off
later on i thought about how i had forgotten the particularly fast paced nature of Spirit Shine it really does
pick up and take off
I think I've listened to EF a dozen times today
listening to the eagles
understanding their entire catalogue
same with the ramones and the who
Your awesome memory and description of this gave me the chills!!!!!🎉😊
Wow thank you
One of the best rock songs ever created.
The layering on this song is just top notch. The Who were masters of the build and masters of storytelling.
Remember speeding through traffic in GTA San Andreas listening to this song... Good old days
Allen Jackson nahh, I think it was something more like flying a hydra in the desert.
+Preston Bourgeois (ArcticWarrior74) yes
Allen Jackson I remember it on GTA vice city
Fuck yes Mr. Jackson, those days...
Woop Chicken. Vice city?
And yes i have the game but what do you mean?
Cruise in my car through the country and the desert in the lands of San Andreas. This is the best song of all the radio staions! Good memories from an old game. Thx for uploading.
Was thinking the same thing when I read your comment. Cruising the open roads of SA jamming to KDST. I had a couple routes drawn out on the paper map that I'd follow. Ah memories.
Follow the dam train CJ
This song came out when I was 18. I love the lyrics and how they talk about how so many people try to convey an image of themselves that is not real. Reminds me of Facebook and social media now.
I just love the lyrics in this song. Keen observations of people and life. My two favorites - “The girls smile and people forget.” “The shares crash; hopes are dashed.”
Talk about timeless...this could have been written yesterday about today!
80's, oh my god, I miss you a lot :(. Best era for all time :). I am so lucky :). One of the best music :)
I was a committee clerk in my state's legislature more than 40 years ago and when this song came out during that time it reminded me of my job.
I always thought it was living in the funk you're living in the funk
Eazy E its better that way too
That's exactly what I heard at first too lol
Right lol
I alwayw thought "It's a living and it's work!" MY BAD!!!!!!!
I also thought it was Eric Clapton! AGAIN -- MY BAD!!!!!!!
Never had a song affect me as this one I love it
Some of you may recognize this song from GTA San Andreas. I myself have very good memories of cruising through San Andreas to this song and others on KDST.
Hell yea!
Rock n' roll never gets old. Only a bit dusty!
Yeah Kdst was the only good station...
Did you know that Axel Rose was Tommy Nightmare Smitty?
HolyDerpSquad and Radio X ! :D
2020 and this song is still bumping the speakers!!!! Brilliant song
2021 👍
Saw them perform it live in DC, back when it was new. Pete was way ahead of his time.
Oh man,I always thought it was “living in the funk”!Sooo many songs I still need to read the lyrics to! Awesome video
Pete Townsend is one of the great ignored geniuses of modern rock
How has he been 'ignored'?
Rusty Bearden ABSOFUCKENLUTELY!!
Lol that’s nonsense sorry
How is he modern? This track was released in 1982.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I was born in 71..I heard this song while growing up. Now I am 51 and it's weird when you hit a certain age where you have to go back to where things were different. I will always love the 70's and 80's. something special.
thank you sooo much for this song I love it, I love how you put a little a trivia in when ever I post music to face book I go to google also and post a little history about the song I really appreciate yor hard work man keep it up whoop whoop
We just saw The Who in England. They are still rocking it brother.
I LOVE THIS FUCKING SONG
Me too!
libby crosier And I.love you for loving this fucken song
libby crosier ~ "WORD" SISTA!! Gives me the chills every single time I hear it!🤑 It more than applies to the people of this generation but with no financial separation defining them.
Everybody jest think day all dat!
This song is off the. Chain its before its. Time
That was a great description of the song. I remember the very day that it was released, back in '81-'82, can't remember exactly. I know that I was sixteen. Didn't know what the hell it meant, but loved the entrancing sound of the music. Thanks, you've cleared things up for me after 34 years!
Was playing San Andreas this last week on ps2 had to add this to the playlist its nice to listen to some feel good music and step away from hip hop.
What a great song man! It grooves along....straight ahead, great underlying guitar and bass undertones...vocals flowing, tugging with the time as the drums lay it down.Solid. Yeah.
This song is as relevant now as it was during the early 1980s…
Possibly even more so
After listening to the song for almost 40 years, today I found out it wasn’t “Livin in funk “...😎 still seems Appropriate though. They seemed to be livin in funk ...Money can’t buy happiness.💸 2/2/2021. and only one other person agrees🤷🏼♂️
Been hearing this great song for 30 years ,I'm a bit slow but now i get it. Thank you for taking the time to do this and the lyrics, your great......I LOVE IT....
Thank you! I have ALWAYS loved this song. Now I know what it's about. I could never make out the lyrics...you made a great video, I enjoyed it immensely...and now I love the song more than I did before. Great job!!
The Who still rocks. We just saw them in the UK July of 2023 and Pittsburgh a couple of years before that. My favorite band of all time. ❤
💪😎👍THIS SONG MOTIVATES ME AND MAKES ME REFLECT ON THE ABUSE I'VE PUT MY LIFE THROUGH. EVEN THOUGH I'VE NEVER BEEN WEALTHY IN FACT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN BROKE. THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF THE REASON WHY.
Classic song with a classic message, utter genius.
How great is it that a couple of video games (vice city/San Andreas) have educated a whole generation with great music from diverse genres like this great song?
One of the great sleepers of all time. And it just keeps coming back and back. First out in 1982, me and the Edzoid, running lines in front of the dance floor. And did not get busted.. Now that's memories - dodging bullets. And no one to tell, cause no one would believe.
Nicely done. I liked the bit in the beginning with the trivia and song meaning. It helped me to understand the tune better. Thank you :)
Thank you so much for posting this! I have been looking for the song not really knowing the lyrics or the whole title, or what it was about. So THANKS!!! Great music, great style. Yeah, I noticed it used in the car commercial too.
I like this song. I sometimes listen to it on the K DST station in GTA San Andreas. A chunk of this song is also in some of the new GMC commercials. It's a great song to jam to. :)
ns4270railfan yeah the song was way before its time
you did a good job man
is good to know a little history about the songs that you like!
I just want to go on a long road trip and listen to this song the whole time.
Such an underrated band! Love this song! Baba O'Reily is one the greatest records ever in music history IMO. And this is coming from a mostly hip-hop, r&b, pop, classic jazz, big band/swing & movie score guy. Though I love some classic rock & alternative.
2021 & still jamming!!!!
Played GTA SA back in the day always loved this song , getting into the who recently and discovering this is by them , brilliant
Thanks for the video !! I always thought he was saying "dressed to kill", a very popular expression. I guess I was wrong and he is really saying "dress to kill", sort of like, a new way of saying it, combining an existing language form with a futuristic version of it, sort of like all The Who's music, very forward looking and modern.
Who's still listening in 2019? =D
Still listening Dec 29 2020
And 2021 👍🏼. Living in funk ! Hahaha
& MORE TRUE TODAY THAN IN 1982;
I AM 65 & THIS IS ONE OF "OUR" GIFTS TO 2021!!!!!!!!!
IT'S---ALL A "FRONT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRIPPEL CHECK YOUR FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
still one of my favorites in 2017. kind of neat GMC used it for ad campaigns in the last year...American made trucks, American made classic rock. I get it.
Ryan Perry lol the who is British
Great job... loved the lyric overlay. I am just not discovering The Who sad to say. This is all due to the Jerry Bruckheimer shows like CSI, NCIS, etc. I never knew who the WHO really were until lately. They rock and are awesome. Thanks for the insights into this song.
Better late than never!!
When I was 17, The Who - Live at Leeds, blew my mind. Lifetime fan here @ 69 yrs old.
I absolutely love this song!
My all~time favorite rock " riff"..It's a perfect intro song for a boxer/fighter ..walking into the ring! " It's Hard"...That was the album back in 82'..I was 19 partying my ass off, blasting this , now classic!
Nicky Depaola that song sucks
the beginning is quite possibly my favorite intro to any song
Is always thought the lyrics were, "their livin' in a front, we're livin' in a front; it's a put on"
Crystal roberts that’s what I searched because I heard it on the radio and thought that’s what they were saying. Took me straight here. Thanks RUclips!!
Everybody has something different they hear
KMET- Los Angeles...Gone but not forgotten...Living during the Golden Age of music and no idea that you where...
A few of us will
NEVER FORGET...
No doubt GTA can't believe I'm not hearing this while stealing a police motorcycle and blasting the shit out of ballers.
Fuckin ballas
Still my jam in 2021
Gotta ...LOVE THIS...TY;)!
dude..thx for the time machine..years that have passed dissolved into a better memories..music that made and shaped my life..thx
Thank you, that was a pleasure.
Ah! I've been looking for this song, but I just finally had the thought of googling what I remember of the lyrics.
SAME HERE. I couldn't remember any lyrics however but only the rhythm and the beat. I had to go all the way to the source of where I first heard it. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
2004 Gta San Andreas good memories on the Dust.
One of my all time who favorites .....I've seem em bout 4 times live .....blew me away everytime
THE ICONIC LEGENDARY BAND OF THE LAST 100 YEARS..LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
YOU TUBE PROUDLY PRESENT S THE ONE AND ONLY.THE GREATEST ROCK BAND
ON THE PLANET..THE WHO..!!!!!!..
I thank 63YardDart for the explanation of the lyrics. And thank him.Great song. Sorta oxymoronic though if you think about it. The Who is a world-wide recognized band and they're singing about poseurs at parties, et al. As if they wouldn't attract the same.I've learned to like The Who at 63 after 35 years of ignoring them.
This also was my walkout song in baseball during the 2016 travel ball championship game , pitched perfect 4 strike outs , it pumped me up so much , everyone was waiting for hells bells to start playing after both teams had walked out (I was league mvp) and when I walked out to this everyone was so shocked lol
Thanks so much for the lyrics. For over 30 years I thought it was "Sometimes" not the "Sun Shines" lol.
annebeth66 "Sometimes" works too.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG! THANKS FOR THE LYRICS.
This song is brilliant!
Dude, nice video. The trivia and all. Very pleasant. :)
Law-Abiding Citizen!
Yes!! Right before he changes the song on the iPod to my favorite band, Deftones 'Engine no 9' and f*cks his cellmate up! Love it! Deftones!
@@Starboy-nz9mf So much for the spork.
@@Emulous79 - improvise..
Love this song of the Who.
one of the best bands to ever live period 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌
I’m pretty sure that it said “ living in the funk” at 2:38. You can slow down the video if you want too!!!!!! This is really such a masterpiece. Bad ass music that should be played in any bar. Even a wine bar. Lol. Preferably in a biker bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got here after SoundHounding this from 98.3 The Keg tonight. That first two minutes is the best part.
Love the intro in this song.....step back....let The Dart say what he wants.
A song I’d never think of since it was popular. Lyrics are Now and Today
Great piece.
TOP DEFINITION
Eminence front - The Who
About the facade one erects, or the pose one assumes, whether from pride, arrogance, insecurity or some other motive, in order to conceal his or her identity or essential self. The song lists various happenings, the pursuit or occurrence of which causes us to forget that we conceal ourselves as such.
Eminence fronters: Name-droppers, power trippers, title proclaimers, bling wearers, etc.
Great it's just what I was looking for! Last year or the year before it was on the blacklist! Just like the new version of silence by disturbed! I'd say that the song has a special meaning for putting on airs for 2020 cons!
I can relate to Allen, in a 1962 Austin Healey 3000, driveing some where in Phoenix, Arizona ********* Good and Bad Old Days.?????????Allways Lovedddddddddd this song. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting and keeping this video online. The song itself is priceless regarding individuality and structure for what was occurring in the early 1980s, but the value of the song as itself remains as a one-off exposure of the sentiment behind what was once a modest industry. The video spoke to me, and thus, can speak to others. Thank you for your hospitality.
Thank you for this. Great song.
"Sun shines, speed boat flies, people forget."
Awesome 🇦🇶
This my JAMM.......
Always thought he was saying Livin in this world. Then my brain developed a little more and i was able to ascertain that i was in fact a dumb ass and neglected musical history by not exposing my self to more of this wonderful music earlier.
Thank you 63YardDart for the lyrics and the meaning behind the song! Loved it!
Loving The Who from actual FM radio and being exposed to this song solely through SA is one of those things I cannot recall this song b4 2004
Thank you for making this video.
more than any song I can think of, I feel any person, teenager, senior, black, white, euro whatever, can get in the car for a saturday night, have this blaring, and feel it speaks to you.
Back in the day, on a sunny day, used to put the top down on my TR8, put this on my SUPERB stereo and head for the mountains, specifically the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and GET LOST! This musical matched the magnificent scenery so well..........good times.....so long ago
It's almost impossible to keep your eyes on the road when this song comes on in the car! LOL
Found this from Entourage (the Movie). Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor: Johnny "Drama" Chase, Hyde.
a childhood fave. til today, I searched endlessly "living in funk". so happy to find this song and know it's true meaning!!
FACEBOOK is the ultimate Eminence Front!
the soundtrack our lives... rock n roll yeah
Emiliano Ortega-Guerrero AWESOME
Ah, Yard Dart! I hear you! Your information is fantastic. My grandson is about to get this, and it will each him a lot. Deep song, deep message, your background: perfection. Thank you.
Oh this song is so true, I love it.
Thanks for the lirical video and the trivia, greatly appreciated it..! I have always liked this song but was finally prompted to look up the lirics since it's kinda hard to get it all. :D
+Christopher Collado Lyrics* Sorry, it bugged me.
Charlie Bennici It`s all good! :D
LOVE The Who.
Livin in funk !! Hahaha, now I know the truth, thank you 👍🏼
Oh, so that's what this cool funky song is about! I'm not surprised, since the Who always did some excellent deep tunes. I always thought he was singing, "People together," not "People forget." Anyway, I still like this tune---always have. It's currently being used for a car commercial---interesting choice.
+rainmaker690
And yeah, I first heard this song as a kid when it came out---still cool as hell, and a good classic R&B song by the Who.
Thanks 63! Loved the trivia and the lyrics. Many thanks. I just heard the song in a new movie and thought: hey that sounds like Pete Townsend...and the rest is history ☺
