Nice project! been very enjoyable seeing your build progress. I used to run a '93 Formula Renault and currently in the design stage of making a spaceframe classic mini so its nice seeing similar projects. Good luck with next seasons racing, I look forward to seeing track footage!
Awesome, that would be an interesting project. I had the first track session yesterday actually, I'll put together a video on that. Unfortunately the footage didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped, hopefully you'll enjoy it though.
Awesome to see this running.. Your livery? A dispersing swarm of ladybugs. Thick at the rear cowling, sparse at the front. It is powered by a beetle after all. ~smiles~ That should make the car stand out for your sponsors..
I quite like option A but just wait till you come over and we'll all design something amazing for you... Loved the comic touch at the beginning, car going backwards.
Very true. Kyle of JKF - an aerodynamics specialist who did the aero work for my car - has tried to optimize the undertray to move the downforce as much forward as possible but he's of the opinion that I'll need something at the front like you say. His suggestion is to make the H-Beam into a rudimentary wing to give the car balance and adjustment.
echtnietjaifi I thought those kinds of aerodynamic aids where illegal in FV I know rear wings are illegal here in the U.K. and I’ don’t see front wings here so I assume they’re not really aloud either
Thanks Simon. Take my hat off for you guys. I also have to undertake a similar exercise sometime to construct a rolling chassis for a 1975 Porsche 930 replica project. I'm considering to use a lexus engine.
I liked it where it was with the body style what I think could be cool is like a skirt on the bottom that represents the skirt cars that Nicky lawda drove
Yeah it's a combination of trying to reduce drag and lower the center of gravity. Visibility is actually quite good, better than I expected. The only issue I can see is that lining myself up with the marks on the starting grid may be difficult as they are so low beside the car. I'll have to wait and see how tough that is.
Nice work! Do you have a video in the works for A) the aero kit (I don't think you've covered this in any of your videos so far) or B) the making of the bodywork from the molds? I'm guessing (especially since you and +KYLE.DRIVES are good buddies) that you'll be using woven fiberglass rather than CF?
G'day. I'll definitely record and make a video on the aero once it's been made, it's still a way off though as I'm working seemingly forever on getting the bodywork ready. Which brings me to B, I'm not yet finished with the bodywork, it's getting there but it's not there yet. I'd like to wait to make the video until it's complete, painted and stickered. And yes, you're on the money with the fiberglass, I used a twill weave and epoxy resin system at Kyle's suggestion.
I driven the caterham cars and they usually have narrow band steering like one turn on each direction for left and right and the hands are always on the steering wheel at each bends. I reckon you'll need more down force for the front. but this car is sweet. whats engine is in it?
Thanks. When on a track I'd rarely turn more than 90 degrees left or right, this was a very tight park though so I had to do a lot of work with the wheel. With the tray you would be correct that it will probably need something on the front to provide balance, Kyle of Kyle.Drives has plenty of ideas about how to go about it. The engine is a 1600cc type 1 beetle engine.
Quick question on the transmission. I noticed you're using a VW AC flat-4. Are you using the accompanying VW transmission as well? And if so, how did you get it to have the gears in the right direction so to speak? Normally Beetle transmissions are in front of the engine and in your earlier episodes it looked like you were placing the transmission/transaxle and axles rearward of the engine. Thanks for any input! -American Mech-Engineering Student PS. Still awesome
Yes VW transmission. I didn't do the modification myself but I think they flip the gear on the differential so it reverses the direction from the gearbox.
Congratulations mate, great when every little bit of the puzzle comes together like that and the first testing phase goes off without a hitch. What's your ride height on the car, looks fairly low, do you plan to adjust it much? As far as graphics go I would say B looks pretty good, although it might be interesting to try something like "overlapping triangles" fading from the rear forwards, would look pretty jazzy. Well done again man!
Thanks. The ride height is just over 40mm which is the mandated minimum ride height for the car, I'd always aim to keep it as low as possible. I might mock up an overlapping triangles idea and see how it looks, I like the idea. I'd just need to figure out how I'd actually do it on the car, my current designs could be done quite simply with a large vynil sheet, cut using a stanley knife.
Naturally. Aye a quick google search of "overlapping triangle graphic" turned up some interesting looking stuff. Some printing companies do mail order vehicle wraps that you apply yourself, something like that might be worth looking into. Pity you're so far away, I have a mate here in Scotland that does exactly that.
I just searched that, I like what comes up. That sort of thing with a few shades of blue would look great. I'll do a search for what can be done in Australia, to date I've just been looking for the smaller sponsors stickers or large single colour sheets which I'd cut myself. I was in Scotland a couple of months ago by the way, I lived in north England for five months of this year for a work project. I loved Scotland, Edinburgh was fantastic and the mountain biking was some of the best I saw in the UK.
We did something similar to that for last year's FSAE car, it worked well but getting the placement and alignment correct on a surface that's curved in three directions is pretty tricky. Small world man, I study in Edinburgh, great city indeed! What was the work project if you don't mind me asking?
I mocked up an overlapping triangles style livery, have a look at some pictures: tinypic.com/r/2me50cl/9 and tinypic.com/r/2qkjvx1/9. I've sent the info to a vinyl wrapping place here in Sydney to get a quote to get the car wrapped. Honestly unless it's relatively cheap I'd probably have to forgo it to begin with, the other concepts I can do myself with some vinyl sheeting which will be a cheap way to go. The project I am working on is called Project LEILAC (www.project-leilac.eu/), which aims to capture carbon emissions from the production of lime and cement. Extremely interesting and exciting to be a part of something which would have such a positive impact.
G'day, the engine is a 1600cc Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle engine. In Australian Formula Vee you can choose between the 1200cc and 1600cc engine, the 1600cc class is much more competitive (and faster) so I went that way. One vote for idea C, good to know!
The amount the car turns per degree of wheel input is what's important - you could have a 180 degree steering angle that gives a lot or only a little turn at the wheels.
Hello brother I like your work, you are very good at what you do I would like to know if you would do a job to build a chassis for Lamborghini Aventador or if you can design it in chassis in the program, I hope your answer to start doing business
Thanks for the response. At the moment I'm just barely able to make full time work and this car work happen, I can't really take anything else on for the foreseeable future. I appreciate it though, sounds like it would be an amazing project.
If you are looking for any fan submissions I have an idea for one that I was thinking of doing on my Rabbit GTI that is very similar to what you have drawn up here. Pm me with your email and I can send it to you.
I'm open to anything but for now I'm just trying to do the best that I can with this car.

are you open to recive concept for future car updates or builds or even 3d models for futures versions of the car ? or new car stickers! im a 3d artist and a huge f1 and cars fan, so your channel mix bit o bought of my passions so i would love to help here and there when i can by sending ideas, i would love to see something desing by me or others in the community actually on a real track. ;) by the way which programs did you use for the creation of the 3d models of the car on the videos? did you or the friend who helped you with the car airflow use programs like flowdesing to test the airflow (i know flowdesing isnt the most exact program its just the one i know xd)
My vote is definitely design B! Looking and sounding good!
Nice project! been very enjoyable seeing your build progress. I used to run a '93 Formula Renault and currently in the design stage of making a spaceframe classic mini so its nice seeing similar projects. Good luck with next seasons racing, I look forward to seeing track footage!

Can't believe you don't have more views! Awesome video series :)
Awesome to see this running..
Your livery? A dispersing swarm of ladybugs. Thick at the rear cowling, sparse at the front.
It is powered by a beetle after all.
~smiles~
That should make the car stand out for your sponsors..
That cracked me up. Certainly would stand out.
Congratulations mate, after so much work you deserve a winning place...
either plain or idea C. They both look great. Keep up the great work
I quite like option A but just wait till you come over and we'll all design something amazing for you...

This build is pretty amazing.
you'll need more of a front wing, or you'll get understeer

engine sounds nice
Awesome! looks like a tight fit and super low but worth it I suppose for less wind resistance. how's the visibility?

The only issue I can see is that lining myself up with the marks on the starting grid may be difficult as they are so low beside the car. I'll have to wait and see how tough that is.
bravo!
Suspension need some more stiffness
Make a back and front wing, air scoop and an an engine cooler, then you can join the open wheel race
how did you build the chassis and how did you build the bodywork for it
Also, I'd go with B on the car paint scheme. Simple, easy to do, yet still pretty damn classy.
What are the hub/spindle and steering parts from?
A Volkswagen Type 1 road car.
good work mate, what engine did you choose? and for the design, idea c is better. It looks proffesional.
G'day, the engine is a 1600cc Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle engine. In Australian Formula Vee you can choose between the 1200cc and 1600cc engine, the 1600cc class is much more competitive (and faster) so I went that way. One vote for idea C, good to know!
well chosen engine.
why didn't you slope down the front of the car?
just wondering if there was a reason
The nose is higher than most because it would work better with the tray this way. Once it's on the car of course.
ohhh, okay are you going to put bigger skirts on the side of it? or is that not allowed by the rules?
Get a spoiler and a front Wing
so what kind of engine does this thing actually have ?
1600cc flat four cylinder Volkswagen Beetle Type 1 engine.
I wanna know how much it was
Roughly 30k AUD.
im the like number 1000!
for racing it would be better to have a 180 degree steering angle
The amount the car turns per degree of wheel input is what's important - you could have a 180 degree steering angle that gives a lot or only a little turn at the wheels.
Did you have suport on patreon?
Not much but everything is appreciated.
ThomsenMotorsport you must open a kickstarter not a patreon.

What kinda engine does it have?
A VW type 1 flat 4 1600cc engine.
What Engine is does he have in it
Volkswagen type 1 1600cc.
I like B
So u built an F1200
focus on traction. design just make it less bodywork.
Is this street legal?
No, though it does use a lot of the same underlying pieces as an old VW beetle.
Strange this video seems out of order in the list?
The list is in upload order, which is roughly chronological order.
Yeah I understand it would be hard, just the body work vid is after this one, would have liked to see that completed first. Awesome vidoes though!
B
for livery you should go to instagram.com/seanbullliveries/ maybe he wants to work with u guys?
Certainly some nice stuff up there.
If you are looking for any fan submissions I have an idea for one that I was thinking of doing on my Rabbit GTI that is very similar to what you have drawn up here. Pm me with your email and I can send it to you.
I can't seem to figure out how to PM, there's no message option on your channel. Could you upload it to something like tinypic and reply with a link?
ThomsenMotorsport Are you gonna enter Formula One if you get a lot of Championships and money?
I'm open to anything but for now I'm just trying to do the best that I can with this car.

dude im a young artist and i'm looking for a job, i can do a sketch for you. :)
I'm always interested in what others come up with, shoot it through if you do.
ok i would like to do something interesting!
ill try to do it within 1 week im @lollycat on twitter ill post it when i'm done
Cool I'll look out for it. My number is 19 by the way.
ok, i look in the vid, and i think i'm almost done
