I am driving an old (1995) ISUZU KB 2.8L Turbo disel with no modifications. The car has some 700000 km in the odometer and still going strong. My only complain about it its very fragile suspension when I go off-road which translates to approximately 500 to 600 euros per year in suspension for weare and tear. Do you guys have similar problems with newer ISUZU Dmax. If not for these suspension problems I was not going to hesitate for a moment getting this new ISUZU with all this luxury.
I would've liked an immediate test done with the tyre pressures being lowered to your recommended pressures to see the difference in the traction and ability to climb those same tracks.
As they say, it depends. Deciding factor for me was how little the DMax hunted gears during acceleration.. When the dealer let me test drive the ranger with my jetski, I was shocked how often the Ranger changed gears in the 6-9 range. When I hooked up to DMax, it was either 4-5 gears. I’ve driven both and the ranger is amazing, but was totally impressed how relaxed the Isuzu 3.0l was. I know I lost my deposit with Ford, but can’t wait to get my Isuzu in 3 months.
It's generally a given that the vehicle is going to change gears during acceleration. If you're feathering the throttle on the Ranger it is going to change gears more. But overall, the 10-spd provides a much better delivery of power as it has more ratios to keep it on peak torque and gives much better fuel economy. Also the engine is more powerful and the Ranger has a nicer interior. The Ranger is a proven vehicle as its been in production from 2011 on the same platform and is the second best selling car in Australia.

Interesting that the Isuzu traction control system never looked like it activated, as there was constant free spin on the lifted wheels, there is a rugged terrain button inside the Isuzu. It would be interesting to see if this was activated in order to turn on the traction control system. Also a Important note is that the ranger traction control system never completely turns off. Unlike the Isuzu That is 100 % off. In sand dune driving this is a big plus otherwise the traction control system applies brakes & limits the throttle to control wheel spin. I would rather have a TC system that can be completely turned off. Interesting that other reviews put the Isuzu ahead of the ranger in off-road performance, very subjective I guess
Now let’s be honest...if you buying a car to solely take it off-road you going to use your brains and go straight to Toyota. But yet again, that D-Max is such a huge improvement, overall a very attractive package that walking past it will be difficult. I’m still sold on the D-Max. I still want one as soon as it comes to Africa
Obviously the new D-Max is going to be better than the old one, otherwise what would be the point of making a new one? Comparing it to the best ute or bakkie, The Ford Ranger and you see that it still has lots of catching up to do
Cameron Maher it really doesn’t. It’s got an A game that will bring it up the sales chart. The only thing you criticize it for it traction control which can be tweaked by the next facelift together with more power and torque.
Great comparison and the track had some really technical bits. I was hoping the D-Max would outperform the Ranger, but surprise surprise an old design beats a new design. Looks like Isuzu could do with hiring some Aussie engineers if they want to claim off road bragging rights!
what you fellas fail to mention is that typically, you need to air down your tyres in these conditions. This will improve grip as lower psi increases the footprint of the tyre on the terrain. Obviously stock tires aren't as great as A/T or M/T however still an improvement. I personally believe you wouldn't have needed to apply that rear diff in this test if done so.
As a mechanic and keen off roader, I just can’t believe Isuzu chose to turn the front traction control off when you lock the rear diff!?!?. The 10 YEAR OLD Ranger doesn’t and neither does the Hilux. Don’t get me wrong, I love what Isuzu have built so much I’ve just bought one, but as a serious off road traveler I now have to look at aftermarket options to fix this issue. It would be so easy for Isuzu to simply update the software and fix this and I’m hoping they do.
I have a Subaru XT Premium with excellent safety features and have a Toyota Hilux at work. I must say prior I had a Prado done 300K klm diesel 2001 it was bullet proof and great off road. So admittedly I have a bias to Toyota. I swapped the Hilux with my mate to drive his Ranger as looking for a ute and wanted I crossed all bases. I also was fortunate enough to have a couple of drives of a D-Max with a set of good all terrain through Dingo Dell and out the back to camp over at Arocrombie “beach” (river super steep decline and difficult to get out) the D-Max was bloody awesome and the most comfortable out of the lot. The thing that wins it for me is D-Max is better appointed in the cabin with better safety options than rivals and also felt better to me. I am now going from a Toyota to a D-Max at the end of the month to me it now the king of the 4WD utes. Read other reviews other has also chosen the D-Max for better bang for buck and better comfort. My decision with two kids under 11 is safety whilst it has not had it’s ANCAP rating it certainly has better features to avoid being in a prang and more airbags than any other in the range.... I was personally impressed with D-max off road capabilities. So I will put my money where my mouth is.
Tad biased towards the Ranger as a relative of mine has a 2015 PXII XLS dual cab 4WD with the P5AT 5 cylinder turbo diesel and the 6 speed auto - it is amazing! He's upgraded it a tad from when he got it by fitting Sunraysia rims with standard size (LT265/60R17) Hankook Dynapro AT/M tyres..... the Dynapros are a marked improvement on the standard fit Bridgestone Dueler A/T 691's
The ranger is far nicer comfortable looks way better my 2014 Wildtrack came with a rear diff lock down hill descent 3.2 L diesel way better than the 2.0L I’ll buy another ranger tomorrow
I do agree the ranger did well in this hill climb .even with xtra traction control used but the D max has still potential against the Wildtrac 5 cylinders and 10sp auto .$$ rego @ 6cyl rate 6k more purchase costings Gaŕy gold coast .
$1500 dollars for a front locker and decent off-road tyres for both . have yourself a 2 good models of ute in Australia for that terrain only a small amount of folks to in these vehicles
The comparison is good and the various test where limited for an overall better comparison beach, towing just to name a couple would have given a better indication. With the limited testing my opinion is still slanted towards Hilux and Triton for overall performance, value for money ( including service warranty) and customer service which both fail at.
What were the tyre pressures? Regardless of what the tyre placard says they should be equal for parity and probably between 20 and 25 psi. And then see if they need diff lock. It’s not really a equal test if both placards have different pressures.
Good comparison on the tc systems looks like Ford has got that sorted. Only critique is the comparison of the drivetrain. We all can look up the numbers and how many gears a gearbox has but which has a better feel to the driver? You give the impression here the Ford has a better engine just because it's numbers are higher and a better gearbox because it has more ratios but that may or may not be the case. What do you the journalist subjectively feel?
Don't fool people. D max tcs system is in off position and cannot get out of the field. The ranger tcs system is freely on its way out. Warning lights appears on the display panels of vehicles.
Yep that always enjoys me. That last run the Ranger had to cross tut through the trees but the Dmax ran straight! Little bit of "journalism" going on there....
It's a shame the D-Max doesn't have traction control on the front when diff lock is engaged. That's a poor decision. Even a 2004 Touareg had excellent traction control, and with diff lock maintained traction control on the front, so it's hardly difficult to program a vehicle computer is that way. However with the money saved over the Ford a front locker can be fitted to the D-Max with change left over if rock crawling and steep slippery off-roading is your intended recreation. Plus with the D-Max you get much better towing and none of the annoying as hell Ford chimes when you get into the car.
Durability of almost all new cars is good but the common mob banter always exists, you don't see much about the Toyota dpf issue because the mob mentality they believe the advertising much like this famed Isuzu reliability hope you didn't believe the new motor crap its only a turbo and higher pressure fuel rail. Still each to their own.
Hey men, could you do a comparison as to how these two compare on dirt roads, and towing stuff? We run a pastoral Company and use Rangers as vehicles to go into town on 100km of dirt, tow stock trailers in all road conditions out west and even go to the airport in a capital city. Landcruiser utes on the property are terrible at long haul comfort, even when towing, so it would be great to know if the DMax/BT50 revision is better for this everyday rural (not city weekender 4WD'ing) use.
From the video proved that the Ford Ranger was not just a king in the Onroad field but also the king on the offroad field. So, don't be fooled at a cheap price, because it might be a cheap product. If possible I know, how is the tax system in Australia? Is it just as ridiculous like in Indonesia? And what is the status of the Ford vehicle there? Is CKD or CBU?

Don’t get me wrong, I love what Isuzu have built so much I’ve just bought one, but as a serious off road traveler I now have to look at aftermarket options to fix this issue. It would be so easy for Isuzu to simply update the software and fix this and I’m hoping they do.
Ranger all day
Until the next day when it shits itself!
Hopefully isuzu uplift their traction control game
So what you're saying is buy a good set of off road tires before you go off road?
Ranger anytime
So what was the difference in tyre pressures between the 2? "As recommended"??
Anthony Cooper yes I’m wondering the same as I’m sure the ranger had lower pressure to get up the hill
I do agree the ranger did well in this hill climb .even with xtra traction control used
but the D max has still potential against the Wildtrac 5 cylinders and 10sp auto .$$ rego @ 6cyl rate 6k more purchase costings Gaŕy gold coast .
Great review! Having this this cockpit camera view while climbing is brilliant! Will subscribe for this!
Ranger offroad Thanks . but new Dmax looks nice and much improved.
$1500 dollars for a front locker and decent off-road tyres for both . have yourself a 2 good models of ute in Australia for that terrain only a small amount of folks to in these vehicles
I enjoyed the review 🙏 I would take the Ranger 😂😂😂👌
Would be interesting if the traction control could be hacked to work on the front wheels of the Isuzu.
Great video. Great comparison. Also interesting what a diff locker can do
can't argue with results👍
Still Ranger takes its crown
The comparison is good and the various test where limited for an overall better comparison beach, towing just to name a couple would have given a better indication. With the limited testing my opinion is still slanted towards Hilux and Triton for overall performance, value for money ( including service warranty) and customer service which both fail at.
The dmax all the way, the Isuzu engine is bulletproof and cheaper, lift with some nice wheels it’s a beast can’t wait to own one 😎
I take ford ranger anytime
I will take the ford
What were the tyre pressures? Regardless of what the tyre placard says they should be equal for parity and probably between 20 and 25 psi. And then see if they need diff lock. It’s not really a equal test if both placards have different pressures.
Ranger for me
Both the best pickups
Would you be better of buying a 20k used car from 2014 spending 30k on I upgrades and then 10k in your own pocket?
Good comparison on the tc systems looks like Ford has got that sorted. Only critique is the comparison of the drivetrain. We all can look up the numbers and how many gears a gearbox has but which has a better feel to the driver? You give the impression here the Ford has a better engine just because it's numbers are higher and a better gearbox because it has more ratios but that may or may not be the case. What do you the journalist subjectively feel?
Don't fool people. D max tcs system is in off position and cannot get out of the field. The ranger tcs system is freely on its way out. Warning lights appears on the display panels of vehicles.
still wondering what the isuzu radio is like, do the doors vibrate like buggery like they did in the older model?
They were on different lines
Ranger top 1 for faulty transmission 👑
Ford Ranger 👍
FORD RANGER NUMBER 1 around the world
Thailand. N.3 service no good
Front right wheel n left back wheel is spanning. Which mode is it4h or4l?🙏
Great comparison lads!
Yes ford is better, but the price and in regards how long will it last? Sorry epic fail izuze is the turtle 🐢 the wins the race!
Bruh
Durability of almost all new cars is good but the common mob banter always exists, you don't see much about the Toyota dpf issue because the mob mentality they believe the advertising much like this famed Isuzu reliability hope you didn't believe the new motor crap its only a turbo and higher pressure fuel rail. Still each to their own.
I'm an American and I love Ford but it's like this. "Found On Road Dead"
Best selling 4x4 pickup! All new 2022 ranger 3.0 v6!
Wildtrack all day everyday
2004 dmax any good ? It's at 62 kz , was considering Toyota but nah
Great thorough comparison. Thank u ✌🏾😎✌🏾
Is CKD or CBU?
the 4x4 lse has no diff lock, why?
Hey caradvice how much did you get from ford not to mention the craked blocks at 80-90 k with this 2 l engines!?
isuzu the best reliable car
Yeah dmax is the best ...
Again no mention on the failing 10 speed autos?? Just trying to keep Ford honest here
I went with the 6 speed manual...its sweet
Ford Ranger!
I still doubt the 2.0 bi turbo will last long...
No se lo que dicen pero definitivamente que bella esta la dmax
Every manufacturer has been playing catchup since this Ranger launched in 2011 and they still are even the newest of the new Isuzu...Ford baby 💪
I'll go both.
What's a ute?
Great video, I would've loved seeing the new hilux in this video as well
Ranger is the winner
Lol talk to a diesel mechanic.
@@mattyoz0 You'll see more rangers only because there are more Rangers sold.
@@cameronm257 Hilux is the most sold ute in Australia.
@@mattyoz0 For July, the Ranger was the best selling Ute.
Isuzu la mejor pickup del mundo
Would like to know, when the New Isuzu will arrive here in Germany?! :)
Get the old D-MAX and compared to the new one see how it works out
Actually a decent climb well done
